Hello, friends.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Kevin.
And this is our Saturday show here at LTE TV.
Now this week we talked about the Lunar New Year.
We learned what traditions different countries have for Lunar New Year.
We also talked about buying gifts for special people.
We learned what we can buy at a baby shower or for a wedding.
All right, let's move on to our conversation reviews.
Hi, Joe!
I have something for you.
Hey, Rob.
Is it some work?
No. I have a gift for you!
A gift? Why?
Yesterday was Chinese New Year's Day.
Happy Chinese New Year!
Here's a red envelope for you!
A red envelope. Thanks!
You don't know much about this holiday.
I don't! I'm sorry.
Red envelopes are a traditional gift at Chinese New Year.
So people give them to their friends?
Most people don't.
Family members give red envelopes.
Parents give them to their young children.
So your parents don't give you a red envelope anymore?
No, I'm not a child anymore.
I have a job now.
Why are you giving a red envelope to me?
Red envelopes are also for fun.
I'm giving them to friends at the office.
But that's not the custom?
No. So what's inside a red envelope?
Can you guess?
Money? Am I right?
You're right!
Thanks, Rob.
Happy Chinese New Year!
Happy Year of the Snake!
Hi, Ken.
Did Rob give you a red envelope?
Yes, he did.
Did you get one, too?
Yes! Rob is so nice.
I know.
He wanted to share one of his culture's traditions with us.
But Lunar New Year isn't just part of Chinese culture.
It's not?
No. I just did a story about Lunar New Year!
Tell me about your story.
In Vietnam, people give red envelopes to celebrate Lunar New Year, too.
That's interesting.
Also, the first visitor of the new year is very important in Vietnam.
Why is that?
They believe if the first visitor is nice, their family will have good luck the
whole year.
Then you should invite a good person to be your first visitor!
People in Korea also celebrate Lunar New Year.
How do they celebrate?
They play board games!
Really! That's fun.
What else do they do?
Many people travel to the east coast of Korea.
They like to see the first sunrise of the new year.
That's a good way to start a new year.
Hi, Megan! Did you get the email about Maria's baby shower?
Yes! But who is Maria?
Maria is our weather reporter.
Her baby girl was born two weeks ago!
Good for her!
I love baby showers.
Great! Come to Maria's shower.
You can meet more people from the TV station!
OK, I can come!
I can meet the baby!
Yes! That's great!
What kind of gift can I bring?
Did you already buy a gift?
Yes, I bought a baby blanket!
Maria likes the store Baby World.
I got the blanket there.
What else does she want?
Do you know?
Yes, Maria has a list of things.
Here it is.
Wow! Maria wants many things!
Babies need many things!
Is Maria staying home with her baby?
Yes. She's excited!
She's a mom now!
Great!
OK, let's see...
Maria wants baby clothes, socks and hats.
But people already bought those things.
I see.
Oh, she needs a baby towel.
Is that a good gift?
Sure! Babies need baths!
Maria also wants a baby comb and brush.
Those are good gifts, too.
Thanks, Susie!
Hey, Ken.
It's almost time for lunch.
Do you want to eat together?
Thanks, Joe, but I don't have time today.
No problem.
I have to go to the mall during lunch.
Today is Valentine's Day, and I just remembered!
So you forgot to buy a gift for your girlfriend?
Yes. Hey, don't laugh at me.
Lots of guys forget birthdays or holidays.
I know.
I almost forgot about Valentine's Day last year!
What did you do?
I went shopping during my lunch break!
What did you buy for your girlfriend?
I bought her a dozen red roses at a flower shop.
How much did those cost?
They cost $80!
Roses are very expensive on Valentine's Day!
Oh, no! Maybe I won't buy flowers then!
You don't have to spend a lot of money.
You can buy a cheaper gift.
Like what?
Chocolate is a good Valentine's Day gift.
Or I could buy my girlfriend a necklace.
Those aren't always expensive.
That's true.
So what did you buy for your girlfriend this year?
Nothing!
She broke up with me when I almost forgot Valentine's Day last year!
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to the show.
Now what makes a good wedding gift?
We'll find out today.
Please welcome our special guest, Ms. Wendy Wedding.
Welcome, Wendy Wedding.
Tell us some good wedding gifts.
Dishes? Sheets?
A good wedding gift is a gift the couple wants!
How do people know what the couple wants?
The couple often makes a list at a department store or other big store.
This registry is on the store's website.
So people can look at it and choose something.
How do people find the couple's registry?
Ask the couple.
Or ask their friends or family members.
And what if someone received an invitation but can't go to the wedding?
Should they still buy a gift?
Yes! That's good manners.
In Asia, people give cash as a wedding gift.
Is that fine in the U.S.?
Yes, in many places, couples are happy to receive money when they get married!
But in some places in the U.S., people think it's rude.
So it's best to check first.
That's right.
Thanks, Wendy!
Are dishes, sheets and towels good wedding gifts?
Yes, but the couple getting married may not need or want them.
So people should check the couple's registry.
What if someone receives a wedding invitation but can't go to the wedding?
They should still give a gift because that shows good manners.
And what about giving money as a wedding gift in the U.S.?
It is fine in many places, but not all.
So check first!
Welcome back.
Now Chris and I were talking about our new year's celebration.
And Chris, you have a cool story to tell.
I... I do?
Do you really believe it is cool?
Yeah, man!
Share the story about how someone in your family almost broke everyone's dishes.
Oh. Hahaha... OK.
My cousin was eating a lot.
He already ate three plates of food.
When he went up to get more, he hit the table.
And the table almost fell over and broke everyone's dishes!
Yeah, that... that must have been scary.
My uncle later told my cousin that it was bad manners to eat so much.
Some of us have not finished our first plate!
Well, your cousin must not have been very happy.
No. He made a bad face and said, "I'm not hungry anymore." But we all knew he
was.
Well Chris, that was a cool story.
Now friends, I know you have some great stories to tell, too... in English.
Why don't we come back in a moment afterthis?
