Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And this is LTE TV.
Today we are going to talk about Food.
Now everybody likes to talk about food, right?
I do. And I hope you do, too.
The title of today's lesson is All About Restaurants.
And we are going to talk about eating out.
Now when you eat out, that means you go to a restaurant.
You don't eat at home.
Well, Kevin, I'm glad you're here again today.
I'm glad I am here, too.
I like to talk about food.
But I like to eat food more.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
Thank you for joining us today.
Now we want to help you get ready for today's lesson by looking at our Let's
Begin reading.
You'll find out what will happen in today's conversations, and you will see all
of our key words in this reading.
Let's Begin.
Rob and Joe are eating lunch in the Jungle Cafe.
Joe had a hot dog and fries.
Rob wants a light lunch.
He has a salad.
Joe's parents are visiting this week.
Rob tells Joe about Taylor's Steak House.
They have the best steak in the city.
Their chicken is really good, too.
Joe can take his parents there!
And now we can take a look at Conversation A.
Did you eat lunch, Joe?
I just finished.
I had a hot dog and fries.
Yum! I want a light lunch today.
Why? Aren't you hungry?
Not really.
Maybe I can have a salad.
Good idea.
Hey, Rob, my parents are visiting me this week.
Do you know any good restaurants?
Yes! Take them to Taylor's Steak House.
Well, Joe just finished lunch.
And what did he eat for lunch today?
Well, he told us that he had a hot dog and fries.
A hot dog and fries.
Well, those are key words.
Let's a look at the first one together.
It is "hot dog." Now a hot dog is something that you eat.
A hot dog is a long piece of meat that you eat between bread.
Kevin, do you like hot dogs?
I like to eat hot dogs sometimes.
They are quite delicious.
But I can't eat them all the time.
I understand.
Hot dogs are good, but they are not very healthy.
So you don't want to eat hot dogs all the time.
But we do want to look at our next key word.
And that is "fries" or "French fries." Now you might eat French fries with a hot
dog.
French fries are small pieces of potatoes that are cooked in oil.
That's right.
Sometimes you get fries with hamburgers.
Many Americans like to eat French fries with their hamburgers.
Right. So you can say "fries" or you can say "French fries." Do you like fries?
Do you often eat French fries?
Well, French fries are good.
But they are not very healthy.
Something that is healthy is a salad.
And that's another key word.
salad.
Now there are many different kinds of salads.
We often think of salad as having many different kinds of vegetables that are
cut into small pieces.
You can eat a salad with a special sauce.
That's right.
Sometimes if you want your salad to taste different, you can add some fruit or
you can add some nuts.
Yeah, I like salads with fruit and nuts.
You can also have a fruit salad.
And that is only a salad that is made with fruit.
So there are different kinds of salads: vegetable salads, fruit salads.
There's also pasta salad.
And that's made with pasta.
Well, we see something else that we want to talk about in this conversation.
Rob says that he wants a light lunch today.
A light lunch.
Now when you say you want a light lunch, that means you're not very hungry, or
you don't want to eat a lot.
Sometimes when you say "light lunch," you do not want something with a lot of
fat.
So you eat it, and it does not feel heavy in your belly.
Now we can use this word "light" when we talk about lunch.
But you can also say: I want a light breakfast.
I want a light dinner.
Or I want a light snack.
Well, I'm sure that you want to learn more in Conversation B.
I love steak!
I do, too.
A big, delicious steak is one of my favorite foods!
My parents like steak, too.
So Taylor's Steak House has good steak?
Yes. Taylor's has the best steak in the city.
Good. I can take my parents there!
Do I need a reservation?
Yes. The restaurant is usually crowded.
Well, I love steak, too.
My friends and I love to eat steak together on special days.
Now Rob says Taylor's Steak House has the best steak in the city.
The best steak?
I should try it sometime.
Let's talk about our first key word.
best.
Now when something is the best, it means nothing is better or nothing is as
good.
So we have good, better and the best.
Isn't that right, Andrea?
That is right.
Well, let's try to use this key word in a sentence.
Tom is the best football player.
He is better than all the other players on his team.
I can also say I bought this cellphone because Ivan said it was the best.
Now steak costs a lot of money.
It is not cheap.
So Taylor's Steak House must be a nice restaurant.
Now nice restaurants often need people to make a reservation.
Andrea, what is a reservation?
Well, a reservation is a seat or a table that is saved for you at a restaurant.
So if a restaurant is very busy, you might need a reservation.
You can call the restaurant first to make a reservation.
That way, you know there will be a seat or a table for you when you get there.
All right, friends, good job practicing those words with us.
Maybe next time you can make a reservation in English.
All right. Let's move on to Conversation C.
Does Taylor's Steak House only have steak?
Or do they have other meat?
They have great chicken, too!
And the bread and vegetables there are also delicious.
Is Taylor's menu online?
Yes. You can check it later.
OK. Do they have baked potatoes?
Of course!
Is the restaurant expensive?
Well, yes. But it's really good!
Well, Joe has many questions about Taylor's Steak House.
I always like to know a lot about a restaurant before I go there as well.
Well, Joe has a good question to start our conversation.
He says, "Does Taylor's Steak House only have steak? Or do they have other
meat?" So Kevin, do they only have steak?
Or do they have other meat?
Well, they have other meat.
I believe their chicken is very good, too.
That's right.
Rob says, "They have great chicken, too." Well, that's a great key word to talk
about.
chicken.
Now chicken is a kind of meat.
Chicken comes from a chicken, right?
Well, there you go.
So when we are talking about meat that comes from different animals,
sometimes we have a different name for the meat than the name we have for the
animal.
Well, with chicken, it's easy.
Chicken comes from a chicken.
Now let's review some of the other kinds of meat that we've talked about.
We often eat meat that comes from a cow.
What do we call that meat?
Hmm, we call that "beef".
So beef comes from a cow.
What do we call the meat that comes from a pig?
Pork.
So pork comes from a pig.
And chicken comes from a chicken.
What kind of meat do you like to eat?
Do you like beef, chicken or pork?
Or maybe you like all three.
Well, we see some good questions to learn more about a restaurant in this
conversation.
So take a look at those.
For now, let's review our key words together.
hot dog.
hot dog.
I ate a hot dog at the game.
fries.
Or French fries.
fries.
French fries.
Do you want French fries with your sandwich?
salad.
salad.
There are many vegetables in my salad.
best.
best.
Rick's test score is 100.
That's the best grade in the class.
chicken.
chicken.
Do you want beef, chicken or pork?
All right.
Good job, friends.
We will be right back.
