Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we're glad you joined us for a new month of learning together.
Today we are going to learn how to talk about SMALL TALK.
The title of our lesson is What Are You Reading?
What Are You Reading?
Well, the title of our lesson is also a question.
So let me ask you.
What are you reading?
Maybe some of you are reading your Let's Talk in English magazine to help you
get ready for today's lesson.
And that's a great idea.
Kevin, do you agree?
I agree. It is a great idea to read your Let's Talk in English magazine.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
Thank you for joining us in this new month of learning.
And to help you get ready for today's lesson, we will look at our Let's Begin
reading.
Now you can also read this in your magazine.
Or you can read along with Kevin.
Ready? Let's begin.
Megan is reading The Hobbit.
She thinks it's a great novel.
Rob hasn't read it, but he saw the movie.
In the story, a hobbit named Bilbo has a comfortable life.
But a wizard invites him to go on an adventure to find a treasure.
Does he find it?
Read the book to find out!
And we will find out a lot of interesting things in today's lesson.
So let's begin.
Hey, Megan, what are you reading?
Megan?
What? I'm sorry, what did you say?
I asked you what you were reading.
I'm reading The Hobbit.
It's a great novel!
Have you read it?
No, but I saw the movie last December.
I did, too.
But it was just the first movie.
There will be another one this December.
And a third one in the summer of 2014.
I plan to see them all!
Rob starts our conversation by asking a question.
Now this question is also the title of our lesson.
He asks Megan, "What are you reading?" And Kevin, what is Megan reading?
Well, she is reading The Hobbit.
That's a great novel.
Yes, The Hobbit is the name of a novel.
Well, let's talk about our key word here.
It is: novel.
Now a novel is a book that you can read.
A novel is a story.
Now why do you read novels?
You often read novels for fun.
Now Kevin, is the story in a novel a true story?
Well, no.
Usually the story in a novel is not true.
So you can just enjoy a novel.
And of course, there are many different kinds of novels.
The title of the novel in our conversation is The Hobbit.
And we learned that The Hobbit is not just a novel, but it is also a movie now.
The movie came out last December.
Let's talk about our next key word here.
It is: movie.
Now a movie is like a story that you can watch.
You can watch a movie on TV.
You can watch a movie on DVD.
Or how else can you watch a movie?
Well, you can watch a movie on the computer.
Maybe your computer can read DVDs.
Or you can go to a movie theater and watch a movie on a big screen.
Well, at the beginning of our conversation, Megan wasn't really listening to
Rob.
So she says, "What did you say?" What did you say?
This is a good question to ask when you want someone to repeat what they said.
Do you agree, Kevin?
What... What... what did you say?
Oh, I'm sorry.
Do you agree, Kevin?
Oh, yes, I agree.
Good. Well, I think that you'll agree with us as we want to keep learning.
So let's continue with Conversation B.
Have you read The Hobbit, Carol?
No. It's too long.
I don't really like to read long books.
But it's such a great story!
A hobbit named Bilbo enjoys a comfortable life until Gandalf the wizard comes.
Then he takes Bilbo on an adventure.
And what an adventure!
Are there more details in the book than in the movie?
Yes, there are!
And I love the way the author writes.
Well, in Conversation B, Megan and Rob talk more about the movie.
Megan says there is a hobbit named Bilbo, and he enjoys a comfortable life.
We have two key words here.
So let's look at our first one.
comfortable.
Now when something is comfortable, it means it feels good or it feels nice on
your body or inside.
So for example, I can say:
That jacket looks comfortable.
Where did you buy it?
Or you can say:
A.J. was not comfortable singing loudly.
So you can be comfortable when you feel something on the outside.
Or like A.J., he wasn't comfortable... comfortable inside because he did not
want to sing loudly.
So Megan says Bilbo enjoys a comfortable life.
That means his life was comfortable.
Let's look at that other key word.
life.
Now "life" is everything you do and everything you are when you were born till
the end.
For example, Jane's life is really hard.
She has to work and go to school.
We can say Alicia's life inspires me.
She is always helping people.
And we want to thank you for sharing your life with us.
We are glad that you make learning English part of your life.
So Bilbo had a comfortable life.
But wait.
Gandalf the wizard comes.
He takes Bilbo on an adventure.
Here we have our next key word.
adventure.
Now an "adventure" is when you travel and you go do new things and you go learn
new things.
Adventures are fun.
So let's use "adventure" in a sentence.
The Monkey King went on many adventures.
You can also say living in the woods is such an adventure!
Do you enjoy adventures?
Well, learning English can also be an adventure!
So why don't we continue our adventure with Conversation C?
So you saw the movie, too?
Yes. That's why I'm reading the book.
I want to know more about the story.
I'd like to know how the story ends.
Does Bilbo find the treasure?
If you want to know, you'll have to read the book.
Or you can wait more than a year to see the other movies.
It will be faster to just read the book - even for me!
Well, Carol wants to know how the story ends.
But Megan will not tell her.
Carol has a question.
She says, "Does Bilbo find the treasure?" Well, we found the key word in that
question.
Let's talk about it.
It's the word "treasure." Now treasure is very special.
Treasure is usually expensive.
We think of gold and silver and jewelry when we talk about treasure, right?
That's right.
And I've got some treasure right here.
And it's... it's all mine!
Uh, Kevin.
Yeah?
Where did you find that treasurer?
Oh. Well, I went on an adventure and I found this treasure.
Well, can I... can I have some of the treasure?
No! No! It's mine.
Well... OK, I guess it's good to share.
So here.
Thank you! Wow!
Now I have some treasure.
It's all mine.
What!?
Yes. OK, it's time for us to practice our key words.
So please say them with us.
Hmm. OK, our first key word is: novel.
novel.
I like good stories, so I read a lot of novels.
movie.
movie.
Jim and Tara saw a movie last night.
comfortable.
comfortable.
Paul likes this chair because it's so comfortable.
life.
life.
Mary's life changed when she became a mother.
adventure.
adventure.
I'm so excited!
I'm going on an adventure this weekend!
treasure.
treasure.
You can sell that treasure for a lot of money.
Great job with those.
Now we'll be right back.
