Hi, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we're glad you joined us for a new week of learning together.
This week we are going to talk about TRAVEL.
Yes, TRAVEL.
Many people enjoy talking about travel.
And the title of our lesson is Rob's Trip.
Rob's Trip.
Well, we'll find out what kind of trip he is thinking about or maybe even
planning.
I'm glad Kevin is here again today.
Hello.
Hello, Andrea. Hello, everybody.
I really want to know what Rob wants to do for his trip.
My name is Kevin.
I'm happy you are here with us.
Let's do our Let's Begin reading, which will help you with our lesson.
Let's Begin.
Rob is looking for an airplane ticket.
He is planning his trip to Taiwan.
He and Megan talk about airplanes.
Rob doesn't fly often.
Megan does.
She flies around the country and visits friends.
She likes window seats on planes.
Then she can see everything.
Well, why don't we see or watch our Conversation A.
Hi, Rob. What are you doing?
I'm looking for an airplane ticket to Taiwan.
Are you still planning your trip?
Yes. The planes are pretty full.
Why?
Because a lot of people travel at Chinese New Year.
When is Chinese New Year?
It's February 10.
That's soon.
I know.
Megan starts our conversation by asking Rob a question.
She says, "What are you doing?" What are you doing?
When you want to find out what someone is doing, ask this question.
What are you doing?
Hey, Kevin, what are you doing?
Well, I am teaching Let's Talk in English with you, Andrea.
Well, I'm glad that's what you are doing right now.
Well, what is Rob doing?
He tells us that he's looking for an airplane ticket to Taiwan.
And we see two key words in that sentence.
Let's look at our first one together.
It is: airplane.
airplane.
Now if you want to fly from one place to another place, you can take an
airplane.
An airplane is a very big machine that flies.
An airplane kind of looks like a bus with wings, doesn't it, Kevin?
There are many different kinds of planes for many different kinds of travel.
If you are flying over a big ocean, you would want to ride a big airplane.
So our key word is "airplane," but like Kevin said, you can also just say:
plane.
Do you enjoy taking planes?
Or do you like airplanes?
Well, to get on an airplane, you need a ticket.
And we need to talk about this key word.
ticket.
Now a ticket means that you... you paid to get into something.
You usually have to pay for a ticket, especially an airplane ticket.
Airplane tickets are usually expensive.
But you need that ticket to get on the airplane.
We can also buy concert tickets.
If you want to listen to your favorite singer, you buy a ticket to watch him or
her sing.
So airplane tickets, concert tickets.
Can you think of any other kinds of tickets?
I can.
When I go to see a movie, I first need to buy a movie ticket.
Great.
Uh, if I want to watch a sports event, I need to buy a ticket.
And if you want to buy an airplane ticket, it's good to buy that ticket early
because Rob is finding that the planes are pretty full.
Now when a plane is full or pretty full, that means there are not many tickets
left.
Many people already bought tickets.
Well, let's see what happens next in Conversation B.
Do you travel a lot?
I don't travel too often.
Do you?
I fly to places three or four times a year.
Where do you go?
I visit friends in different cities around the country.
I don't fly much.
I usually drive.
I don't. I don't like car trips.
I like planes.
In Conversation B, we learned that Megan travels often.
She says she travels three or four times a year.
Why?
Well, to visit friends.
And that brings us to our key word - to visit.
Now when you visit someone, you go see someone for a short time.
But you can also visit something.
Let me use this in a sentence.
We should visit our friend in the hospital.
Andrea, do you have a sentence for us?
Sure.
Sarah likes to visit churches in different cities.
So when she travels to different cities, she likes to go to or visit churches.
As you can see, a church is a place or a thing.
You can visit places too.
For example, we want to visit the museum tomorrow.
That means we will go to a museum for maybe three hours and see what they have.
Now Megan says she visits her friends around the country.
When she says "around the country," she means all over the country.
It means not just one place, but many places in the country.
Andrea, can you use "around the country" in a sentence?
Sure.
Simon travels around the country in a small airplane.
He can fly the airplane and travel around the country.
We can also say the president travels around the country to look at how his
people are doing.
Now we learned that... how to use the word "to visit," now we will learn some
more in Conversation C.
Why do you like plane trips?
I usually get a window seat.
Then I can see everything.
I don't like window seats.
I can't move around the plane.
So you can't sit for hours on a plane.
No. I like car trips.
I can stop and walk around.
But you can't drive to Taiwan.
Too bad!
So Megan doesn't like car trips.
We know she likes planes.
Rob wants to know more.
So he asks her, "Why do you like plane trips?" Now this is a good question to
find out more about someone's answer.
Now Kevin, I know that you like Mexican food a lot.
Yeah.
But why do you like Mexican food?
I love Mexican food because it's delicious.
It's spicy.
It's salty.
It's... so good.
OK. Well, good. Thank you for your answer.
Now I understand a little bit more why you like that food so much.
Well, why does Megan like plane trips?
She tells us that she usually gets a window seat, then she can see everything.
Let's look at our key word here.
The first one is "window." Now a window is something that you can look out of.
Your room might have a window, then you can look outside.
Airplanes have small windows so you can look outside and see what is there.
That's right.
A restaurant can have windows as well.
Like a good Mexican restaurant, when they open the windows, I can smell the good
food.
Well, it's true.
You can open windows.
And you can close windows.
But you can't open and close a window on an airplane.
But here we see the phrase: window seat.
And we see another key word there.
Let's talk about it.
It's the word "seat." Now a seat is a place where you sit.
Everyone has a seat on an airplane.
That's right.
Uh, can we still talk about the Mexican restaurant?
All the seats were filled.
Well, it must have been a popular place if all the seats are filled.
When you buy a ticket for a movie, that means you have a seat to watch the
movie.
Now when you take a plane or take an airplane, do you like to have a window
seat, Kevin?
Hmm, I actually prefer the aisle seat.
A-I-S-L-E.
Why?
Well, my legs are a little long.
And sometimes I like to stretch them out into the aisle.
So a window seat is beside a window on an airplane.
And an aisle seat is next to the aisle.
The aisle is the place where people can walk on a plane.
Now let's review today's key words together.
The first one is: airplane or plane.
airplane or plane.
Mark likes airplanes.
He flies to many places.
ticket.
ticket.
Martha is buying an airplane ticket to Canada.
visit.
visit.
John visits his grandmother every week.
window.
window.
Look out the window.
What do you see?
seat.
seat.
Please sit down in that seat.
Great job!
Now it's time to take a break.
But we'll be rightback.
