Hello, and welcome to Let's Talk in English here at LTE TV.
My name is Kevin.
And I am happy you are here with me this Saturday.
Now this week we talked about using a calendar.
Rob is using a calendar to remember important dates.
We also talked about getting a cold.
When you have a cold, is your throat sore?
What do you take to help a cold?
Well, let's review this week's conversations.
Hi, Ken! When is your birthday?
Is it in April?
No. My birthday is July 9.
Oh, OK.
Why are you asking about my birthday?
I am putting your birthday in my calendar.
Good. Then you can remember my birthday.
Did I forget your birthday last year?
Yes, you did.
I'm sorry.
No problem.
What other dates can I put in my calendar?
Doesn't your calendar already have dates?
Yes. It has months and days.
And it has most holidays.
But it doesn't have your friends' birthdays.
Right. And those dates are important, too.
They are.
What about the TV station's annual meeting?
Yes. I can put that in my calendar.
When is the annual meeting?
It's at the beginning of September.
Really? Last year, the meeting was at the end of August.
I can ask Carol about it.
How about Doughnut Day?
What?
Doughnut Day is on the first Friday in June.
Really? I love doughnuts.
Many stores give away doughnuts on Doughnut Day.
I'm putting that in my calendar!
Hi, Susie. When is your birthday?
My birthday is November 3.
OK. Thanks.
I'm putting all my friends' birthdays in my calendar.
That's a good idea.
I'm putting in other important dates, too, like the annual meeting.
I see.
One of my goals for the new year is to plan ahead.
Good for you!
I need to decide when I can take a vacation this year.
Did you take a vacation last year?
No. So I am really ready for a vacation!
When do you want to go?
I want to go to Taiwan for Chinese New Year.
When is that?
February 10.
If I go a few days early, then I can also be there for my birthday.
What day is your birthday?
February 7.
Oh, right.
I checked the January TV schedule.
But I didn't see February's schedule.
The schedule isn't ready yet.
Talk to Carol about your vacation.
She will want to know the dates.
Right. I will talk to her today.
Then she can plan the schedule around those dates.
Thanks, Susie!
Hi, Megan. How are you?
Not very good, Ken.
I have a cold.
That's not good.
I know. My throat really hurts.
Can you go home and rest?
No, I can't.
I'm really busy today.
Do you have any cold medicine?
No, I don't.
I do. I can give you some.
Can the medicine help my sore throat and runny nose?
Yes. It helps me.
And you don't feel sleepy?
No, I don't.
Good. I can't be sleepy.
I am too busy!
Carol really needs my help today!
But she doesn't need your cold.
She could catch it from you.
I know. But I can't go home!
Here is the medicine.
Thank you.
I can take some now.
Then I can feel better.
Eat some chicken soup, too.
That always helps me.
Good idea!
I can have some for lunch.
Maybe I can have some chicken soup, too.
Why? Are you sick, too?
No. I really like chicken soup.
Hi, Joe. How is everything?
Do you like your job so far?
I do!
Everyone is nice and very helpful.
That's great.
Are you feeling OK?
Not really.
But I can't get sick.
I just started working here!
Are you catching a cold?
I think so.
My throat is a little sore.
And I'm coughing a lot.
That's not good.
I try to stay well, but I usually get a cold in the winter.
Do you get enough rest?
Do you drink a lot of water and wash your hands a lot?
Yes, I do all those things.
And I take vitamin C.
Then you're doing all the right things.
But I'm still getting sick!
You can't always stop a cold.
Well, at least I don't have a fever.
Megan finally came down with one.
So Carol sent her home.
Megan must have the flu.
Yes. She didn't want to go home, but she really didn't feel well.
When you're sick, you should stay home.
Susie, you're sneezing a lot.
Maybe you should go home and rest.
I can't! I'm too busy!
So, Nurse Nan, how can people avoid getting sick?
People need to take care of themselves to stay healthy.
Can you give us some tips?
First, get enough sleep at night.
Sleep helps your body to fight germs.
How much sleep?
Most adults need seven to nine hours.
Teenagers need eight to nine.
Most people don't sleep that much.
So they often get sick.
I take vitamin C every day.
That seems to help me.
Is that a good idea?
Yes, Susie.
But natural vitamin C is best for you.
Eat foods with vitamin C in them.
Right. And does chicken soup help fight a cold or the flu?
Yes, it does.
It helps you get over a cold faster.
So chicken soup is good for colds.
My mom was right!
Moms usually are!
In winter, people need to take care of themselves to avoid getting sick.
They need to get enough sleep.
Sleep helps the body fight germs.
Adults need seven to nine hours, and teenagers need eight or nine.
Taking vitamins seems to help people stay healthy, too.
But getting natural vitamins from healthy foods is best.
People should wash your hands often.
They should remind others to wash their hands, too.
Everyone stays healthier when the people around them are healthy!
Well friends, I hope you enjoyed our lessons this week.
So Chris, do you keep a calendar?
No, I don't.
I remember everything.
Parrots are smart birds.
Everything?
What important dates can you remember?
Oh, birthdays, holidays, vacation days.
Wow! I'm not that smart.
I need to check my calendar often.
Don't forget Chinese New Year is coming up.
That's right, February 10.
I was paying attention during the lesson.
Now let me ask you a question.
Why do Carol and Susie not want to go home and rest?
They really... they really should.
Well Chris, what's the answer?
They both said they were too busy.
Chris, what do you do when you have a cold?
Oh, I rest.
I hate having a sore throat.
I like to drink soup.
That helps my throat feel better.
I don't often get sick, though.
You want to know my secret?
That would be great.
What is your secret?
I eat lots of fruit.
Fruit has a lot of vitamins.
Chris, all you eat are fruit and nuts.
Everybody, please take care of your bodies.
Be well and stay rested.
We will come back later.
