Hi, everyone.
Now what time is it?
It is time for Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we are glad that you joined us again today.
Today we are talking about LIFE.
Time is part of life.
And the title of today's lesson is a question.
What Time Is It?
What Time Is It?
It is time to learn.
And we are going to have a great time together today.
That's right, we are.
Are you ready to learn some English?
I am.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
Let's begin with our Let's Begin reading.
You can find this in your Let's Talk in English magazine.
And it will help you with the lesson today.
Let's Begin.
Ken isn't wearing a watch.
And he can't find his cellphone.
He asks Susie for the time.
Is it around 11 o'clock?
She doesn't know.
Ken has a meeting at 11:45.
He can't be late.
He looks at the clock in Rob's office.
Oh, no!
It's five minutes after 12:00.
Ken is late!
Well, let's not be late listening and watching our conversations.
Let's start with Conversation A.
Hey, Susie. What time is it?
I don't know.
I'm not wearing a watch.
Where's your cellphone?
Look at that.
My cellphone is in my desk.
Why can't you look at your cellphone?
I can't find it.
Where could it be?
Well, my phone might be at Stella's Restaurant.
I was there last night.
Ken starts by asking Susie a question.
It's the title of our lesson today.
He says, "What time is it?" Ken doesn't know the time.
And Susie also doesn't know the time.
Why doesn't she know the time?
Well, Susie is not wearing a watch.
Let's talk about this key word.
watch.
Now a watch is something that you wear at the bottom part of your arm.
And why do you wear a watch?
Well, you wear a watch so that you know what time it is.
That's right.
So for example, you can buy a watch as a gift to a friend.
It will be helpful for them to know what time it is.
Now I always wear my watch.
I wear my watch every day.
Kevin, you are not wearing a watch, are you?
No, I am not.
I don't like having things on the bottom of my arm or on my arm.
OK. That's OK.
So do you wear a watch?
Why or why not?
Well, Susie is not wearing a watch.
Ken does not have a watch.
He also can't find his cellphone.
He says, "I can't find it." Now if you are looking for something and you don't
know where it is, you can say, "I can't find it.".
Susie says, "Where could it be?" I can't find it.
Where could it be?
You can use these phrases when you are looking for something.
Now let's continue with Conversation B.
Call the restaurant and ask.
I can't. The restaurant isn't open.
It opens at 5 o'clock.
Oh. Well, there is a clock in Rob's office.
OK, I can check that.
Why do you need the time?
I have a lunch meeting with Carol at 11:45.
I can't be late.
I know. Carol is always on time.
Carol is always on time.
It's good to be on time.
Andrea, what does it mean to be on time?
Well, when you are on time, you are at a place when you are supposed to be
there.
You are there at the right time.
And I agree. It's good to be on time.
Well friends, we are going to talk some more about time.
So we will start with our first key word.
o'clock.
Now "o'clock" is something we say to say the time on the hour.
So when it is 5:00, we say "five o'clock".
Not 5:05 or 5:15.
At 5:00, it's five o'clock.
Right. And if the time is 5 o'clock, you can say it's five or it is five
o'clock.
Both are correct.
But since our key word is "o'clock".
Let's practice saying a few times.
It's four o'clock.
I need to go home.
It's ten o'clock.
I need to go to bed.
Now Ken needs to know the time.
So Susie tells him that Rob has a clock in his office.
And here we have our second key word.
clock.
Now a clock is something we use to tell time.
It can be big.
It can be small.
Many times we put it on a wall.
Sometimes we put it on our desks.
For example, Ben bought Christine an old clock.
You can also say the clock says three o'clock, but the clock should say two
o'clock.
So you can find out the time by wearing a watch.
Or you can find out the time by looking at a clock.
So we've learned a lot, haven't we?
Let's move on to Conversation C.
What time is it now?
Is it after 11:00?
It's around 11:15, I think.
Go look at Rob's clock.
OK. Maybe I can see it from here.
Can you see the clock?
Yes, I can.
Uh-oh. It's five minutes after 12:00.
I'm late!
Hurry! Run to your meeting!
I'm going! Bye!
Oh, no! Ken is late.
He needs to hurry.
He's running to his meeting.
Well, we need to look at our key words from this conversation.
We have two.
Let's look at the first one together.
It is "around".
Now when we are talking about time, and you say it's around 9:00, that means it
can be a little bit before 9:00 or a little bit after 9:00.
It's around 9:00.
So when did you come to work?
Or when did you go to school?
Hmm, around 9:00.
Hopefully a little earlier.
And if you want to meet someone at a place, you can say: Well, let's meet around
7:00.
So if you are there at 7:05, you're not really late because you said you would
meet around 7:00.
Well, Ken is late.
He says he's late.
Now when you are late, that means you are not on time.
I don't like to be late to things.
Do you like to be late, Kevin?
No. Being late is not good because then people are not happy.
Well, Ken is late.
His meeting was at 11:45.
But it's already five minutes after 12:00.
Let's look at our key word here.
It is "minute".
Now we use the word "minute" when talking about time.
There are sixty minutes in an hour.
So there's a phrase we like to use.
When you want a little more time, some people like to say, "Give me five
minutes." Just give me five minutes.
And of course when you're sharing what time it is, you can say it's ten minutes
after 8:00 or it's five minutes after 9:00.
Well, Ken is late.
It's already five minutes after 12:00.
And that's why he needs to hurry.
And when you hurry, you go somewhere quickly.
Well, we need to hurry right now because it's time to review our key words.
So please say them with us.
watch.
watch.
John always wears a watch.
He knows the time.
o'clock.
o'clock.
I can meet you at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
clock.
clock.
Can you tell me the time?
I can't see the clock.
around.
around.
I can meet you around 3:00.
Is that OK?
minute.
minute.
We can take a break for five minutes.
All right, friends. Very good.
We'll be back in a moment.
