Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And you are here watching LTE TV.
Now today we have a new topic for you.
We are talking about SHOPPING.
The title of our lesson is Special Gifts for Special People.
Do you ever shop for gifts for people?
Well, today we are going to learn how to talk about shopping for gifts.
This is a fun topic, isn't it, Kevin?
It sure is.
I know many of you like to go shopping.
My name is Kevin.
Thank you for joining us today.
Now we have something special for you, just like every day - our Let's Begin
reading.
This will help you get ready for today's lesson.
So Let's Begin.
Maria is the weather reporter at the TV station.
Her baby girl was born two weeks ago.
Susie already bought a gift for the baby.
Megan is thinking about a gift.
She can buy a baby towel.
All babies need baths!
Or she can buy a baby comb and brush.
Those are also good gifts.
Thank you, Kevin.
And great job following along, everyone.
Now let's begin with Conversation A.
Hi, Megan! Did you get the email about Maria's baby shower?
Yes! But who is Maria?
Maria is our weather reporter.
Her baby girl was born two weeks ago!
Good for her!
I love baby showers.
Great! Come to Maria's shower.
You can meet more people from the TV station!
OK, I can come!
I can meet the baby!
Yes! That's great!
Well, we learned some good news in Conversation A.
Maria, the studio's weather reporter, had a baby.
And she is going to have a baby shower.
Doesn't a shower sound like fun, Kevin?
No. Don't you just wash yourself with water?
Yes, OK, that's one kind of shower.
But here we are talking about a baby shower.
Now this is a party to celebrate a baby.
Now sometimes you have a baby shower before the baby is born.
And sometimes you have a baby shower after the baby is born.
Well, let's talk about our key word here.
It's the word: born.
Now when a baby is born, that's the day the baby comes into the world.
When you ask someone, "When were you born?" you are asking about their birthday.
Sometimes when we talk about famous people, we say this famous person was born
on this day.
Well, Maria's baby girl was born two weeks ago.
And Megan says, "I love baby showers." So a baby shower is a time to buy gifts
for the baby or for the baby's parents and celebrate.
So we do have baby showers.
But you might also hear about a wedding shower.
This is a shower for a woman before she gets married.
And again, it's a party.
It's a time to celebrate, to play games and give gifts.
Well, let's continue with Conversation B.
What kind of gift can I bring?
Did you already buy a gift?
Yes, I bought a baby blanket!
Maria likes the store Baby World.
I got the blanket there.
What else does she want?
Do you know?
Yes, Maria has a list of things.
Here it is.
Wow! Maria wants many things!
Babies need many things!
That's right, babies do need many things.
They need diapers.
They need clothes.
They also need lots of love.
Now Megan asks Susie if she already bought a gift.
And that is one of our key words.
already.
Now what "already" means is it's something that was done before.
Or you talk about something that was done before.
So for example, Harold already ate lunch.
So he won't eat with us.
We can say Max already finished his homework.
Now he can play computer games.
How about a harder sentence?
Yvonne already washed her hands, so she can touch the food.
Well, that's because Yvonne is a cook, and you want your cooks to wash their
hands.
In Conversation B, Megan asks Susie a question and says: What else does she
want?
When you want to know something else about something, you can ask: What else?
For example, Andrea, besides hiking, what else do you like to do?
Ooh. Well, besides hiking, what else do I like to do?
I like to swim.
I like to go swimming.
That's great.
I like to go swimming, too.
What else do you like to do besides study English?
Do you like to swim as well?
What else do you like to do?
Well, good job reviewing these words with us.
Let's move on to Conversation C.
Is Maria staying home with her baby?
Yes. She is excited!
She's a mom now!
Great!
OK, let's see...
Maria wants baby clothes, socks and hats.
But people already bought those things.
I see.
Oh, she needs a baby towel.
Is that a good gift?
Sure! Babies need baths!
Maria also wants a baby comb and brush.
Those are good gifts, too.
Thanks, Susie!
We find out that Maria is staying home with her baby.
Wait. She's staying home with the baby?
Is she sick?
No, Kevin.
When a mom stays home with their baby, that means the mom doesn't go to work
anymore.
So Maria won't be coming to the TV studio anymore.
She's staying home with her baby.
She's a mom now.
Well, as our conversation continues, we learned about some good gifts - some
good gifts that you can bring to a baby shower.
Well, babies need many things.
Babies need baths.
Let's look at that key word together.
It is: bath.
Now a bath is a time when you clean your body.
When you take a bath, your body is in the water.
You wash your body.
And when you come out of the water, you are clean.
Some people prefer to take baths over taking showers.
They like how baths... taking a bath is relaxing and soothing.
Right, taking a bath is very relaxing.
People like to sit in the water, usually warm water, and relax.
And babies, of course, take baths.
Well, usually their parents give the baby a bath.
We also find out that Maria wants a baby comb and brush.
Let's look at these key words together.
The first one is "comb." Now you can use a comb to make your hair look nice.
A comb is what you use to make sure your hair is in the right place.
That's right.
Some men like to use a comb to split their hair in the middle.
So you can use a comb to comb your hair.
So this word can be a noun.
The comb is what you use.
But it can also be the action to comb your hair.
Our next key word here is the word "brush." Now you also use a brush on your
hair.
When you brush your hair, you put your hair in the right place.
Some people use combs, and some people use brushes.
Kevin, do you use a comb or a brush for your hair?
When I have short hair, I use a comb.
But when my hair was longer at one time, I used a brush because sometimes my
hair would, you know, get together and... it was not pretty.
OK.
So this word "brush," B-R-U-S-H, is an object.
It's what you use.
But it can also be a verb.
You use a brush to brush your hair.
You use a comb to comb your hair.
And now we want to use some time to practice our key words.
So say them with us.
The first one is: born.
born.
Kelly was born in 1999.
Now she is 14 years old.
already.
already.
I'm not hungry.
I already had dinner.
bath.
bath.
Daniel takes a bath before bed.
comb.
comb.
Do you have a comb?
I need one for my hair.
brush.
brush.
There is a brush in the bathroom.
You can use it.
Now you can take a break.
