The title of today's lesson is Buying a Wedding Gift.
Buying a Wedding Gift.
So let's talk about what you should do and what you shouldn't do when you buy a
wedding gift.
And we are going to try to explain this custom together.
Kevin, it's good to see you here again.

This lesson will help me a lot because I have many friends getting married.

Wendy Wedding talks about good wedding gifts.
Many people give dishes or sheets to the couple.
Even if you can't go to a wedding, you should still give a gift.
If you don't, it's bad manners.
Many couples receive money when they get married.
But in some places in America, that's not a good gift.
Well, now you are ready for our lesson.
Let's start with Conversation A.

We'll find out today.

Dishes? Sheets?
A good wedding gift is a gift the couple wants!
How do people know what the couple wants?
The couple often makes a list at a department store or other big store.
This registry is on the store's website.
So people can look at it and choose something.
How do people find the couple's registry?
Ask the couple.
Or ask their friends or family members.
What are good wedding gifts?
Dishes? Sheets?
Well, a good wedding gift is a gift the couple wants.
Let's look at our key words here.
The first one is...
dish.
Now a dish is something that you use to eat your food from.
You can eat your food from a dish.
You can serve food on a dish.
And of course, when you are done eating, it's a good idea to wash the dishes.
Dishes can be made out of many things.
You can have glass dishes, the really nice kinds.
Or you can have paper dishes, the ones you just throw away after you're done.
So dishes can be a good wedding gift.
Now what about sheets?
Well, let's talk about our key word here.
It's the word:
sheet.
Now you need a sheet or a set of sheets when you make your bed.
You usually have one sheet on the bottom, and another sheet on top.
You want to choose the color of your sheets carefully to match the color of your
room and your table and your lamp... many things.
The most important thing when buying a wedding gift is to buy a gift that the
couple wants.
Our last key word here is the word:
couple.
Now "couple" means two.
Kevin and I are a couple of teachers.
But when we talk about "a couple," when you think of a wedding, you think of the
husband and wife.
They are a couple.
Or a boyfriend and girlfriend are a couple.
So when we are talking about two things, you can say: Can you grab me a couple
of apples?
But when we are talking about two people, like a boyfriend and girlfriend, they
have a relationship.
That couple is in a relationship.
Good. Well, let's continue now with Conversation B.
And what if someone received an invitation but can't go to the wedding?
Should they still buy a gift?
Yes! That's good manners.
In Asia, people give cash as a wedding gift.
Is that fine in the U.S.?
Yes, in many places, couples are happy to receive money when they get married!
But in some places in the U.S., people think it's rude.
So it's best to check first.
That's right.

In Conversation B, we learned more about giving gifts for weddings.
When we receive an invitation to a wedding, that is always a good thing.
And that's our next key word.
To receive.
Now when you receive something, it means you get something that was given to
you.
For example, yesterday I received an email from Joshua.
Or you can say: Jimmy received some good advice about his life from his teacher.
Wendy Wedding tells us more about weddings.
She says it is good manners to give gifts, even though you can't go to a
wedding.
Hey, there's another key word.
manners.
When you have good manners, it means you do something people appreciate.
When you have bad manners, it means people did not like what you did.
Right. So it is good manners to say "thank you" when someone gives you a gift.
It's bad manners not to say anything at all.
Finally, we need to talk about the most important key word today,
because that is what we are talking about.
And that is "married".
married.
Now when someone is married, that person has a husband or a wife.
Andrea, are you married?
Yes, Kevin, I am married.
I have been married for five years now.
Wow! Congratulations!
That's a long time.

Are dishes, sheets and towels good wedding gifts?
Yes, but the couple getting married may not need or want them.
So people should check the couple's registry.
What if someone receives a wedding invitation but can't go to the wedding?
They should still give a gift because that shows good manners.
And what about giving money as a wedding gift in the U.S.?
It is fine in many places, but not all.
So check first!
Well, we learned a lot about buying wedding gifts today.
We learned how you can show good manners with wedding gifts.
And we learned that it's a good idea to check the couple's registry.
Now we saw this word "registry" in our conversations as well.
But let's talk about it now.
What is a registry, Kevin?
Well, a registry is a list of gifts you can buy a couple for their wedding.
It's stuff they want.
Right. And it's important that you buy a gift that the couple wants.
So look at their registry.
Sometimes a couple has their registry online.
Or they might have a registry at a store.
Well, it's time for us to review today's key words.
So please say them with us.
The first one is...
dish.
Dad washed the dishes after dinner.
sheet.
Put clean sheets on the bed before our guests arrive.
couple.
Mei is Ryan's girlfriend.
They are a couple.
receive.
Mike and Michelle received many beautiful wedding gifts.

Don't talk with your mouth full.
That's bad manners.

Christy and Paul are married.
They have two children.
