Lights.

Let's Talk in English.
Hey, everybody, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
Now I have a question for you.
The question is "What do you eat?" Yes. What do you eat?
Well, that question is also the title of today's lesson.
When you have a meal, what do you eat?
Do you think of an idea of what you want to eat before you have your meal?
Well, we'll learn many key words today to help us talk about things that we eat.
Now I have another good idea.
I would like you to open your Let's Talk in English magazine; go to today's
lesson.
We have a few key words for you to learn today.
Do you see them? Yes?
OK. Well, you'll hear some of them in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Lily.
How was your salad?
Delicious!
I love salad.
I eat it a lot.
I know.
You eat a lot of healthy food.
I like healthy food.
Can you give me some ideas for healthy meals?
Sure!
Then you can eat lots of healthy food, too.
The ideas aren't for me.
They are for my niece.
Susie asks "Can you give me some ideas for healthy meals?" Can you give me some
ideas for healthy meals?
Well, we see both of our key words in this question.
I have an idea.
Why don't we look at the first one together?
Gabe, do you think that's a good idea?
Andrea, I think that's a great idea.
How about you talk about the word: idea?
Good idea!
Our key word is idea.
Now when you have an idea, you have something that you're thinking about and you
want to share it.
Oh, I have an idea.
Now you might ask people for ideas.
You might say, "I want to take a trip somewhere.
Do you have any ideas about where I can take a trip?".
I need to get some new clothes, but I want a different style.
Do you have any ideas?
What ideas do you have?
You could say, "Great idea! I like that idea. Let's do it.".
Yes.
Now we all have ideas for different things.
Your teacher might ask you for ideas for a project.
Maybe you think of an idea for a birthday party.
It's good to share some of your ideas.
Share an idea that you have today in English.
Well, I have another idea.
I think it's important for us to look at the next key word.
Well, that's a great idea.
It's also important for us to eat.
It's important to have meals every day.
And "meal" is our key word.
Now most people eat three meals a day.
Gabe, what are the three meals?
Well, the three meals are breakfast, lunch and a Happy Meal.
Oh.
I like Happy Meals.
Many fast food restaurants have Happy Meals, and with the meal you get a cool
toy.
I see.
But Gabe, no.
You're right with the first two.
Breakfast is a meal.
Yeah.
Lunch is a meal.
Yeah.
But what's the last meal of the day?
Well, dinner.
Dinner is the last meal.
That's when I get a Happy Meal.
OK. I'm glad that makes you happy.
Well, some people eat many smaller meals during the day.
It's up to you.
But try to eat healthy meals.
And we can learn more now with Conversation B.
(Music).
Why does your niece need ideas?
She doesn't eat healthy food.
I worry about her.
What does she eat?
She eats candy.
She eats cookies.
She eats fast food.
Those things aren't healthy.
I know.
And she knows that, too.
She can eat healthy snacks.
Both fresh fruit and dried fruit are healthy.
Well, why does Susie's niece need ideas?
Because she doesn't eat healthy food.
Susie says, "I worry about her." I worry about someone.
Or I worry about that person or that thing.
He doesn't get enough sleep.
I worry about him.
The sky looks really gray right now.
I worry about the weather.
A storm might be coming.
I worry about the weather.
I worry about him.
And Susie says, "I worry about her." She worries about her niece.
She wants her niece to be healthy.
Of course, we want everyone to be healthy.
Well, friends, if you eat a lot of candy, that's not very good.
That's not very healthy.
Candy is our key word.
Candy does taste good.
Candy is a night snack sometimes.
It usually is very sweet.
There are many different kinds of candy.
What candies do you like?
Ooh, one of my favorite kinds of candy is chocolate, especially very dark
chocolate.
There are different kinds of candy, and it's OK to eat a little bit of candy
once in a while.
You just don't want to eat a lot of candy.
That's right.
Well, I really like cotton candy.
It's candy that looks like a big cotton ball and it's really soft and sweet.
But of course I shouldn't eat too much cotton candy.
Well, friends, we see something else here.
Lily suggests a healthy snack like fresh fruit or dried fruit.
It's good to eat fruit.
And sometimes fruit can be dried.
It becomes a little harder, but it still tastes pretty good.
Right. When fruit is dried, all the water is taken out, but you still have all
the good things, all the healthy things that the fruit has in it.
Well, let's continue now with Conversation C.
(Music).
She only likes a few kinds of fruit.
What does she like?
She likes strawberries, oranges and grapes.
Then she can eat those for snacks.
Maybe she can.
Why doesn't she eat healthy food?
She is too busy.
She doesn't have time for meals.
She eats on the run.
She must often be tired.
She is!
So why doesn't Susie's niece eat healthy food?
Well, we find out that she is too busy.
She doesn't have time for meals.
She eats on the run.
Now what does it mean to eat on the run?
Well, that means you eat very quickly while you're doing something else.
So if you eat your breakfast while you're driving to work, then you are eating
on the run.
You're eating on the run.
Do you ever eat on the run?
It's not good to eat on the run all the time.
But sometimes you are just too busy.
I'm sorry, I need to eat on the run today.
I can't stay for a meal with you.
Yes. Now I guess it's OK sometimes, but you want to try to stop and enjoy your
meals.
Well, we learn a bit more about Susie's niece.
We find out that she only likes a few kinds of fruit.
Let's look at these words: a few.
Now if you only like a few kinds of fruits, that means you might like two or
three kinds of fruits, but not many.
A few usually refers to two, three, four things.
That's right.
Not very many things.
A few.
She likes a few kinds of fruit.
How else can you use this key word or these words?
I need to make a few phone calls this afternoon.
Not many phone calls.
Just a few phone calls.
Our next key word is a fruit.
A strawberry.
A strawberry is a small, red fruit.
A strawberry kind of looks like a small heart.
Strawberries are sweet and delicious.
Oh, I love strawberries.
I love strawberry ice cream.
I love strawberry cheesecake.
I love eating strawberries.
Strawberries are delicious.
Ooh, I also really like strawberry milkshakes.
I can get those at fast food restaurants with my Happy Meal.
OK. Good idea, Gabe.
It's also a good idea to review with Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Please pass a banana.
You know, Ginger, I worry about you.
Why?
Well, you always eat bananas.
Monkeys love bananas.
I know. But you eat them all the time.
Bananas are so delicious.
But I think you eat too many of them.
It's OK.
Bananas are a healthy food.
Yes, but you need to eat other things, too.
Ooh. Like what?
Well, you could eat, uh, fruit, like strawberries, oranges and grapes.
Oh. Can I still have bananas?
Ginger, I worry about you.
I have an idea.
Let's practice our key words together.
Now that's a good idea.
And our first one is...
idea.
idea.
What can I do tonight?
Can you give me some ideas?
meal.
meal.
Breakfast is Tammy's favorite meal.
candy.
candy.
Candy is really sweet.
a few.
a few.
Give Sam a few cookies.
He doesn't need very many.
strawberry.
strawberry.
Gina eats strawberries and other fruit.
Mmm. I like strawberries.
And I enjoy taking breaks, so let's do that right now.
