Hello, everyone.
And this is Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we have a new week of learning, a new week of lessons just for you.
Today we are going to start the topic of LIFE.
The title of our lesson is Rob's Calendar.
And we are going to learn about time.
We're going to learn how to talk about months and dates and some special dates.
Well, I'd like you to welcome Kevin to the studio today.
Hey, friends, I'm glad to be here with you guys.
Now my name is Kevin.
And we are going to read the Let's Begin together.
So let's begin.
Rob is putting his friends' birthdays in his calendar.
Last year, he forgot their birthdays.
He can put the TV station's annual meeting in his calendar, too.
This is an important date.
The meeting is at the end of August or the beginning of September.
Thank you, Kevin.
And this will help you with today's lesson.
Now let's begin with Conversation A.
Hi, Ken! When is your birthday?
Is it in April?
No. My birthday is July 9.
Oh, OK.
Why are you asking about my birthday?
I am putting your birthday in my calendar.
Good. Then you can remember my birthday.
Did I forget your birthday last year?
Yes, you did.
I'm sorry.
No problem.
Well, Rob and Ken are talking about birthdays in Conversation A.
And Rob starts with a question.
He says, "When is your birthday?" He's asking Ken this question.
When is your birthday?
He's not sure, so he says, "Is it in April?" Is Ken's birthday in April?
No, it's not in April.
When is Ken's birthday?
Hey, Kevin, when is Ken's birthday?
Well, Ken's birthday is on July 9.
Andrea, when is your birthday?
My birthday is in March.
My birthday is March 5.
So when you want to know when somebody's birthday is, ask this question.
When is your birthday?
Now, Rob now knows when Ken's birthday is.
So he puts it in his calendar.
I guess that's a good way to remember your friend's birthday.
And a good way to talk about this key word is to learn it together.
Our key word is: calendar.
calendar.
Now a calendar is a place with months and dates on it.
There are many different kinds of calendars.
You might have a paper calendar that you hang on the wall, or a calendar that
looks like a small book.
You can also have a calendar on your computer.
Yeah, I have a calendar on my computer.
What is nice is that it saves space.
Now what kind of things do we put on calendars, Andrea?
Well, you can put birthdays on calendars and other special dates.
Rob didn't have Ken's birthday on his calendar last year.
But we will talk about this key word.
It is: last.
Now when you talk about last year, you are talking about the year before this
year.
So this year is 2013.
What was last year, Kevin?
Last year was 2012.
You've got it.
Now we have more to learn in Conversation B.
What other dates can I put in my calendar?
Doesn't your calendar already have dates?
Yes. It has months and days.
And it has most holidays.
But it doesn't have your friends' birthdays.
Right. And those dates are important, too.
They are.
What about the TV station's annual meeting?
Yes. I can put that in my calendar.
Well, we learn more about what we use a calendar for in Conversation B.
In Conversation B, there are certain things in a calendar, like days, months and
important holidays.
Well, that brings us to our next key word - that is: important.
important.
Now when we say "important," it's something you should not forget, or you should
hold dearly, OK?
Now what's important to you, Andrea?
What's important to me?
Well, my family is important to me.
My job is important to me.
And all of our students, all of our friends who learn with us every day are also
important to me.
Well, family is important to me as well.
There was another thing that was important to keep track of for Ken.
And that is his annual meeting.
When we say the word "annual," we mean it happens once every year.
What happens annually?
Such as... Well, the Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl happens once a year.
Well, that brings us to our next conversation in Conversation C.
Enjoy.
When is the annual meeting?
It's at the beginning of September.
Really? Last year, the meeting was at the end of August.
I can ask Carol about it.
How about Doughnut Day?
What?
Doughnut Day is on the first Friday in June.
Really? I love doughnuts.
Many stores give away doughnuts on Doughnut Day.
I'm putting that in my calendar!
The annual meeting is an important meeting.
It's an important date that we want to remember here at the studio.
It's an annual meeting.
So it only happens once a year.
And when is the annual meeting this year, Kevin?
Well, the annual meeting that happens once a year is in the beginning of
September.
Ah, the beginning of September.
That's important.
I need to remember that.
And we have another important key word to talk about.
It is: beginning.
beginning.
Now when something is at the beginning of another thing, it is at the start of
it.
So the beginning of September means the start of September.
That's right.
We use the word "beginning" in other ways, such as:
The beginning of the movie was my favorite part.
Or we could say:
The beginning of the meal was OK.
But it got a lot better.
At the beginning of our show, Kevin and I always share our names.
We tell you about some things we are going to learn at the beginning of our
show.
Well, "beginning" is one key word.
Another key word we want to talk about is: end.
Beginning or end.
Now the end of something is not the beginning.
No. No.
"End" is the opposite of beginning.
Yeah. So when we use the word "end," we can say: Well, the end of the book was
really bad.
I did not like how it ended.
We can say: My dad's birthday is at the end of October.
We always tell you to join us again at the end of our show.
And we've come to the end of Conversation C.
Now it's time for us to review our key words together.
The first one is: calendar.
calendar.
Look at the calendar.
What is today's date?
last.
last.
What did you do last week?
important.
important.
This meeting is important.
I can't miss it.
beginning.
beginning.
January 1 is the beginning of a new year.
Happy New Year!
end.
end.
Carl goes home at the end of the day.
Well, this is not the end of our show, friends.
We are just going to take a break.
Mmhm.
And then be sure to come back again.
We'll be back.
