Hi, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we're glad you joined us for a new week of learning together.
Today we are going to talk about HOBBIES.
Yes, HOBBIES.
And the title of our lesson is Making Things.
Making Things.
I think you'll enjoy what we talk about today, right, Kevin?
That's right, Andrea.
Hello, everybody.
My name is Kevin.
Now I like making things.
Do you?
So let's start learning with the Let's Begin reading.
Carol can sew.
She makes many things with her sewing machine.
She makes bags and blankets.
Megan can't sew.
But she wants to learn.
She can buy a sewing machine at a craft store.
Carol can give Megan some free sewing lessons.
And we are going to give you some English lessons.
Now let's go to Conversation A.
Hi, Megan!
Are you enjoying your new job here?
Yes! I really like my new job, Carol!
Great! Do you have any questions?
Well, I do have one question.
But it's not about work.
That's OK. What's your question?
Can you sew?
Yes, I can sew. Why?
I want a sewing machine.
Where can I buy one?
Megan tells Carol that she really likes her job.
She also has a question for Carol.
But it's not about work.
Her question is: Can you sew?
Can you sew?
And we see our key word in this question.
It is the verb "sew." Now when you sew, S-E-W, you usually use a needle and a
thread to put things together.
You sew.
Kevin, can you sew?
I can sew.
In fact, I learned how to sew in Boys Club in America.
It was an important skill to learn.
So you can sew by hand.
You use your hand and a needle and thread, and you sew something together.
Maybe you sew a T-shirt or you sew another piece of clothing.
But you can also use a sewing machine.
Now a sewing machine does the sewing for you.
And you can sew a lot more stuff with a sewing machine.
Kevin, have you ever used a sewing machine?
I have not used a sewing machine.
But it looks like it could help sewing a lot.
It would make things much faster.
Yes, the sewing machine does make sewing a lot faster.
Well, Megan says, "I want a sewing machine. Where can I buy one?" I want
something.
Where can I buy one?
Or, where can I buy it?
Let's use this in some other ways.
I want a new computer.
Where can I buy one?
Well, you can buy a new computer at a computer store.
Andrea, I want a trumpet.
Where can I buy one?
Well, you can buy a trumpet at a music store.
OK, great job, friends.
Now where can we learn more?
We can learn more in Conversation B.
There is a big craft store on Martin Road.
They sometimes have good deals on sewing machines.
Great! What's the name of the store?
It's Kelly's Crafts.
So what kind of things do you sew?
I don't sew anything.
I can't sew!
But you want to learn!
Yes! Then I can make a lot of things.
That's right!
Conversation B starts off with Carol saying there is a big craft store on Martin
Road.
Now that brings us to our first key word in this conversation.
And that is: craft.
craft.
Now a craft is something you make.
It can be small.
It can be big.
But it's something that decorates your house.
It makes your home or office look better.
Andrea, do you like to make crafts?
Actually, I do like to make crafts.
I like to create new things.
But I just don't have a lot of time to make crafts.
What about you, Kevin?
What are some crafts that you can create?
Well, I can make candles.
I buy these small candles.
And I buy a jar.
I fill the jar with lots of different colors of sand.
Then I put the candle in.
And it's a great craft.
You have a candle that has lots of colors.
Now Andrea, Carol says there is a big craft store.
Where is it?
Ooh, the craft store is on Martin Road.
OK. If you want to tell someone where something is on a street, you say it is on
that street.
So when you tell someone where the supermarket is, you tell them it is on Elm
Street.
Andrea, can you give us another example?
Sure. You can ask someone: Where do you work?
Oh, I work on Selve Street.
My office is on Selve Street.
All right, that's great.
So if you want to tell someone where something is, you tell them it is on
something Street.
Now do you like to make crafts?
Crafts are fun.
So let's move on with Conversation C.
What kinds of things do you sew?
I make clothes, bags, blankets and other things.
Wonderful! Maybe I can make those things, too.
Does Kelly's Crafts have sewing classes?
Yes, they do.
OK. Great!
You can also get some free lessons.
I know a place.
Really? Where?
My house! I can teach you!
Well, we know that Carol can sew.
We also know that Megan can't sew.
In Conversation C, we find out some things that Carol can sew.
She tells us that she makes clothes, bags, blankets and other things.
Well, let's look at our key words here.
The first one is: bag.
bag.
Now a bag is something that you use to carry things in.
I take a bag to work every day.
I have my wallet in my bag.
I have my keys in my bag.
And I have other things that I might need at work in my bag.
Kevin, are there different kinds of bags?
Well, sure there are.
There are shopping bags.
You bring these bags when you go shopping so that when you buy something, you
can put it in the bag and keep shopping or go home easier.
Well, Carol makes bags.
I'm sure she can sew some beautiful bags.
She also makes blankets.
Let's talk about that key word.
It is "blanket." Now a blanket is something that you use to stay warm.
When you are sleeping, when you are lying in your bed, you probably have a
blanket that you put over your body to stay nice and warm.
You don't have to just be in bed.
You can also be watching television, and you might think it's a little cold.
I would like a blanket to cover me.
Or if you go to the beach, maybe you take a beach blanket along.
You put the blanket down on the sand.
And then you can sit on the blanket and enjoy a day at the beach.
So Carol makes bags, blankets and other things.
And we also find out that she can teach Megan how to sew.
Carol says, "You can also get some free lessons." Let's talk about that key word
together.
free.
Now if something is free, it does not cost any money.
It's always nice to get things for free, right, Kevin?
It sure is, especially if you have been planning to pay lots of money for it.
But not all free things are always good.
Some free things are kind of cheap and they break easily.
Yeah, that's true.
But I like going to a restaurant or to a place that gives you something free.
It makes me feel good.
We talked about Doughnut Day earlier this month.
And there's one day every year that you can get a free doughnut.
It's nice to get something that you do not have to pay for.
Mmm... I love doughnuts.
I also love our key words.
So let's review them.
sew.
sew.
Kelly can sew well.
She makes her own clothes.
craft.
craft.
In December, we make Christmas crafts in art class.
bag.
bag.
I have books and clothes in my bag.
blanket.
blanket.
I use a blanket in the winter.
free.
free.
This food is free.
You don't have to pay for it.
Great job, everyone.
We'll be right back.
