Let's Talk...
In English.
Hi, everyone, welcome to our show right here in the studio.
My name is Andrea.
Yes, it is.
And my name is Gabe.
And would you like to tell us about your day?
Yes? Good.
Well, I would like to hear about your day.
But first, we're going to talk about telling people about your trip.
If you go on a trip, then you have some good stories to tell.
The name of today's lesson is: Tell Us About Your Trip!
Tell someone about something.
What is a trip?
Well, that is one of today's key words.
We have many more words, too.
Many things to learn.
So open up your magazine and let's begin with Conversation A.
Carol! You're back!
How are you?
Tell us about your trip!
Yes! How was Egypt?
My trip was great!
Egypt is a very interesting country.
I loved it!
Tell us about it.
Well, Cairo is a very busy city!
Does it have a lot of traffic?
Yes. And a lot of people, too!
Well, Susie, Ken and Carol are in the Jungle Cafe.
Now in this conversation, we found out that someone came back from a trip.
Andrea, who is back from their trip?
Carol is back from her trip to Egypt.
Excellent! She is back from Egypt.
Let's see. Which city in Egypt did she go and visit, Andrea?
She went to visit Cairo.
And she tells us that Cairo is a very busy city.
It's a busy city.
It has a lot of people, and it has a lot of traffic.
Well yes, that would make a city very busy.
Well, I'm glad that Carol is back.
It's different with her here.
It's great that she is back.
"Back" is a key word.
If you go somewhere, and then you come back, well then you can say you are back.
We are back.
Carol is back.
So if someone is taking a trip, you can ask them: When will you be back?
Or what day are you coming back?
You can say: Have a great trip.
But I'll be happy when you are back.
Well, we also see another good phrase here.
It is: Tell us about your trip.
Now if someone comes back from a trip, it's always nice to ask some questions,
or to show that you are interested in what happened.
Tell us about your trip.
And "trip" is another key word.
Your trip is your vacation somewhere, or the time that you traveled somewhere.
Carol and her husband took a trip to Egypt.
They took a trip there.
So you can use this word in different ways.
You can take a trip somewhere.
You can share about your trip somewhere.
Maybe you went on your honeymoon.
You took a trip somewhere for your honeymoon.
Well friends, right now it's time for us to take a little trip to Conversation
B.
How many people live in Cairo?
About 20 million.
That's a lot!
Is the food good?
Yes. Egyptians eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.
What do they eat for breakfast?
They eat beans, eggs, pickles, cheese and jam.
Did you try an Egyptian breakfast?
Yes. I liked it.
Tell us about your trip.
How was Egypt?
Is the food good?
These are all good questions and phrases to use when someone comes back from a
trip.
Well, in Conversation B, Ken asks, "Is the food good?" Well, Carol says that
Egyptians eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.
She liked the food.
Let's talk about our key word.
vegetable.
A carrot is a vegetable.
Lettuce is a kind of vegetable.
Vegetables are good for you.
And it's important that you eat vegetables every day.
Well, I like vegetables.
How many vegetables can you name in English, friends?
Do you like carrots?
Do you like broccoli?
What other vegetables do you like?
My favorite vegetable...
Actually, I only know the Chinese name.
I love (Chinese).
That is my favorite vegetable.
Andrea, what vegetables do you like?
I also enjoy (Chinese).
Another vegetable I really like is broccoli.
Broccoli is good.
See, I like eating vegetables that have been steamed.
Now you can eat vegetables raw, and they taste harder.
Or you can cook them in water.
I like eating vegetables that way.
But there are many different ways to cook vegetables.
Well, in our conversation, we learned that Egyptians eat a lot of fruits and
vegetables.
We also learned about what they eat for breakfast.
And Carol shared a bit more about Cairo.
We learned that about 20 million people live in that busy city.
"Million" is a number.
A million is 1 plus how many zeroes, Gabe?
Well, it's 1 plus six zeroes.
So 1,000,000.
That is one million.
There are millions of people in Cairo.
There are.
How many people live in the city where you live?
Do millions of people live there?
Well, think about your answer.
Now let's go and continue learning with Conversation C.
How was your tour? Did you like it?
It was great!
Our guide was really good.
We learned many things from him.
Tell us about the Pyramids!
What are they like?
I can tell you about my visit to the Pyramids.
I have an interesting story.
Tell us!
Yes. I like good stories!
Well, we are going to find out more about Carol's story tomorrow.
I can't wait!
I also like good stories.
But in this conversation, Ken has a question.
He says, "Tell us about the Pyramids! What are they like?" What are they like?
"Like" is a key word.
You can use it like this:
What are the Pyramids like?
So if someone asks you what is something like, then you describe something for
them.
What are the Pyramids like?
Well, the Pyramids are tall.
The Pyramids are interesting.
That is what they are like.
Now you can ask many questions using the word "like." It's a great way to have
other people describe things.
It's a great question to ask when you're practicing English.
So Gabe, what has your day been like?
Ooh, what has my day been like?
Well, the weather is pretty nice.
And I'm not hungry.
And I'm working with friends.
My day's been pretty good.
That's what my day has been like.
Now Andrea, you are married.
Tell us, what is your husband like?
What is my husband like?
Well, my husband is a very loving and caring man.
He's very creative and funny.
He makes me laugh a lot.
And my husband is very handsome.
Ooh. Well friends, you know how to use this word "like" in many different ways
now.
So practice using it in English.
Right now it's time for us to go and see Ginger and the Monkey Man.
What are they like?
Talk about that.
I want to go to Egypt.
Hmm. Well, Egypt is an interesting country.
Yeah, there are a lot of people there.
And a lot of traffic, too.
Yeah.
So uh, Ginger, what do you want to do in Egypt?
Ooh, I want to visit the big triangles.
Oh, you mean the Pyramids.
Yeah. And I want to try the food.
Yes, you can eat beans, eggs, pickles, cheese and ham for breakfast.
Oh, that is so sad.
What's so sad about that?
A big breakfast, but no bananas.
We're back!
Well, it's time to review the key words.
The first one is: back.
John comes back to the office in the afternoon.
trip.
trip.
Jane is taking a trip to New York.
million.
million.
Millions of people live in that country.
vegetable.
vegetable.
Lettuce is my favorite vegetable.
like.
like.
Tell me about your school.
What is it like?
Well friends, it's time for us to take a littlebreak.
