Hi, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we are glad that you joined us for a new week of lessons.
Today we are going to start by talking about FOOD.
Yes, we are going to talk about FOOD.
I like talking about food.
And I hope you do, too.
The title of our lesson today is Party Food!
Yes, Party Food.
Well, let's go and talk to our friend Kevin.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
I love this lesson because I love food.
So let's begin with our Let's Begin reading.
Ken will have a Super Bowl Party.
He can have lots of food.
People usually eat party food with their fingers.
So Ken can have shrimp and popcorn at the party.
Ken likes meat.
So he can have some pork or beef dishes at the party, too.
And now we can begin with Conversation A.
What are you reading in the newspaper, Ken?
I'm reading about the Super Bowl.
Oh, yes! The Super Bowl is on February 3.
That's right.
Where will you watch the game this year?
I don't know.
I may go to Players Restaurant.
They have a lot of TVs.
And the food is good.
I love their pork sandwiches.
In Conversation A, we find out about Players Restaurant.
Well, we learned that they have a lot of TVs, and that their food is good.
And Ken tells us that he loves their pork sandwiches.
Well, we love to talk about key words.
So let's look at the first one together.
It is: pork.
Now we use the word "pork" when we are talking about meat.
And pork is a special kind of meat.
Pork is meat that comes from a pig.
That's right.
So whenever you want to eat pigs, or you want to have pig meat in your food, you
can say... ask: Is there pork?
And some people don't like to eat pork.
So they can ask a restaurant:
Do you have pork?
I don't want any pork in my food.
Yeah, that's true. Not everybody likes pork.
But pork is a popular meat.
And of course, you can eat pork sandwiches or pork sausages.
You can also find pork soup or pork and noodles.
Well, we do know that Ken loves their pork sandwiches.
And maybe he will order one if he goes to watch the Super Bowl.
Now we see this at the beginning of our conversation.
Ken says, "I'm reading about the Super Bowl." And I think that Kevin can tell us
a bit about the Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl is the last game of the... of the American football season.
And we find out who is the best team of the year with the winner of the Super
Bowl.
So it's an exciting event, especially for football fans.
Well, let's keep learning in Conversation B.
I like the food at Players, too.
They have a lot of beef on the menu.
But the restaurant is always so crowded.
True. Where will you watch the game?
At home.
Maybe I can have a Super Bowl party.
Good idea!
You can invite some people from the office.
Yes! What food can I have at the party?
Party food!
Mmm, party food.
Speaking of food, we learned that Players has a lot of beef on the menu.
Now that brings us to our next key word.
That key word is "beef." Now beef is a kind of meat that is from a cow.
So any part of a cow and you're eating it, you say you were eating beef.
Andrea, are there any dishes that you enjoy that have beef in it?
Uh, yes, I really enjoy beef noodle soup.
That's beef and noodles and soup.
It's a popular dish.
That's right.
Remember, friends, you don't say "cow noodle soup." If you are going to eat it,
we say: beef.
Now one of my favorites is tacos - beef tacos.
I love Mexican food, and I love beef.
And putting them together just makes me... oh, so happy!
Wow! Kevin, you're getting pretty excited thinking about beef.
Yes, yes, I am.
But it seems like Ken is also excited for something else.
He might have a Super Bowl party.
Now during the Super Bowl in America, people often have parties.
They invite people to their homes, or they go out to a restaurant, and they
watch the Super Bowl together.
The Super Bowl is really, really important to Americans.
And I watch the Super Bowl every year.
So why don't we continue on with our next conversation - Conversation C?
What kind of party food?
Well, people usually eat party food with their fingers.
You can have shrimp.
That's a good idea.
I like shrimp.
Popcorn is good for parties, too.
I love popcorn!
Chili is also a great party food.
And the weather is cold.
So people want hot food.
True. And I love chili.
Me, too! Now I'm hungry!
Let's eat lunch.
We are talking about party food.
And we find out different kinds of party food in Conversation C.
And we have three key words.
One, two, three.
And I just counted the key words with my fingers.
Well, that brings us to our first one here.
It is the word: finger.
finger.
Now your fingers are on your hands.
And of course, our fingers are very important.
We use them every day.
That's right.
My fingers are very, very important to me because I play the guitar.
I need these fingers to make music.
Well, in our conversation, we find out that party food is usually eaten with
your fingers.
So you don't need a big plate and a knife and a fork.
You can just eat party food with your fingers.
And one kind of party food we talk about is shrimp.
You can have shrimp.
And we can look at that key word.
shrimp.
Now shrimp is something that you can eat.
Shrimp comes from the ocean.
You can eat big shrimp or little shrimp.
You can eat shrimp in different ways.
Hey Kevin, do you like shrimp?
I... I can have shrimp.
I'm... I don't love it.
But I like it, sure.
OK. Well, shrimp is a popular food that you might have at a party.
And of course, you can just pick it up with your fingers.
Another kind of party food is popcorn.
Let's talk about that key word.
popcorn.
Now Kevin, when do you usually eat popcorn?
Or what are you doing when you eat popcorn?
Well, what people usually do when they're eating popcorn is... they are usually
watching a movie.
Right. We think of popcorn and movies.
But of course, you can eat popcorn whenever you want to.
It's a popular snack food, and it's a popular party food.
Kevin, do you like popcorn?
I like popcorn.
But I don't like it when it gets stuck in my teeth.
Hmm, that's true.
Yeah.
Well, you can get popcorn that is salty (salty popcorn) or popcorn that is
sweet, that has sugar in it.
That's sweet popcorn.
But I really like sweet and salty popcorn.
Wow.
What about you?
Now let's review today's key words together.
The first one is: pork.
pork.
These dumplings have pork and vegetables in them.
beef.
beef.
Beef comes from cows.
finger.
finger.
I have five fingers on one hand.
shrimp.
shrimp.
Shrimp is one kind of seafood.
popcorn.
popcorn.
Popcorn is a good snack.
And you did a good job.
We'll be rightback.
