Hi, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And this is LTE TV.
Today we continue talking about Health.
The title of our lesson is Staying Healthy.
And we all want to stay healthy.
So we'll learn some important things to help us stay healthy, and some important
things to help you learn and speak English.
Well Kevin, I see that you are staying healthy.
I sure am.
I love being healthy.
I do not like being sick.
Hello, everybody. My name is Kevin.
Now let's get started with our lesson with the Let's... Let's Begin reading.
People need to take care of themselves to avoid getting a cold or the flu.
People should get enough sleep.
Sleep helps the body fight germs.
Adults need at least seven hours, and teenagers need eight or nine.
Taking vitamins seems to help people stay well.
But natural vitamins in healthy foods are best.
Thank you, Kevin.
Now let's begin with Conversation A.
So, Nurse Nan, how can people avoid getting sick?
People need to take care of themselves to stay healthy.
Can you give us some tips?
First, get enough sleep at night.
Sleep helps your body to fight germs.
How much sleep?
Most adults need seven to nine hours.
Teenagers need eight to nine.
Most people don't sleep that much.
So they often get sick.
Susie is interviewing Nurse Nan.
And she is giving us some tips - tips to avoid getting sick.
Now we do not want to avoid talking about our key word.
The key word is: avoid.
Now when you avoid something, that means you stay away from it or you don't want
it.
We all want to avoid getting sick.
When you avoid getting sick, you don't get sick.
That's right.
There are some times when you want to avoid bad weather.
Sometimes a typhoon might be coming.
And so you might travel to another city to avoid the storm.
Right. Some people want to avoid certain foods.
If you're trying to stay healthy, you might want to avoid eating a lot of sugar.
Well, let's look at our next key word.
It is: take care of.
To avoid getting sick, you need to take care of your body.
When you take care of something, you do everything you can to make sure it's OK.
So we take care of our bodies.
We take care of people.
What else can you take care of, Kevin?
You can take care of your teeth by brushing it every day many times.
You can take care of your skin by putting on lotion or suntan lotion.
Right. So you take care of your skin.
You take care of your teeth.
You might also take care of an animal.
If you have a pet, you make sure your pet is OK by taking care of it.
Our last key word in Conversation A is: teenager.
Kevin, are... are you a teenager?
Oh, I am not a teenager anymore.
But you were once a teenager.
I definitely was.
Yes. So a teenager is a person who is not an adult and not a child.
We usually think of people between ages 13 and 19 as teenagers.
So many of you watching our show or listening to us might be teenagers.
Let's continue with Conversation B.
I take vitamin C every day.
That seems to help me.
Is that a good idea?
Yes, Susie.
But natural vitamin C is best for you.
Eat foods with vitamin C in them.
Right. And does chicken soup help fight a cold or the flu?
Yes, it does.
It helps you get over a cold faster.
So chicken soup is good for colds.
My mom was right!
Moms usually are!
Well, good moms usually are right.
Now we see Susie has been taking vitamin C every day.
And she says it seems to help her.
That brings us to our next key word.
And that is: seem.
seem.
When something seems like something, it means it... it looks like, or it is
like, or you're not sure.
So Andrea, it seems like your cardigan is... is orange?
Well.
I'm not sure. What color is it?
I know. It's kind of a hard color.
It could be orange; it could be pink.
But to me, it seems like it's orange.
Well, I think it looks like a salmon color or it almost looks like this
clipboard that I have.
We can also say, well, it seems like it's going to rain.
You think it might rain because of all the clouds that are here.
Well, Susie has been taking vitamin C.
But Nurse Nan wants her to take vitamin C of a different kind.
She wants her to take natural vitamin C... vitamins from natural food.
And that brings us to our next key word.
natural.
Now when we say something is natural, it means people have not made it or people
have not made it different, and it's natural.
Andrea, what is something that is natural?
Well, we talk about natural foods.
That's food that is the way it should be, the way it grows.
We often don't eat natural foods.
We eat foods that people have added things to or change things to.
So eating natural foods can help you stay healthy.
Well, one more example.
We can say we want to get some natural light.
Maybe you've been sitting in the school or the office too long, and you want to
go outside and get light from the sun.
So why don't we move on to our next section with the Read It?
In winter, people need to take care of themselves to avoid getting sick.
They need to get enough sleep.
Sleep helps the body fight germs.
Adults need seven to nine hours, and teenagers need eight or nine.
Taking vitamins seems to help people stay healthy, too.
But getting natural vitamins from healthy foods is best.
People should wash their hands often.
They should remind others to wash their hands, too.
Everyone stays healthier when the people around them are healthy!
We saw all of today's key words in our Read It.
And we reviewed some tips to help you avoid getting sick and take care of
yourself.
One tip is to get enough sleep.
Now Kevin, what does sleep help you with?
Well, sleep helps the body fight germs.
Oh. Yes, we want to fight germs.
Now germs are everywhere, right?
Yes, they are.
But you want to fight the bad germs so you don't get sick.
And how can you fight these germs?
Well, you can follow the tips that we talked about in our Read It:
Get enough sleep.
Take vitamins or try to get vitamins from natural foods.
What's another tip, Kevin?
Well, the other tip is to wash your hands of... often.
Now when to... when do I usually wash my hands?
I like to wash my hands after I play videogames with my friends because we touch
the same thing many times.
Yes. And our Read It even says that you can, or you should, remind others to
wash their hands, too.
When you remind someone to do something, you help them remember.
I always have to remind my son to wash his hands.
So it's OK to remind people to do something, especially if it will help them
stay healthy and avoid getting sick.
Well, we don't want to avoid reviewing our key words.
It's time to do that together.
Our first one is: avoid.
avoid.
Wash your hands often to avoid getting the flu.
take care of.
take care of.
Sam takes care of himself by eating healthy foods.
teenager.
Or you can just say [teen].
teenager or teen.
Those teenagers are all 16 years old.
seem.
seem.
What seems to be the problem?
natural.
natural.
Natural foods help keep you healthy.
Good job.
Now we'll be right back.
