Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we're glad you joined us.
Today we continue talking about TRAVEL.
The title of our lesson today is Where Would You Go?
Where Would You Go?
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Well, think about your answer to that question.
And let's go see Kevin.
Hello, Andrea. Hello, everybody.
My name is Kevin.
Now I'm very happy to be here with you.
So let's begin with our Let's Begin reading.
Susie is asking people about winter travel.
One girl wants to go to the Sapporo Snow Festival.
She wants to enjoy the winter events there and see people create beautiful snow
sculptures.
One man doesn't like the climate in this city.
It's freezing!
He wants to fly to a warm place in winter.
Great job.
Now let's begin with Conversation A.
Excuse me, may I ask you a question?
Sure. What?
Where would you like to travel in winter?
Hmm... that's a good question.
There are a lot of places I'd like to go.
Name one.
I'd like to go to the Sapporo Snow Festival.
That's one of Japan's biggest winter events.
Yes. People there create beautiful snow sculptures.
Those would be fun to see.
Susie starts our conversation by saying, "Excuse me, may I ask you a question?"
Now this is a polite way to see if someone is ready to answer a question.
Excuse me, may I ask you a question?
Well, the girl Susie is talking to said, "Sure. What?" And what question does
Susie ask her, Kevin?
Well, Susie asks: Where would you like to travel in winter?
Ah, yes, we are talking about winter travel.
So where would you like to travel in winter?
Well, the girl shares that she would like to go to the Sapporo Snow Festival.
That's one of Japan's biggest winter events.
And we have a key word to talk about here.
It is the word "event." Now an event is something that you can go to.
When you go to a festival, there are often many different events.
You can be part of an event, enjoy an event, and even learn from an event.
Sometimes an event can just be a friend's birthday party.
An event can also be a circus coming to your city.
Some people might ask: Will you go to the circus event this coming weekend?
Well, one event at the festival is snow sculptures.
People there create beautiful snow sculptures.
Let's talk about this key word here.
It's a verb - the verb: create.
Now when you create something, that means you make it.
When you create a snow sculpture, you make a snow sculpture.
That's right.
Artists create paintings, sculptures.
Musicians create music.
I'm sure all of you create something as well.
Well, let's continue with another interview in Conversation B.
Excuse me!
Could you answer a question for me?
OK. What's the question?
Where would you like to travel in winter?
I'd like to fly to a warm place!
It's freezing here in winter!
So you don't like our cold climate?
No. I like warm weather.
And I don't ski or snowshoe.
So you wouldn't go to a place with snow?
No thank you!
Send me to a beach!
Well, in this conversation, Susie talks with a man and asks him the same
question.
He responds by saying he would like to fly to a warm place.
Now that brings us to our next key word.
That is "fly," to fly.
When you fly, you move through the air.
So we can say birds fly, airplanes fly.
You can also say a ball will fly through the air.
Andrea, do you like flying on an airplane?
I actually do enjoy flying in an airplane because it means... or it usually
means that I'm going to a new place.
So when the man says, "I'd like to fly to a warm place," he means he would like
to take an airplane and go to a new place that is warm.
He wants to go to a warm place because he says, "It's freezing here in winter."
Well, that's another key word.
That is: freezing.
Now freezing means really, really, really cold, so cold that water will turn
into ice.
But when this man says "freezing," he just means really, really, really cold.
Andrea, do you like it when it's freezing outside?
Actually, I don't like it when it's freezing outside.
Now I am Canadian, so I'm used to winter.
I'm used to freezing weather.
But I still don't like it.
Make sure you wear a lot of clothes to stay warm when the weather is freezing.
So our man does not like the freezing weather.
So Susie asks a question: So you don't like our cold climate?
Hey, that's another key word.
Our key word is "climate." Now climate is a lot of things.
It is not only the weather, so if it's raining or if it's sunny; or the
temperature, if it's cold or hot.
It's also the air, if it's wet or dry.
It's all of these things when we say "climate." So Andrea, can you talk about
the climate in Canada?
Well in Canada, we have many different climates.
In the winter, our climate is freezing.
But in the the summer, it gets very hot in Canada.
Now some places have a hot climate all the time.
So we say that country has a hot climate.
All right, I hope our friend does fly somewhere where it's not freezing.
Now let's move on with our Read It.
Many people love to travel.
They may travel any season of the year.
Some people like a warm climate, so they fly to a warm place in winter.
They want to get away from the cold and snow.
Other people enjoy ice and snow.
They like freezing weather.
Thousands of people travel to the Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan.
It's one of Japan's biggest winter events.
At the festival, people create all kinds of beautiful snow sculptures.
People enjoy them a lot.
We review what we learned in our conversations and our Read It today.
And our Read It starts by saying many people love to travel.
Many people love to travel.
That is true. Traveling is popular.
Many people love to travel.
Well, let's try to use this phrase in some other ways.
Many people love to (blank).
I can say many people love to use Facebook.
Or, many people love to go shopping.
I can say many people love to watch movies.
I can also say many people love to play sports.
And of course, many people love to learn English.
We're glad you're here learning with us.
We find out some more about the Sapporo Snow Festival.
One sentence tells us that thousands of people travel to the Sapporo Snow
Festival in Japan.
Thousands of people.
Now this helps us understand what a big event this is.
Thousands of people come and enjoy the event.
Let's try to use this phrase in some other ways.
Thousands of people live in this city.
Then we know that it's a pretty big city.
Thousands of people went to the event at City Hall this weekend.
So it was a big event.
Well, I can say thousands of people went to Jay Chou's concert.
I can also say thousands of people went to my website.
And we know that thousands of people want to practice our key words, right?
Yes. Let's do that now.
The first one is: event.
