Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we're glad you joined us today.
We have a new topic and a new lesson for you.
Our topic is ENTERTAINMENT.
The title of our lesson is A Contest.
And we are going to learn how to talk about a dance contest.
Well, this sounds like it's going to be a fun lesson.
It sure is.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
Are you excited about learning about a dance contest?
Well, let's go ahead and begin with the Let's Begin reading.
The TV station is having a freestyle dance contest next month.
People can choose how they dance.
Professional dancers can't enter the contest.
That wouldn't be fair.
People under age 16 may not enter the contest, either.
Children are hard to judge because they are so cute!
Well, it sounds like we are going to have a lot of fun.
We have lots of fun every day, don't we?
So let's go ahead and go to Conversation A.
Hey, Rob. What are you working on?
I'm helping Carol with a project.
The TV station will have a contest next month!
What kind of contest?
A dance contest.
Really? What kind of dance? Ballet?
No. Ballet is too hard.
It's a freestyle dance contest!
That will be fun!
People can choose how they dance.
That's right.
Well, this is going to be interesting.
The TV station will have a contest next month.
And we know that it will be a dance contest.
Let's talk about our key word here.
It is the word "contest." Now a contest is a time where you see who is the best
at something.
So if you have a dance contest, you see who can do a dance in the best way.
That's right.
Have you ever heard of singing contests?
I'm sure you have.
There are singing contests all over television.
Right. Maybe you have been in a speech contest or an English contest.
Contests can be a lot of fun.
You prepare for a contest.
And you do your best.
Now of course, we are having a dance contest.
And we learned about two different kinds of dance in this conversation.
What's the first one that Ken shares, Kevin?
Well, this dance is called ballet.
Ah, yes, ballet.
And Kevin is going to show us a little ballet, right?
Um... sure.
Yeah.
So in ballet you are poised and dignified and smooth and...
Wow!
And I can't dance ballet very well.
Well, Kevin, that's OK. You tried.
But it's true. When you dance ballet, you go very slowly, and you think about
what you are doing.
The music is also usually very nice to listen to.
So ballet is a kind of dance.
Another kind of dance is freestyle.
Kevin, show us some freestyle dancing.
OK, are you ready for this?
It'll be awesome. OK.
Oh. Oh, wow! Look it!
Kevin is moving all over.
He's very free as he moves.
Uh, thank you, Kevin. Thank you. Stop. Great.
Wasn't that awesome?
That was... great. Great job, Kevin.
So a dance contest.
Two different kinds of dances - ballet and freestyle.
Well, we have more to learn in Conversation B.
So people can dance ballet if they want to!
Well, yes, they could.
But most people probably won't.
Who can enter the contest?
Anyone can enter!
Well, not really.
Professional dancers can't enter the contest.
Is that one of the contest rules?
Yes, it is.
Professional dancers would beat everyone else.
Right. That wouldn't be fair.
Well, we just learned who can and cannot enter this contest.
Ken asks, "Who can enter the contest?" Well, that's one of our key words.
enter.
enter.
"Enter" means to go into, especially if you have not been in it before.
So when you enter a contest, you were not a part of it, but you will be.
Yes. So if you are interested in being part of a contest, then you should enter
the contest.
Let's use it in an example sentence.
Sarah entered a singing contest.
She is practicing her singing a lot for the contest.
You can enter a contest.
You can also enter a room.
Sarah entered a room.
Well, we learned that not everyone can enter the dance contest.
Professional dancers can't enter the dance contest.
Now if someone is a professional, like a professional dancer, that means being a
dancer is their job or they get paid for doing it.
We often see this word when we talk about professional athletes, like he is a
professional baseball player.
That means that being a baseball player is his job.
Well, having a professional dancer at this contest would not be very fair.
Hey, that's our next key word.
fair.
Now when something is fair, that means everybody has the same chance.
Everybody is pretty much the same.
So if there was a professional dancer, that would not be fair.
All right, let's move on to Conversation C.
Tell me another rule.
OK. "You must be 16 or older to enter the LTE TV dance contest.".
That's a good rule.
You don't want to judge children.
They're too cute!
I know.
We want this contest to be for teenagers and adults.
Those are good rules.
Are there more?
Yes, Carol and I are still working on them.
Good luck!
Thanks!
I agree with what Ken says when he says you don't want to judge children.
But we do want to look at our key word here.
It is the verb "judge." Now when you judge something, you talk about how good
something is or how bad something is.
When you judge a contest, you decide who is the best in that contest.
That's right.
I have been to a barbecue contest before.
And people judge which barbecue tastes the best.
It's the meat and the sauce.
Wow, it would be fun to judge that contest.
Mmhm.
I have judged several speech contests - English speaking contests.
And it's not easy to judge who is the best at something.
But it's important to judge and do your best so you can help everyone.
Well, why don't you want to judge children?
Ken says they're too cute.
Let's talk about our next key word together.
It is: cute.
cute.
Now if something is cute, it is sweet to look at.
Well, Kevin... Kevin, you're cute.
I am?
I would think you would say babies are cute or rabbits are cute.
I'm not a baby or a rabbit.
Well, that's true.
You're not a baby and you're not a rabbit.
But we do use this word "cute" to talk about adults sometimes, too.
You might tell someone: Oh, your hair looks cute today.
Or, that is a cute shirt.
But I'm sure Kevin would rather hear me say that he was handsome instead of
cute, right, Kevin?
Really? You think so?
Well yes, I... I do, Kevin.
You're a handsome guy.
Oh, thanks!
So who would you say is cute, or what would you talk about as being cute?
Puppies are cute.
Oh, puppies are so cute.
Yeah. OK.
Well, we can think about many cute things.
But for now, let's review today's key words together.
The first one is: contest.
contest.
Our school has a singing contest every year.
enter.
enter.
Joni entered a writing contest.
She won $100!
fair.
fair.
Pete has three pieces of pizza, and I only have one.
That's not fair.
judge.
judge.
Mr. White is the art teacher.
So he will judge the art contest.
cute.
cute.
Look at that little baby.
He is so cute!
Good job!
Now we'll be rightback.
