Hi, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we have a new week of lessons just for you.
Today we are going to talk about ENTERTAINMENT.
The title of our new lesson is A Program for Kids.
Now there are many different programs on TV and on the radio.
And some of those programs are made just for kids.
So today we are going to learn how to talk about some stories for kids.
So this should be fun.
Yes, this should be.
Did you watch programs for kids when you were a kid?
I sure did.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
Thank you for joining us today.
Now we're going to start by looking at our Let's Begin reading.
This will help you get ready for today's lesson.
Now you can also find it in your Let's Talk in English magazine.
Let's begin.
The TV station might start a new children's program.
Susie is looking at children's books for ideas.
She has a book about a snake and a mouse.
And she has a book about a strange king.
He lives under a bridge.
Ken likes dragons and cowboys.
Maybe the program can be about dragons or cowboys!
Ken can find out soon.
And we can find out what happens in Conversation A right now.
Hey, Susie, what kind of books do you have?
I have some children's books.
The TV station might start a new children's program!
Great! Are you helping with it?
Yes. I can get ideas from these books.
This book is about a snake and a mouse.
They are best friends.
Really? Don't snakes eat mice?
They don't in this book!
Well, in Conversation A, Susie is looking at some children's books.
The TV station might start a new children's program.
Well, I think this is pretty exciting.
I really enjoy children's programs.
Well, Susie is looking at a story.
It's an interesting story.
The book is about a snake and a mouse.
A snake and a mouse.
And we are going to look at one of our key words here.
It is "mouse." Now a mouse is a very small animal.
Many people do not like mice.
If you see a mouse in your house, what would you do, Kevin?
Well, I would look to make sure it goes away from my house.
Many times, mice are dirty.
Hey, I used "mice." Isn't that the plural of "mouse"?
Yes. When we talk about one mouse, we say "mouse." If we are talking about two
or more, we say "mice," M-I-C-E.
Have you heard the song?
Three blind mice.
Three blind mice.
See how they run.
See how they run.
Do you know that song, Kevin?
I've heard of that song.
But it was... It's been a long time since I've heard it.
Well, there are songs about mice.
And mice are in many children's stories.
One of my favorite children's story as a kid had mice in it that talked and wore
clothes.
Well, we have more to learn now in Conversation B.
Look at this other book!
I love this one!
My parents read it to me many times.
Yes, that one is a classic!
Children's books are so fun.
I know. Look at this other book.
It's about a strange king.
Why is he strange?
He lives under a bridge!
Why does he live under a bridge?
Read the book and find out!
Well, let's find out more about our key words, yeah?
Our first key word is "king." Now a king is a leader of a country.
And whatever he wants, he usually gets.
Now do we have many kings anymore?
Well, actually, yes.
Some countries still have a king.
Some countries used to have a king.
Maybe they don't have a king anymore today.
Or maybe their king isn't their leader.
But we often read about kings in stories.
So let's use "king" in some sentences.
The king wants everyone to like him.
The king has an interesting story.
The king is a good leader for his country.
Well, the story that Susie is reading has a king in it.
But something is strange about this king.
That's right.
Well, when we say "strange," we mean something is not what you think it should
be.
So what is strange about this king, Andrea?
Well, this king lives under a bridge.
Now usually, you think of a king living in a big, beautiful house.
You don't think of a king living under a bridge.
Well, we need to talk about one of our key words we used a lot.
And that is "bridge." A bridge is something we build so we can cross rivers.
Bridges can be made out of wood.
Bridges can be made out of metal.
Yes. Some cities have many bridges.
Some bridges are very big, and many cars can drive over the bridges.
Some bridges are also very famous.
And if you travel to a city, you might want to see a famous bridge.
Isn't it strange that a king lives under a bridge?
Yeah, a king should live in a big house, like Andrea said.
Yes, that is strange.
Well, I would like to find out more about this story.
Well, why don't we first find out more about our next key word or our next key
words - find out.
Now when you find out about something, it means you go and learn more about that
something.
For example, Ryan went to find out what was making that noise.
Now the past tense of "find" out is "found" out.
Rebecca found out that her brother was hiding her hairbrush.
Found out, F-O-U-N-D out.
All right.
Why don't we move on to Conversation C.
Can the children's program be about dragons?
I don't know. Maybe!
Can it be about cowboys?
Cowboys are fun.
I like cowboys, too!
Who is planning the children's program with you?
Oh, I'm not planning it.
You're just giving Carol some ideas?
Right. And I have a lot of ideas!
You do!
Oh, yeah! I'd like the story to be about cowboys, too.
Cowboys are great!
Wow! Kevin, well, you would make a great cowboy for a children's program.
Oh, thanks. That means a lot from a pretty lady.
Oh, shucks. Look at that!
Well, Kevin is wearing a cowboy hat.
Cowboys are in many children's stories.
You see cowboys on children's programs.
Some people like to watch cowboy movies.
Now cowboys sometimes talk in a different way and kind of a funny way, right,
Kevin?
Well, y'all just have to get used to it.
OK. Well, maybe the children's program will be about cowboys.
Or maybe it will be about dragons.
Let's talk about this key word.
dragon.
Now a dragon is a very big animal.
Dragons can sometimes fly.
And what comes out of a dragon's mouth?
Well, fire does.
That's right.
So there are many stories about dragons.
We already learned the word "snake." This year we are celebrating the Year of
the Snake.
But what was last year, Kevin?
Well, I reckon it was the Year of the Dragon.
That's right, the Year of the Dragon.
So we've talked about dragons.
We've talked about snakes.
We've talked about mice.
And we've talked about cowboys.
So I wonder what this children's program will be all about.
Let's review today's key words together now.
The first one is: mouse.
mouse.
The little gray mouse is eating a piece of cheese.
king.
king.
This country has a king.
He is a very important man.
bridge.
bridge.
Cross the bridge.
Don't walk in the water.
find out.
find out.
What time does the party start?
Can you find out?
dragon.
dragon.
This book is about a friendly green dragon.
Well, we found out a lot in today's conversations.
And we have more to learn together.
But first, let's take a break.
Y'all come back now.
You hear?
