Hi, everyone.
Welcome to another day on Let's Talk in English.
We are glad to have you here.
My name is Nathan.
And this week we are going to finish our topic about HOBBIES.
The title of our lesson today is Ways to Listen to Music.
And guess what?
Katie is here with us again.
Hi, Nathan. Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie.
I am excited to keep learning about music.
I hope you are, too.
Now it's time to get ready for today's lesson with our Let's Begin reading.
You can follow along in your magazine.
And you can listen to Nathan right now.
Let's Begin.
Mindy Music talks about ways to listen to music.
You can download songs from online music services.
Or you can listen to live radio shows online.
Smartphone music apps are also popular.
The music you choose depends on the time, your mood and your activity.
OK. Now let's take a look at Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk!
Today we are talking about music.
Please help me welcome our guest, Ms. Mindy Music.
Welcome, Mindy Music!
How do people get music these days?
Most people download MP3s from websites or online music services, Rob.
Do they pay for those MP3s?
Yes, many people do.
What about CDs?
They're not very popular now.
People are buying fewer CDs than before.
Is that because MP3s are more convenient?
Yes! They are easy to download and easy to store.
We see Rob in the studio with Mindy Music in Conversation A.
Rob asks Mindy how people get music these days.
And what does Mindy say, Katie?
She says most people download from websites or online music services.
And there are our key words.
Let's look at the first one.
download.
When you download something, it means you get it from the Internet.
So when you talk about downloading music, you download and buy it from the
Internet.
Then you put it on your computer or your iPod or MP3 player.
That's right.
Lots of people like to download music.
So you can say: I can download a great song tonight.
Or, where did you download that song from?
But did you know you can also download movies or books?
Yes, I did.
That's right.
And when people download music or movies, they usually use websites or online
music services.
And there's another key word.
online.
Online means on the Internet.
If you download or buy something online, it means you bought it on the Internet.
So I can say I went online and downloaded some new songs.
Or I could say I found some great music online.
In the conversation, Mindy Music also says that MP3s are easy to download and
easy to store.
OK, now let's move on to Conversation B.
People listen to the radio on the Internet, too.
Yes! Radio station websites play live shows.
People can listen on their smartphones, too!
Speaking of smartphones, people use apps to listen to music.
They do!
Songza is a free music app.
It suggests playlist for you.
Tell me more.
The playlists depend on the time of day, your mood and what you're doing.
That sounds great!
In Conversation B, Rob and Mindy continue to talk about how people listen to
music.
Rob says people listen to radio shows on the Internet.
And Mindy says radio station websites play live shows.
And there's a key word.
live.
If a show is live, this means you're watching the show at the same time it is
happening.
That's right.
Let's Talk in English is not a live show because we make the show before you
watch it or before you listen to it on the radio.
In the conversation, Mindy suggests a music app for Rob called Songza.
This app suggests playlists for listeners that depend on the time of day and
your mood.
And hey, there are two key words.
Let's look at the first one together.
depend.
If one thing depends on another thing, that means it needs it for something.
For example, babies depend on their parents for food.
Babies need their parents to feed them because they can't get food without help.
That's right, too.
So if the playlist depends on the time of day, this means that there is a
playlist that plays at each time of the day.
Another way to use this word is: Annie depends on her job for money.
All right, let's look at the next key word.
mood.
Your mood is how you feel.
If you're happy, you're in a happy mood.
If you're sad or mad, you are in a bad mood.
Let's try to use this in a sentence.
Matt was in a bad mood because he got a bad grade on his test.
He was unhappy because of his grade.
So that means he was in a bad mood.
That's right.
Or I could say I was in a good mood after work.
All right. Well, I'm very happy to say that it is time for us to go to the Read
It.
How do people get their music?
They are buying fewer and fewer CDs.
Most people download MP3s.
Getting music from websites or online services is very convenient.
Listening to the radio is convenient, too.
People can listen to live radio programs on their computers.
There are also many music apps for smartphones.
The Songza app suggests playlists.
The songs depend on the time of day, people's mood and their activity!
And we are back.
Our Read It starts with a question.
How do people get their music?
It continues by saying they are buying fewer and fewer CDs.
Let's look at the phrase "fewer and fewer." What is another way we could say
this, Katie?
Well, you could also say "less and less." It means not as much as before.
People are buying fewer and fewer CDs.
They used to buy more CDs.
CDs used to be very popular.
But they're not anymore.
That is definitely true.
Let's use this phrase in another way.
Matt is taking fewer and fewer business trips.
His company isn't doing very well.
Or, May is making fewer and fewer mistakes while playing the guitar.
You can see that she is practicing a lot.
Our Read It also tells us that getting music from websites or online services is
very convenient.
Listening to the radio is convenient, too.
If something is convenient, it is easy.
And practicing key words together is also convenient.
And we can do that right now.
download.
download.
I paid money to download this song.
online.
online.
Tina is taking online classes.
live.
live.
The live show is happening now.
depend.
depend.
The game depends on the weather.
mood.
mood.
I'm not in a good mood.
I'm angry.
Katie, are you really angry?
I mean, are you OK?
I was just kidding.
I am in a great mood.
Great job.
We hope you are all in a good mood as you're learning with us.
Learning English is very important.
So thanks for being here.
We'll be right back.
