Hi, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And I'm so glad you joined us for a new year of learning together.
Today we are going to talk about small talk.
The title of our lesson is: Who Are the New People?
Yes, we have new people for you to meet right here at the studio.
We also have a new teacher this year.
I'd like you to meet Kevin.
Hello, everybody.
My name is Kevin.
I'm very happy to be teaching with Andrea and helping you learn some English.
Let's start with the Let's Begin.
Susie tells Ken about some new people in the office.
Megan works with Carol.
She is Carol's secretary.
She is nice.
But she is a little shy.
There is also a new guy in the office.
He is a salesman.
His name is Joe.
Thank you, Kevin.
And we hope that our Let's Begin will help you get ready for our lesson today.
Now let's begin with Conversation A.
Hi, Ken! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Susie!
There is a new girl in the office.
Did you meet her?
No. Tell me about her.
What is her name?
Her name is Megan Davis.
She is from Florida.
What is her job?
She works with Carol.
Megan is her new secretary.
Carol is busy.
She needs a good secretary.
Ken and Susie are talking about the new girl at the office.
Now Kevin, what is the new girl's name?
Her name is Megan.
Yes, that's right.
And we learned a little bit more about her.
Well, Susie starts our conversation by saying "Happy New Year!" Hi, Ken! Happy
New Year!
And yes, today is January 1.
It's nice to say Happy New Year.
Hey, Kevin! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Andrea.
How was your New Year's celebration?
I had a nice New Year's celebration.
That's good.
I'm excited about this new year.
So be sure to say "Happy New Year" to someone today.
Of course, we usually say "Happy New Year" for the first few weeks in a new
year.
So it's New Year.
And we met a new girl here at the office.
Her name is Megan.
And she works with Carol.
Well, we see a key word here.
It is "work." Now when you work, you are doing your job.
I work here on LTE TV.
And this year, I get to work with Kevin!
I'm very happy to work with you, Andrea.
I can't wait to work with you some more.
Well, I'm glad we are working together.
Well, the new girl Megan works with Carol.
She is Carol's new secretary.
That is her job.
She works with Carol.
Her job is a secretary.
Now Kevin, what does a secretary do?
Well, what a secretary does is that person helps someone in their work.
So a secretary can make phone calls, can write e-mails, can plan days to do
stuff.
OK. Good. So a secretary helps someone.
And we know that Carol is very busy.
She needs a lot of help.
We find out a little more about Megan.
Ken says, "Tell me about her." When you want to know more about something or
someone, you can say: Tell me about her.
Tell me about him.
Tell me about your class.
Or, tell me about the show.
Well, we have more to learn together now in Conversation B.
Megan is nice.
But she is a little shy.
So she is not like me.
No. She doesn't talk all the time!
Hey! I don't talk all the time.
No. But you do talk a lot!
I know. When can I meet Megan?
Maybe you can meet her at lunch.
She's busy now.
She must be hard-working.
Well, we just learned some more about our new friend Megan.
In the first conversation, we learned that she is from Florida.
And now we learned something new, which brings us to our first key word.
We learned that Megan is a little shy.
shy.
Now when you are shy, it means you're a little afraid to talk to new people.
Andrea, you're not very shy, are you?
Well, I'm usually not very shy.
But sometimes I can be shy.
Sometimes when I meet new people, I might not know what to say to them.
And I can be a little shy.
I can be quiet at first.
It's OK to be shy.
But we can use this word to talk about someone who maybe doesn't talk all the
time or doesn't like to talk a lot.
We also learned that Susie says that Ken is not very shy.
In fact, she says he talks all the time.
Now we have this phrase "all the time." It means you do something a lot.
I can say: I look at Facebook all the time.
Andrea, can you use "all the time" in a sentence?
Sure.
We can say: Gabe watches movies all the time.
That just means that he watches a lot of movies, or he enjoys movies.
Can you think of another sentence?
Some students study English all the time.
Those are some great examples, Andrea.
Ken responds by saying "Hey! I don't talk all the time." And that brings us to
next key word.
hey.
hey.
"Hey" is something you use to make someone listen to you or to look at you.
Hey, Andrea, can you use "hey" in a sentence?
Sure, I can.
You can say: Hey! Wait for me! I will be there in a minute.
Or: Hey, do you know the time?
Or: Hey, that's my book. Don't take it.
We can also say: Hey, I heard that song before.
Or: Hey, that jacket looks just like yours.
So that's how you use "hey." Now finally, we learned that Megan is hard-working.
When you're hard-working, it means you work very hard and you work well.
So now let's move on to our next conversation - Conversation C.
We have a new guy here, too.
We do?
Why don't I see these new people?
They just started today.
You will meet them soon.
What is the guy's name?
His name is Joe Taylor.
What is his job?
He's an ad salesman.
He talks to people about ads on our programs.
So he talks a lot!
We have a new girl here at the office.
And in Conversation C, we find out that we also have a new guy.
Hey, Kevin, what is the new guy's name?
Well, his name is Joe Taylor.
Joe is his first name.
Taylor is his last name.
Why do I need to pay attention to his first and last name?
That's because "Taylor" can be used as a first name as well.
Andrea, is there someone we know that has a first name Taylor?
Oh, yes! There's a famous singer - Taylor Swift.
We talked about her last year on our show.
So Taylor can be a first name, like Taylor Smith.
Or it can be a last name or second name, like Joe Taylor.
Now in English, sometimes a name can be a first name or a second name or a last
name or both.
So that's just something to remember.
Well, we want to talk about our key word here.
There's a new guy at the office.
And "guy" is our key word.
guy.
Now you use the word "guy" to talk about a boy or a man.
I'm teaching with this guy here.
This guy's name is Kevin.
Yes, my name is Kevin.
And I am definitely a guy.
Just in case you were a little confused, I'm definitely a guy.
And Kevin, you are a nice guy.
Thanks.
Well, the new guy at the office is Joe Taylor.
And what is his job?
Well, we find out that he is an ad salesman.
That's his job. He's a salesman.
Let's talk about that key word together.
salesman.
Now a salesman's job is to sell things.
Salesmen often talk a lot because they want to tell people about the things they
are selling, so people will buy what they sell.
Hey, Kevin, if you want to buy a new car, what kind of salesman should you talk
to?
You should find a car salesman.
Andrea, what if you want to buy insurance?
Well, then you should talk to an insurance salesman.
Now what kind of salesman is Joe?
He's an ad salesman.
An ad is something that tells you about something you can buy.
We have ads here on our show.
Or you might see ads in a magazine.
That's right, Andrea. We do have a lot of ads, interesting ads, in our magazine.
Now let's finish off by reviewing our key words.
Let's start with: work.
work.
My mother works in a restaurant.
shy.
shy.
Elle is shy.
She doesn't talk to new people very much.
hey.
hey.
Hey! That's my cookie.
Don't eat it!
guy.
guy.
There are four guys on the team.
salesman.
salesman.
I can buy books from that salesman.
Great job, everyone.
Now it's time for us to take a break.
