Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And this is LTE TV.
Today we continue to talk about TRAVEL.
And today we are going to talk about how to be safe or how to stay safe when you
are traveling.
The title of our lesson is Stay Safe!
And we want you all to stay safe and learn a lot with us today, right, Kevin?
That's right, we do.
And we want you to learn how to speak in English and talk about staying safe.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
Thank you for joining us today.
Now we will begin with our Let's Begin reading.
You can find this in your Let's Talk in English magazine.
And we will read this together.
Let's Begin.
Rob talks to Tara Traveler about safe travel.
She tells people not to carry large amounts of cash.
People should keep their valuables in a hotel safe, too.
She also tells people to keep an eye on their personal items and not to be too
trusting.
Well, you can trust us.
So let's start learning with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
You know, many people like to travel.
But how can we stay safe when we travel?
Well, today we're going to learn some tips about that.
Please help me welcome our guest for today - Ms. Tara Traveler.
Welcome to the program, Tara Traveler.
Thank you, Rob.
Tell us about travel safety.
First, don't carry large amounts of cash.
Carry a little cash and use a credit or debit card.
What about your valuables?
Don't carry them around!
Put them in a safe in your hotel.
What about just leaving them in your hotel room?
You can. But that's not always safe.
Well, Tara Traveler talks about travel safety.
She tells us, "First, don't carry large amounts of cash." Let's look at this key
word together.
It is "amount." Now an amount of something is how much of something you have.
If you have a large amount of cash, that means you have a lot of cash, or you
have a lot of money.
Another example we can use is sometimes when you buy chips and you open the bag,
you realize there is a small amount of chips and a large amount of air.
That is true.
Well, Rob asks, "What about your valuables?" Well, what about that key word?
Let's talk about it together.
valuables.
Now your valuables have value to you.
We see the word "value" at the beginning of this word.
If something has value, it means a lot to you, it is important to you.
Some valuables are also a lot of money.
So you want to make sure they stay safe.
So what are some examples of valuables?
Well, your ID is very valuable.
So is an expensive ring.
And when you are traveling, your passport is valuable.
So you want to make sure you keep all these things safe.
Tara Traveler says, "Don't carry them around. Put them in a safe in your hotel."
Let's talk about our next key word.
And that is: safe.
Now here "safe" is a noun.
It is a thing.
A safe often looks like a box.
It has a door that you can open.
And you can put things inside.
You can put your valuables inside.
And they will stay safe.
I had a friend that has a safe.
He puts a lot of things in it, like his valuables - his ID, some things that he
cannot lose.
Now you can find a safe in your hotel room.
You might have a safe in your home, in your house or your apartment.
Where else can you find a safe?
Oh, I know! Banks usually have big safes.
They keep a large amount of money in those safes.
And we still have a good amount of things to learn.
So let's continue with Conversation B.
And when you're out seeing the sights?
Watch what's going on around you.
And keep an eye on your personal items.
Should you look at a map when you're walking around?
No. It's better to look at a map before leaving your hotel.
You meet friendly people when you travel.
You do. But don't be too trusting.
Don't share too much personal information with them.
Let's start off by talking about our key words.
Our first set of key words is "keep an eye on" something or someone.
Now when we say "keep an eye on something," it means we want you to watch it
carefully, to make sure that it is safe and it is close to you.
When traveling, you should keep an eye on your things.
You want to make sure your things stay safe.
Peter had to leave the room, so he asked his friend to keep an eye on his bag.
Now Ms. Traveler tells us to keep an eye on our personal items.
Let's talk about that key word.
personal.
Now "personal" means it belongs to one person and no one else.
That's right.
Let's use this in a sentense.
You should not be looking through someone's personal things.
Or Sarah packed her personal items in a small bag.
We also see this key word used with "information." Personal information is
information about yourself.
And you may not want to share it with everyone.
Right. We can say: Martha's age is her personal information.
She doesn't want to tell anyone.
Tara Traveler says you shouldn't share too much personal information with people
when you travel.
Now at the beginning of our conversation, we see the phrase "seeing the sights."
Seeing the sights.
What does that mean?
Well, when you see the sights, you see the important places in a city or an area
when you are traveling.
So seeing the sights is something you often do when you are traveling.
All right, friends, let's move on to our Read It.
Traveling can be a lot of fun, but you need to be careful.
Keep yourself and your personal items safe.
How? Don't carry large amounts of cash.
Keep a little cash with you and use a credit or debit card.
Leave your valuables in your hotel, but put them in a safe.
When you're walking around, watch what's happening around you.
Keep an eye on your personal items at all times, too.
Don't be too trusting.
Well, we learned a lot about travel safety today.
And we reviewed most of what we learned in our Read It.
Now let's look at a few of these sentences.
Keep yourself and your personal items safe.
Keep yourself and your personal items safe.
This is something that you need to continue to do while you travel.
You need to keep doing it.
How do you do that?
Well, keep large amounts of cash in a safe.
Don't keep them with you.
We also use this sentence:
Keep a little cash with you and use a credit or debit card.
That means always have just a little bit of cash, or it's better to use a credit
or debit card.
Right. Now remember, you shouldn't keep your valuables with you.
You should leave them in your hotel.
And if you leave them in your hotel, where should you keep them, Kevin?
Oh, you should keep them in a safe.
That's right. They will stay safe in a safe.
We learned the key word "safe" as a noun.
But it can also be an adjective.
When something stays safe, it is OK and is in a good place.
Well, we want to take a good amount of time to review our key words.
So let's do that now.
amount.
amount.
This work will take me a large amount of time.
valuables.
valuables.
Keep your valuables in a safe place.
safe.
safe.
The bank keeps most of its money in a safe.
keep an eye on something or someone.
keep an eye on something or someone.
Monica kept an eye on her children while they played in the park.
personal.
personal.
Don't ask someone's age.
That's a personal question.
All right, friends, good job.
We will be rightback.
