Let's Talk in English.
Hey, everybody, and welcome to Let's Talk in English right here on LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
And we are so glad you are here with us for a new week of learning together.
The title of our lesson today is "A Bad Day?" Well, sometimes I think we all
have bad days.
Do you ever have days with a lot of problems?
Well, today we're going to learn how to talk about bad things that can happen.
You'll learn how to share or tell a story.
Well, it's going to be a good day right here on LTE TV.
We are going to learn many things.
Good things will happen.
And you'll remember many things that you can use.
So let's hurry and get started.
(Music).
Amber! Hi!
Can I borrow your cellphone?
Did you forget your cellphone today?
Yes.
What happened to you shirt?
I spilled coffee on it.
Uh-oh!
Are you having a bad day?
Yes! And I need to hurry.
Can I use your phone?
Oh, sorry. Sure.
Here's my phone.
Oh, no! Poor Ken!
He spilled coffee on his shirt.
Well, he starts our conversation by saying "Amber! Hi! Can I borrow your
cellphone?" He needs a cellphone to use.
So you can ask someone, "Can I borrow your cellphone?" or you can say, "Can I
use your phone?" We see both of these questions in our conversation.
That's right.
Can I borrow something?
Or can I use something?
Can I borrow your car tonight?
Can I use your car tonight?
Can I borrow that pen?
Can I use that pen?
OK. Well, actually, Gabe, can I borrow your pen?
Can I use your pen?
I... I forgot mine.
Um, Andrea, I'm sorry, you cannot borrow my pen.
You cannot use my pen.
Do you know why?
Why?
Because I forgot mine too.
I'm sorry.
OK.
Well, we can look at our key words together.
The first one in this conversation is happen.
Amber says, "What happened to your shirt?" Now she saw that something was wrong
with Ken's shirt, and she wanted to know why.
She wanted to know what happened.
What happened to your shirt?
How else can you use this key word: happen?
Well, you could ask your friend:
What happened to you?
You look terrible.
What happened to you?
Well, what happens in life?
Many different things happen.
You do not know what will happen every day.
So when it happens, what will you do?
Will you be happy?
Will you be sad?
What is happening in your life today?
OK. Well, what is happening here right now?
We have another key word to talk about.
Our next key word is hurry.
Ken says he needs to hurry.
Now when you hurry, you go somewhere fast or quickly.
Maybe you're going to meet a friend at eight o'clock.
But it will be eight o'clock in five minutes.
So you need to hurry to meet your friend so you're not late.
We are going to be late.
Hurry up!
You can use the word "hurry" with "up." Hurry up! Come on! Let's go!
We are late. Hurry up!
Well, let's hurry up and go on to Conversation B.
(Music).
"Hi, Rob.
This is Ken.
I really need my other car key.
I'm at the office.
It's 5:30.
Thanks. Bye.".
Rob is probably driving home now.
You're right.
Did you lose your car key?
No. It's in my car.
So go get it.
I can't.
I locked my car!
It was an accident!
Oh, Ken.
Oh, Ken.
Well, what happened to Ken today?
Well, a lot happened to Ken.
He forgot his cellphone.
He spilled coffee on his shirt.
And he locked his keys in his car.
Oh, Ken.
Our dear friend, Ken.
Well, if something bad happens to your friend, you can say this too.
Oh...
Oh, friend.
Oh, you.
Oh, Ken.
Something bad happened to him.
Well, do you ever do what he did?
Do you ever lock your keys in your car on accident?
Friends, lock is our key word.
Now if you lock something, like you lock a door, that means the door is closed
and you cannot open it unless you have the right key.
Yes. So you can lock a door.
You can also lock other things.
You can lock your bike.
If you are driving or riding your bike outside, and you go into a store, it's a
good idea to lock your bike up so no one can take it.
When you lock it, no one should be able to take it.
And of course, many people like to lock their doors at night.
Sometimes you might lock your windows.
Some windows have locks.
Or what else can you lock?
If you close the shop at the end of the day, then we say you are locking up the
shop.
That way, nobody can get in.
You can also lock your computer.
When you lock your computer, no one else can use it.
I also often lock my cellphone so no one can use it that's not me.
Oh, good.
So you can lock things even without a key.
If you are using your cellphone or computer, when you lock it, that just means
no one else has the password to use it.
You can lock something.
Well, friends, right now it's time for us to continue with Conversation C.
(Music).
I'm meeting my girlfriend's parents for the first time tonight.
That's great!
So after work, I got in my car.
But then I spilled coffee on my shirt!
Oh, no!
Then I remembered something.
Rob has a shirt in his office.
I can borrow it.
He does!
And there is a car key in his top drawer.
Really?
Maybe it's mine!
Thanks, Amber.
Oh, Ken. All of these bad things are happening to him the day he is supposed to
meet his girlfriend's parents for the first time.
I know, Andrea.
I think he is already a little nervous about meeting them for the first time.
And then all of these bad things happen.
He's probably even more nervous.
Yes. But hopefully everything will be OK.
He remembered that Rob had another shirt.
And maybe the car key he has is for his car.
Right. Well, it might be in his top drawer.
It could be in his top drawer.
Well, we want to remember to look at our key words today.
And our first one is remember.
Now when you remember something, you think about it and you know it.
Ah, yes! I remember your name now.
Your name is Sam.
Oh, man.
I do have a problem remembering names.
I meet so many people and I want to remember everyone's name.
But sometimes I forget.
So I'm sorry if I don't remember your name sometimes.
Well, Ken remembered that he could borrow Rob's shirt.
And I hope that he remembers to take his key out of his car before he locks it
next time.
But Rob does have a key in his top drawer.
Our key word is top.
Now if something is the top, that is the highest it can go.
Maybe you have many drawers.
But the top drawer is the highest one.
Maybe you have a bookshelf.
You can put books on the bottom.
You can put books in the middle.
And there is the top shelf.
The books on the top.
Or maybe you can talk about the top floor of a building.
The building is 35 floors high.
The 35th floor is the top floor.
OK.
Well, friends, we learned a lot today.
We hope you can remember what we learned.
A great way to remember all of the new things you learned is to use it.
So try to use our key words and phrases.
Now let's review some of what we learned with Ginger and the Monkey Man.
What are you looking for?
Ginger, I'm looking for my keys.
Where are they?
Well, I don't know.
That's why I'm looking for them.
Did you lock them in the car?
No, I checked the car.
Did someone borrow them?
No, nobody borrowed them.
Are they in your drawer?
No. I looked in my drawer.
Where did you put them?
Well, I don't remember.
I was in such a hurry.
Ouch!
Oh, ouch!
I found your keys.
Where are they?
I'm sitting on them.
Oh, here they are.
Oh, thanks, Ginger!
Ouch!
Ah, my keys.
What happens next?
Well, it's time to review our key words together.
Say them with us.
happen.
happen.
How did you get hurt?
What happened?
hurry.
hurry.
Please hurry.
We are late!
lock.
lock.
Can you lock the door?
Then no one can come in.
remember.
remember.
How old is Grandma?
Do you remember?
top.
top.
Can you get that book for me?
It's up on the top shelf.
Great job reviewing our key words together.
Now it's time for us to take abreak.
