All right, we will begin our lesson with a Let's Begin reading.
This Let's Begin reading will help you with your English, and will talk about
what we are learning today.
So please follow along.
Rob and his family will have a great time in Los Angeles.
They can go to Hollywood.
They can see movie stars in a wax museum there.
They can see the famous sidewalk with stars on it, too.
An actor or famous person's name is on each star.
All right, let's go straight to Conversation A.
Hi, Rob!
Are you ready for your trip next month?
Yes. I have plane tickets to Los Angeles.
Los Angeles?
Aren't you going to Taiwan?
No. My family changed their plans.
I see.
Well, Los Angeles is a great place.
You can see a lot of famous sights there.
I know. We can go to all kinds of places.
Yes, you can!
Well, Rob has plane tickets to Los Angeles.
Kevin, have you ever been to Los Angeles?
I have.
Los Angeles is a big, big city.
There is a lot to do there.
Yes. Well, Carol says that Los Angeles is a great place.
She says you can see a lot of famous sights.
And we can see a key word in that sentence.
Let's talk about it together.
It is "famous." Now if something is famous, that means many people know about
it.
Famous sights in cities are places that many people know about, and many people
go and visit.
So a place or a sight can be famous.
Now can people also be famous, Kevin?
Oh, yes, people can also be famous.
We think of movie stars or sports stars.
Those are some famous people.
Yeah. We'll be talking more about movie stars in our next conversation.

Have you ever met a famous person?
Well, sometimes people do see famous people as they travel, especially when you
visit a city like Los Angeles.
Well, at the beginning of our conversation, Carol says,
"Are you ready for your trip next month?" She wants to know if Rob is prepared,

I'm sure many of you have.
Hollywood is a place where you can see movie stars.
Hey, let's look at that key word.
star.
A star is someone famous for being in a movie, television, sports or music.
For example, Joy wants to be a movie star one day.
That means she wants to be in movies and be famous.
We can say: Warren waited 5 hours to take a picture with a sports star.
Hmm, 5 hours. Wow!
So we've talked about movie stars.
What are some other famous stars?
Well, we talked about sports stars, TV stars.
There are pop stars.
There are rock stars.
There are many kinds of stars.
Yes, pop stars and rock stars.
Now a pop star is a famous singer who sings pop music.
So what is a rock star, Kevin?
Well, a rock star is someone famous for singing rock music or playing rock
music.
Well, Hollywood is famous because many American movies and TV shows are filmed
there.
That's why you might be able to see a movie star if you visit Hollywood.
But you also might not be able to see stars.
So Carol says you can see movie stars in the wax museum.
And that brings us to our next key word.
museum.
A museum is a place where you can see many interesting things and learn a lot.
There are many kinds of museums.
There are art museums, science museums.
There are car museums.
There are many different kinds of museums.
That's right.
Do you enjoy going to museums?
Some people do.
Some people don't.
Well, let's use this key word.
Harry took Lillian to a museum on a date.
That's nice.
Well, friends, why don't we move on to Conversation C and learn some more.
Can you take pictures with the stars in the museum?
Yes. You can touch them, too.
And there is also a famous sidewalk in Hollywood.
It has stars on it.
Right!
The stars have movie stars' names on them.
We can find the names of our favorite actors.
We can take a lot of pictures.
You can.
Take a lot of money, too.
Hollywood is expensive!
So you can take pictures with the stars at a wax museum.
Now how can you take pictures with a star in a wax museum, Kevin?
Well, these stars aren't real.
They're made out of wax.
Ah, that's right.
But they look real.
So if you take a picture with them, people might not know.
So you can take pictures with stars at a wax museum.
Or you can touch famous stars that are on a famous sidewalk.
Now here we see the key word "star" again.
But this time it has a different meaning.
We're not talking about movie stars and sports stars.
We're talking about a different kind of star.
Our key word is: star.
And here "star" is a shape.
We're talking about what something looks like.
And this sidewalk has stars on it.
So you see the shape of a star.
Many times teachers, when they are grading papers, like to put stars when you do
really, really well.
And the stars on this special sidewalk have movie stars' names on them.
And you can go and look for the names of your favorite actors.
Our next key word is: actor.
Now an actor is a person who acts.
So where do we see actors?
Well, you can see them in movies and on TV.
Or you can see an actor in a play.
That's right.
You can see actors on a stage.
You can see actors in commercials, too.
Do you have a favorite actor?
Some people have favorite actors.
They want to see all the shows or all the movies that that actor is in.
Now we use the word "actor" to talk about men or boys who are acting.
What word do we use for a woman or a girl who acts?
Well, we say "actress," A-C-T-R-E-S-S.
Right. But you can also use the word "actor" when talking about a woman.
You can say a female actor or an actress.
Now let's get ready to review today's key words.
