Hi, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And thanks for joining us here on LTE TV.
Now today we are going to talk about technology.
Yes, technology.
Now that is a big word.
But we are going to learn how to talk about how things work.
And the title of our lesson is: How Does It Work?
How Does It Work?
Well, we have another teacher here to help us with today's lesson.
Welcome, Kevin.
Hello, Andrea. Hello, friends.
Let's get started with learning English.
My name is Kevin.
Let's do our Let's Begin reading.
Are you ready?
Let's begin.
Rob got an MP3 player for Christmas.
He tells Carol about it.
The MP3 player is small, but it holds a lot of songs.
It has a nice color screen, too.
How does the player work?
Rob just touches the screen to choose a song or make a playlist.
Great job! Thank you, Kevin.
Now let's start with Conversation A.
Hi, Rob! What's that?
Did you get a new gadget?
Oh, hi, Carol!
Yes, this is my new MP3 player.
I got it for Christmas from my favorite aunt!
That's a nice gift! It's very small.
Yes, it is. I really like the size.
But it probably doesn't hold many songs.
Yes, it does!
It can hold about 2,000 songs!
Really? Wow!
Well, Rob shows Carol his new gadget.
At the beginning of our conversation, Carol says, "Hi, Rob! What's that?" What's
that?
Now when you want to know what something is, you can ask this simple question.
What's that?
Hey, Kevin. What's that?
What's that in your hands?
Oh, this?
This is a red clipboard.
We use it to hold our teaching notes.
Andrea, what's that... what's that hanging off your ear?
Oh. Well Kevin, this is my earring.
I have two earrings.
Now this is actually a great phrase to use when you want to practice English.
You can just keep asking the question.
What's that?
What's that?
It's a train.
What's that?
It's a bus.
What's that?
It's my Let's Talk in English magazine.
player.
What's that?
Well, that's our key word.
So let's talk about it together.
player.
Rob tells us that he has a new MP3 player.
Now a player plays something.
So what does an MP3 player play?
Uh, I know this one. MP3s.
What does a DVD player play?
I know that.
A DVD player plays DVDs.
So what does a CD player play?
I think we get the idea of how this works.
A CD player plays CDs.
Good job.
Well, we also learned more about Rob's MP3 player.
It can hold about 2,000 songs!
Well, let's talk about this key word.
hold.
When we talk about how much a player holds or how much something holds, it's how
many things you can put on it.
So how many songs does the player hold?
How many songs can you keep on the player?
We can say: How much can my pockets hold?
How much can I put in my pockets?
You can say: How much does your computer hold?
What can you put in your computer?
You know, files, not sand or rocks.
Exactly. You can say: My phone can hold over 1,000 pictures.
Or my phone can hold over 1,000 phone numbers.
Well, we can keep learning with Conversation B.
I like the small size of this player.
I can use it when I exercise.
Yes, the size is perfect for exercising!
I love to listen to music when I'm at the gym.
I like the color screen on your MP3 player.
Me, too! The screen is small, but it is so clear and bright.
So how does the player work?
Well, in Conversation B, Rob and Carol are still talking about the MP3 player.
We learned that the MP3 player is small and is perfect for exercising.
When we say "perfect for," it means it's really, really, really good for; like,
well, Andrea, your... your shoes look perfect for dancing.
Actually, Kevin, you're right.
These shoes are perfect for dancing.
Right. We can also say a van is perfect for moving big things.
You can say the weather outside is perfect for a picnic.
Thanks, Andrea.
Now we learned another thing about the MP3 player.
And it has a color screen.
Now that brings us to our next key word.
That key word is "screen." Now what's... What is a screen?
A screen is a part of a machine where you can see videos or the part we look
into.
So you can have a...
Well, you're watching our show through a television screen.
Andrea, what else has a screen?
Well, many people have phones with screens.
When the phone rings, you might see the name of the person who's calling you on
that screen.
A computer screen.
Or if you go to a movie theater, you watch a movie on a very big screen.
A very, very big screen.
Now this MP3 player... it's pretty cool.
So Carol wants to learn more.
And she asks, "How does it work?" And that brings us to our next key word.
work.
When we say "work"... When Carol is asking it in a question, she asks how does
it do what it is supposed to do.
So how does the MP3 player play MP3s?
So we will find out in our next conversation with Conversation C.
You just touch the screen to use it.
Like a tablet computer?
You just touch the screen to choose a song?
That's right.
I can make my own playlists, too.
So you can choose the best music to exercise to.
Right. I need fast songs when I exercise.
I can also listen to the radio with this MP3 player.
Really? What a great gadget!
What a great gadget!
What a great gadget!
This is what Carol says about Rob's new MP3 player.
She really likes it.
What a great...
Now if you really like something, you can use this phrase.
What a great show!
What a great movie!
What a great lunch!
Or I can say: What a great color!
Andrea, that cardigan is a really nice shade of uh, peach pink.
It's really interesting.
What a great color!
Well, thank you, Kevin.
That's very nice of you to say.
What a great...
Well, what a great key word we have for you in Conversations C.
The key word is: choose.
choose.
You just touch the screen to choose a song.
Now when you choose something, you make a choice.
Maybe you can choose from many things, but you pick one.
You choose one.
And we all choose many things every day, don't we, Kevin?
We sure do.
Such as yesterday I chose, (past tense,) I chose to eat noodles.
Now "chose" is the past tense, and it's spelled C-H-O-S-E.
Good. Now we hope that you choose to practice your key words with us.
Let's review them together.
The first one is: player.
player.
I don't have a CD player, but I do have an MP3 player.
hold.
hold.
How many pictures can your computer hold?
screen.
screen.
I look at the computer screen when I type.
work.
work.
How does this phone work?
I need to call someone.
choose.
choose.
There are three kinds of cookies here.
Choose one.
Well, we hope that you all choose to join us again after our break.
We'll see you then.
