Hi, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we are so glad you joined us again today.
Today we are still talking about PEOPLE.
And we have a new lesson for you called Look Your Best.
Look Your Best.
Now we have been talking about people's looks.
You can use words like someone is slim or someone is heavy to talk about their
looks.
And today we are going to learn some good tips to help you look your best.
Well Kevin, you look your best today.
Well, thank you.
Friends, do you want to learn how to look your best?
I know I do.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
Thank you for joining us today.
Now we want to help you get ready for today's lesson with our Let's Begin
reading.
You'll see all of today's key words in this reading.
You can find it in your Let's Talk in English magazine.
Or you can read along with Kevin right now.
Let's Begin.
Rob talks with a beauty magazine writer about looking one's best.
What are some easy ways to improve your looks?
Sit up straight.
You will look taller and thinner.
Get a good hairdresser to cut your hair.
Your style should look good with the shape of your face.
Drinking water also helps.
It keeps your skin looking nice and helps you stay slender, too!
OK. Well, we'll learn more about all of this in today's lesson.
So let's begin with Conversation A.
Hello, everyone. welcome to Let's Talk!
Do you know how to look your best?
Well, our guest today is here to help us with that.
Let's welcome Ms. Lana Looks.
Lana Looks, you write for a beauty magazine.
Tell us how people can look their best.
Sit up straight!
Good posture is very important.
Standing up straight makes people look taller and thinner.
Good posture is a good idea!
What else?
Smile!
A happy face is a nice-looking face.
Smiling improves your looks.
So brushing your teeth often is important, too!
Of course!
Lana Looks tells us how people can look their best.
Now what's the first thing she tells us?
Do you remember?
Well, Lana says, "Sit up straight." And we want to talk about that key word.
straight.
Now when you sit up straight, that means it looks like the top part of your body
is in a line going up.
When you sit up straight, you look better.
So you can sit up straight or you can stand up straight, right, Kevin?
That's right.
I am standing straight right now.
But uh oh, uh oh, uh, not anymore.
Kevin, Kevin, stand up straight!
Yes, ma'am.
OK. See? Kevin looks a lot better.
And it's true.
When you sit up straight or stand up straight, you have good posture.
Your body is in a good position.
And it does make you look taller and thinner.
Kevin is standing up straight right now.
And you do look taller and thinner, Kevin.
Well, I want to look taller and thinner because I want to improve my looks.
Hey, you just used a key word!
Let's look at our next key word.
It is "improve." Now when you improve your looks, your looks get better.
When you improve your English, your English gets better.
When you improve something, it gets better.
That's right.
I remember in middle school or junior high, I wanted to improve my typing speed.
So I practiced a lot.
And I'm sure you improved a lot, too.
So you can prove your looks by standing up straight or sitting up straight.
You can improve your looks by smiling.
So right now we want you to smile as we continue with Conversation B.
What else can people do to look good?
Get a haircut every six weeks.
And be sure to get a good style.
What's a good style?
Your style should look good with the shape of your face.
Ask a hairdresser for help!
OK. Do you have tips about skin?
Yes. If you want nice-looking skin, drink a lot of water!
Water keeps people healthy and slender, too!
Well, Lana Looks tells us we need to make sure the haircut we get looks good
with the shape of our face.
Let's talk about that key word.
shape.
Now the shape of something is the form of something.
It can be round.
It can be square.
When you take a pencil and draw along the outside of something, that is its
shape.
Let's use that in a sentence.
The shape of Gene's face is square.
He sometimes looks angry, but he is actually very happy.
You can say the shape of Kathie's ears is very round.
She must hear things very well.
So Ms. Looks tells us we need to find the right haircut for our face's shape.
She tells us a hairdresser can help us find that right haircut.
Let's look at that key word.
hairdresser.
A hairdresser is someone who shapes and styles hair for a job.
Let's use that in a sentence.
Abby wants to be a hairdresser when she grows up.
Or, the hairdresser did a great job with Max's hair.
Finally, Ms. Looks gives us some advice - drink a lot of water.
Why? Because it will help with your skin, and it will help you be slender.
That brings us to our last key word.
slender.
Now when something is slender, we mean it is thin.
"Slender" is another way to say thin.
Andrea, can you use "slender" in a sentence?
I can.
We can say: Ralph wants to be slender but not too thin.
He wants to look healthy.
We can also say the piano player has really slender fingers.
All right, friends, good job.
Let's move on to our Read It.
Improving your looks may be easier than you think.
Here are a few easy ways you can look better.
1) Sit and stand up straight.
You'll look taller and more slender.
2) Smile.
You will look nicer, and people will want to be around you.
3) Cut your hair often.
Your hairdresser can help you find a good style for the shape of your face.
4) Drink water.
Your skin will look better, and you'll feel better, too!
Oh, sorry, friends.
I just need to drink some water... because we learned that if you drink water,
it will improve your looks.
Your skin will be nicer.
I heard that it's good to drink eight cups of water a day.
So I will try to drink lots of water.
Now today we learned many tips to help improve your looks or to help you look
your best.
Kevin, which tip will you try to work on?
Well, I will work on sitting up straight more often.
Sometimes it's easier not to sit up straight.
But it just does not look as good.
And one tip we can all do right now is to smile.
When you smile, you improve your looks.
And people will want to be around you.
Now it is a good idea to learn about improving your looks and to talk about how
to look your best.
But looks aren't the most important thing, right, Kevin?
That's right.
Who you are is important, too.
How nice you are, how polite you are is very important.
Yes, we want you all to be happy and healthy.
And now we want to help you improve your English by practicing our key words
together.
straight.

Stand up straight when you walk.
You'll look better.
