Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we are glad that you joined us for a new week of learning together.
We are talking about SPORTS.
And the title of today's lesson is I Like Basketball.
I Like Basketball.
Do you like basketball?
Well, today we are going to learn how to talk about this sport in English.
Hey, Kevin, do you like basketball?
I do like basketball.
And I hope you like basketball, too.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
Thank you for joining us today.
And we want to help you get ready for today's lesson with our Let's Begin
reading.
Now you can find this in your Let's Talk in English magazine.
And you can read along with Kevin right now.
Ready? Let's begin.
Ken likes basketball.
Megan can play with him.
Ken throws the ball to her.
She catches it.
But Megan doesn't like basketball.
She can't shoot baskets.
Maybe she needs more practice.
They shoot baskets together.
Megan stands and shoots.
She shoots well.
Ken doesn't.
He isn't happy.
He likes real basketball better.
Well, let's start learning with Conversation A.
Hi, Megan! Catch!
Why did you throw me a basketball, Ken?
I will play basketball in the park after work today.
Come play with me.
No thanks. I don't like basketball.
Why not?
I can't play basketball very well.
You just need more practice.
I do. But I don't like sports very much.
Hey, Kevin! Catch!
Hey, I caught the ball.
Andrea, why did you throw me a basketball?
Well, I threw you a basketball because I wanted you to catch it.
OK.
And you did that.
That's right.
Yes. And "catch" and "throw" are our two key words in this conversation.
So let's catch, or let's talk about that first key word.
It is "catch." Now when you catch a ball, the ball is in the air, and then you
catch it in your hands.
You catch the ball.
That's right.
So you can catch many things.
Sometimes my keys are near my friend.
And so my friend can throw me his... my keys.
And then I catch the keys.
Right, you catch the keys.
Now the past tense of this verb is one of those ones that you just have to
remember.
The past tense of "catch" is "caught," C-A-U-G-H-T.
I just caught the ball.
Now I'm going to throw the ball to Kevin again.
Can you catch it again, Kevin?
Of course I can.
OK. I threw the ball to Kevin.
And I caught the ball.
Well, let's talk about that key word.
throw.
Now when you throw the ball to someone, it's in your hands.
Then you send it in the air to the other person.
And you want that person to catch it.
So let me throw the ball to Andrea.
Kevin just threw the ball to me.
"Throw" has another past tense that you just have to remember.
The past tense of "throw" is "threw," T-H-R-E-W.
Catch, caught.
Throw, threw.
We know that you can remember that.
Well, why does Ken throw the ball to Megan?
He wants to play basketball with her.
So he says, "Come play with me." Come play with me.
When you want someone to join you by playing a sport, you can say: Come play
with me.
That's right.
Hey, Andrea.
I'm going to play some tennis later.
Come play with me.
Uh... No, Kevin, I don't think I can play with you.
I can't play tennis very well.
In our conversation, Megan says, "I can't play basketball very well." If you
don't think you can play a sport very well, you can use this phrase.
But we can keep learning with Conversation B.
Sports are fun.
Sports are fun for some people.
And basketball is really fun.
I like it a lot.
Books are fun, too.
I like them more.
Ha ha. Let's shoot some baskets right now.
Here?
Sure! We can shoot the ball into that trash can over there.
But I can't shoot baskets.
Sure you can! Just try.
Let's learn some other words in Conversation B.
Ken asks Megan to shoot some baskets with him.
Let's look at our first key word.
That is "basket".
Now a basket is... well, in basketball, when you throw a ball into something to
score points, that is a basket.
For example, Ralph shot the ball into the basket.
We can also say: Sandy yells a lot when her team gets a basket.
Now in basketball, we "shoot" a ball into a basket.
We do not "throw" a ball into the basket.
But we can throw a ball to another person.
Well, Ken wants to shoot some baskets right now.
But they don't have a basket.
So Ken says, "We can shoot the ball into that trash can over there." Now what is
a trash can?
Well, a trash can is a place where you can throw your trash or garbage.
So it's a big thing where you throw away things you don't want.
Right. And if you want to practice shooting a basketball and you don't have a
basket, well then I guess you can use a trash can.
And it can be like your basket.
That's right, many times when I need to throw something away, I pretend I'm
playing basketball and I throw it into the trash can.
All right, friends, good job learning English with us.
Let's move on to Conversation C.
That was fun. I won!
Yes, you did.
You got 15 baskets.
I only got 13.
I can play this kind of basketball.
I just stand and shoot!
This isn't really basketball.
You run and jump in real basketball.
I know. I don't like that.
Come on, let's shoot more baskets.
You need more practice!
Well, Megan wants to shoot some more baskets.
She likes this kind of basketball.
So who won the game, Kevin?
Well, Megan won the game.
She scored 15 baskets.
And Ken only scored 13.
Yes.
And Ken doesn't seem very happy about that.
Well, Megan says, "I can play this kind of basketball. I just stand and shoot."
Well, I'm just going to stand and teach this key word.
Our key word is "stand." Well, Kevin and I are standing right now.
When you stand, you do not sit.
When you stand, your legs are straight and your body is straight.
Sometimes when you want to see something that's hard to see and you're sitting
down, you can stand and see the thing better.
Right. So are you standing right now?
Or are you sitting and enjoying our show?
Now when you play a sport like basketball, you can't sit.
You have to stand.
Well, Ken says that this isn't really basketball.
You run and jump in real basketball.
Now that's a real key word that we want to talk about.
real.
Now if something is real, it is true.
Now Ken and Megan are not playing real basketball because they are shooting the
ball into a trash can, and they are not running and jumping.
Real basketball is played by basketball players.
And of course, you need a basket.
That's right.
So let me use "real" in a sentence.
Jessy is wearing a necklace that is made of real gold.
Right. Wow, that is nice!
We can say the fruit on the table is not real.
It is just there to look nice.
So think about what is real and what is not real.
Well, at the end of our conversation, Megan says, "You need more practice." Ken
needs to practice more.
And you need more practice with our key words right now.
So please say them with us.
catch.
catch.
Can you catch the ball?
throw.
throw.
Throw the ball to me now.
basket.
basket.
Let's shoot baskets.
Where is the basketball?
stand.
stand.
Let's stand.
We can't sit.
real.
real.
Don't eat that candy.
It isn't real.
All right. Good job, friends.
We will be right back.
