Let's Talk in English.
Hey, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
Well, we have been talking about being healthy, eating right and even being on a
diet.
Today's lesson is called Give Us Some Diet Tips!
So we are going to give you some tips in Today's lesson.
Now a tip can help you with something.
Well, we hope that this lesson helps you learn some new key words and phrases
that you can use every day.
Let's begin with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Welcome to Let's Talk.
Are you good at managing your weight?
Well, our guest for today is here to tell us all about that.
Let's welcome him.
Welcome, Dr. Health.
Today we're talking about diets for overweight people.
What can you tell us?
First, drink lots of water.
Sometimes people think they are hungry when they are really thirsty.
So reach for a glass of water before you reach for a snack.
Right.
Also, eat protein like meat, eggs or tofu at every meal.
Protein helps you feel full longer.
That's good to know.
That's good to know.
Yes.
We are learning some good things from Dr. Health.
Gabe, did you learn something new from Dr. Health?
Well, yes, I did, Andrea.
I did not know that sometimes people think they are hungry when really they are
actually just thirsty.
That's important for me to remember.
Well, I'm glad you learned something new.
It is important to remember.
Well, Dr. Health gives us some good tips.
It's good to learn these things because there are a lot of overweight people in
the world.
Let's look at our key word.
overweight.
Now if a person is overweight, that means they have too much weight.
Their weight is over what it should be.
They're overweight.
Well, you can talk about people as being overweight.
Or maybe you are going on a trip and you pack your bags.
You take them to the airport and then the person there tells you:
I'm sorry, your bag is overweight.
You need to take some things out.
That way it can be the right weight.
Well, since we are talking about people, if you are not eating enough and you
don't weight enough, you might be called underweight.
You can be overweight or underweight.
Well, Dr. Health also gives us some other tips.
He says that it's important to eat protein.
He says, "Eat protein like meat, eggs and tofu." Tofu is a kind of protein, and
it's a key word.
Tofu is made out of beans and then cooked in many different ways.
Tofu is very common in Asian dishes.
Oh, I love all kinds of tofu.
Sometimes even (Chinese).
Yes, this word comes from the Chinese word, (Chinese).
But if you go to an English-speaking country, you need to learn how to say it
like English speakers do.
Tofu.
It doesn't sound as nice, I know.
But some people might not understand you if you just say it in Chinese.
Well, friends, it's time for us to continue with Conversation B.
(Music).
You should also eat meals often.
People who eat four or five times a day manage their weight better.
So divide your daily calories between four or five small meals.
Right.
And dinner should be the last time you eat.
But I like a bedtime snack.
Then eat one that's 100 calories or less.
And eat it slowly.
Then you will feel more satisfied.
Well, Dr. Health has some good advice.
You should also eat meals often.
Rob says, "So divide your daily calories between four or five meals." We see two
key words here.
divide.
When you divide something, that means you put many things into different parts.
You see this word when you are doing math.
Andrea, I think you're pretty good at math.
What is 100 divided by 10?
100.
Yeah, divided by 10.
Divided by 10 is 10.
That's right.
100 divided by 10 is 10.
So you can divide numbers and you can divide meals.
Yes.
When you divide a meal, you share it with others.
You can also divide a cake.
Maybe you bring a cake to a party.
You can divide the cake into ten pieces.
That way, everyone has a piece of the cake when you divide it.
Well, Rob says, "Divide your daily calories." "Daily" is another key word here.
If you do something daily, well, this means that it is something that you do
every day.
So "daily" can describe something that you eat every day or that you do every
day.
Do you have a daily schedule?
Do you write down what you do every day?
Maybe you have some daily habits - things that you do every day.
Well, when we talk about daily calories, we talk about how many calories you eat
every day.
Now most people eat about 2000 or 2500 calories a day.
So you want to divide those between meals - three meals or even four or five
meals.
You don't want to eat all your calories in just one or two meals.
And Dr. Health says that if you have a bedtime snack, make sure it's 100
calories or less.
Eat it slowly.
Then you will feel more satisfied.
"Satisfied" is our key word.
If you are satisfied, you are happy with what you have.
And when you're satisfied after a meal, the meal was good and you are not hungry
anymore.
Now let's keep learning with our Read It!
(Music).
If you are overweight, what can you do?
First, when you feel hungry, you may be thirsty.
Reach for a glass of water before you reach for a snack.
Second, eat four of five small meals a day.
Divide your daily calories between them.
Eat protein like meat, eggs or tofu at each meal.
If you must have a bedtime snack, eat a small one.
And eat it slowly so you will feel more satisfied.
We see this sentence in our Read It!
If you must have a bedtime snack, eat a small one.
If you must have something, or if you must do something, that means you need to
do it.
Well, let's try to use this sentence in some other ways.
If you must be late, call your friend.
Ooh. If you must borrow my bike, make sure to return it later today.
If you must miss class, make sure you get the work you missed.
And as we see here, if you must have a bedtime snack, eat a small one.
Don't eat a lot.
Yes.
Eat one that is 100 calories or less.
Well, we must keep learning.
Let's review with Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Oh, oh, oh. I'm hungry.
Oh, Ginger, here.
Have a glass of water.
I'm not thirsty.
I'm hungry.
Have a glass of water.
Didn't you hear me?
I'm hungry.
I know you're hungry, Ginger.
Drinking water helps.
But I don't want water. I want a snack.
Oh, OK.
Well, you could have protein.
Huh?
Do you want meat, eggs or tofu?
I like bananas better.
Eat slowly and eat often.
Monkeys don't eat like that.
You should.
You'll feel satisfied longer.
OK.
I'm really hungry now.
I want a big banana.
Well, Ginger, here, have a big glass of water instead.
(Music).
