Lights.

Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everybody, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
Hi, everyone.
We're very glad you have joined us for today's very important lesson about
burns.
Well, Rob's Burn.
You see, we have learned about headaches this week, and stomachaches.
And there's another kind of pain that you might experience.
And that is a burn.
When you touch something hot, you experience pain.
It might be a burn.
Well, pain, burn, these are some of today's key words.
We're going to learn about them and more.
Right now open up your magazine, and let's begin with Conversation A.
What's the matter, Rob?
I just burned my hand.
How did you burn it?
I was trying to put away an iron.
I didn't know it was still hot!
Burns really hurt.
Let me see your hand.
It's just a minor burn, but we should still treat it.
Oh, I'll be OK.
First, put your hand in some cool water.
I'll be right back.
Well, while Rob is putting his hand in cool water, we need to talk about these
key words.
The first one is: iron.
Rob was ironing his clothes.
And he was using an iron.
Now an iron becomes very hot.
And so you can put it on your clothes.
It makes your clothes look nicer when you use an iron.
Yes, an iron.
Now irons are good to use.
They do make your clothes look nice.
But you have to be careful.
Irons get very, very hot.
So when you are finished using your iron, make sure you turn it off and put it
in a safe place.
Well, we know that something happened and Rob burned himself.
He burned himself.
He has a burn.
Friends, "burn" is our key word.
We know that this is a noun and a verb.
Rob burned himself on the iron.
He has a burn.
That means part of his skin got so hot, now it's really painful.
He has a burn.
So you can get a burn from an iron.
Sometimes I get small burns when I am cooking.
Have you also heard of a sunburn?
Maybe you've had a sunburn.
This is when you are out in the sun too long, and the sun burns your skin.
A sunburn.
Andrea, I have heard of a sunburn.
I get sunburns all the time when I go out to the beach.
Oh, I'm sorry.
So your skin gets very red and it hurts?
Yes. Actually, I have a sunburn right now.
My skin hurts and sometimes it even itches.
I don't like sunburns.
But I do like our next key word.
It is: minor.
My sunburn is actually a minor burn.
It's not very big.
"Minor" means little.
Right, a minor burn.
The burn is not very big.
It's a little burn.
Now what are some other ways that we can use this key word?
Well, if you have a problem that's not very big, you can just say, "I have a
minor problem." I'm trying to work on my minor problem.
A minor problem.
Or maybe you cut yourself, but it's not very big.
It's a minor cut.
Well friends, let's continue with Conversation B.
Do you have any butter?
No. I have a first-aid kit.
I'm going to put a bandage on your burn.
My friend puts butter on her burns.
Butter keeps the heat inside.
Cool water cools the burn, which will help the pain.
Then shouldn't I put ice on it?
Wouldn't that be better?
No, ice can cool your skin too much and damage it.
Do you want some pain medicine?
No, I'm fine. Thanks, Susie.
Well, Susie has a first-aid kit.
And I have a first-aid kit right here.
You can see it has a red cross on it.
Many first-aid kits do.
And inside is medicine and other things that will help you feel better if you
have pain.
Well, Susie has a first-aid kit.
And she's going to put a bandage on Rob's burn.
Now we learned more about what you should do for a burn in Conversation B.
Should you put butter on a burn, Gabe?
No, do not put butter on a burn.
Butter keeps the heat inside.
Right. We learned that cool water cools the burn.
And it's the best thing that you can do for a burn.
Just put cool water on the burn.
And our key word is: cool.
Cool water cools the burn.
So if something cools something else, that means it makes it cooler.
The temperature is not very hot.
It is cold.
It cools something.
Yes. An air conditioner cools a room.
When it's very hot, turn on the air conditioner.
And it will cool a room.
Well, we know that cool water cools the burn.
So it should help with the pain.
"Pain" is also a key word.
When you have pain, that means part of your body hurts.
When you get a burn, you often have pain.
Do you have pain right now anywhere?
I hope not.
If you do, you can say, "I'm in pain." Something hurts. I'm in pain.
Well, we are not in pain.
No.
No. But we want to learn more with our Read It.
If you have a first-aid kit, you can treat minor problems.
People touch hot things like stoves or irons and burn themselves.
Here's how to treat a burn:
1. Put cool water on the burn.
This cools the burn and helps the pain.
Don't use ice!
It can cool the skin too much and damage it.
2. Put a bandage on the burn to protect the skin.
3. Take pain medicine if the burn hurts a lot.
Well, I like this Read It paragraph.
We learned how to treat burns.
Do you know how to treat burns?
Well, now you do.
You just listened to three very good tips.
Now if you treat something, that means you make it better.
You can treat a burn.
Yes, a doctor treats a patient.
How do you treat a headache?
Well, some people take medicine to treat a headache.
Or they treat a headache by taking a rest.
So you can treat things in different ways.
I like to treat headaches by sleeping.
But sometimes I start to sleep, and then I get a headache.
It's not always easy to know how to treat your pain.
Well, here we see three points.
Well, friends, if you are giving some tips, sometimes you will use numbers.
You will say things like:
First, you do this.
And second, you do this.
So one, two, three.
First, second, third.
And when treating a burn, first, put cool water on the burn.
Second, put a bandage on the burn to protect the skin.
And third, take pain medicine if the burn hurts a lot.
Friends, you're doing a good job.
Right now let's go see Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Mmm, I have a hot cup of coffee.
Oh, no. Don't burn yourself.
Don't worry. It's just coffee.
Hot coffee can be dangerous.
Dangerous coffee? That's funny.
Be careful!
Ow! Ow!
What's wrong?
I just burned my mouth.
See? I told you.
Oh, it really hurts!
Use cool water.
It will help the pain.
Cool water? Good idea.
Then put a bandage on it.
Put a bandage on my mouth?
Yeah. Just wrap it around your whole face.
And... and that will make me feel better?
No. But it will make you look better.
Very funny, Ginger.
Hey, hey, hey.
Now let's review those key words.
The first one is: iron.
iron.
Use the iron on your clothes.
Then they will look better.
burn.
burn.
Tony touched the fire and now he has a burn on his hand.
Ooh.
minor.
minor.
This is only a minor problem.
I don't really need help.
cool.
cool.
Our new air conditioner cools the room much faster than our old one.
pain.
pain.
Grandpa has a lot of pain in his back.
So he moves slowly.
Well friends, I hope you are not experiencing any pain right now.
We're going to take a break.
And we will see yousoon.
