Let's Talk in English.
Hello, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
And we are so happy you are here today for a job interview.
Well, actually it's not a job interview for you.
But it is the title of our lesson.
A Job Interview.
And we're going to learn how to talk about job interviews in English.
Now this will help prepare you for a job interview.
It's something that most people have at some point in their life.
Well, we have key words to learn.
You will see them in your magazine.
Please open your magazine to today's lesson.
And let's begin with Conversation A.
"Sure, I can come for an interview.
... Friday at 10:00 is fine with me.
... Thanks! Bye!".
Amber, why do you have an interview on Friday?
I have a job interview.
What? You might leave the LTE TV station?
I might.
Did you tell anyone about this other job?
No. I'm waiting until after the interview.
I might not get the job.
Oh! Wow! We heard some interesting news in Conversation A.
Well, at the beginning of our conversation, Amber says, "Sure, I can come for an
interview." Well, let's see what this word mean.
It's our key word.
interview.
Now an interview is a time when someone asks you questions.
An interview is a time to ask questions, and have someone answer them.
An interview.
Have you ever gone for an interview before?
Well, if you want a new job and you want to work somewhere, then someone at that
company might interview you first.
They will ask you some questions to see if they want to hire you for that job.
An interview.
Right. So this word can also be a verb.
When you go to an interview (that's the noun), someone interviews you.
And when they interview you, they ask you questions.
So if you want to get a job or are looking for a new job, you often go to a
company, give them your application, and then you wait.
And you hope that they will call you for an interview.
And now Ken knows that Amber is going to have an interview somewhere.
Later, he asks, "Did you tell anyone about this other job?" Did she tell anyone
about this other job?
Well, no.
No, she didn't.
She wants to wait until after she gets the job.
Did you tell anyone about...?
You can use this question when you want to know if they've shared it with
someone else.
Did you tell anyone about...?
Or, did you tell anyone about your summer plans?
Did you tell anyone about the new restaurant?
Let's go there sometime.
Friends, did we tell you about Conversation B?
It's time to go there right now.
So what is the job?
A secretary at a big company.
Why do you want that job?
I am a good secretary.
I can answer the phone.
I can help my boss.
You do those things here.
I know.
We need you here.
Thanks, Ken.
And why do you want to work for a big company?
Well, what is the job?
What is Amber going to an interview for?
She might become a secretary at another big company.
"Secretary" is our key word here, friends.
Say it with me.
secretary.
Someone who works in an office for the boss is the secretary.
Maybe they answer the phone.
Or maybe they help the boss organize things.
They have to be in charge of different things to help the boss.
A secretary.
Being a secretary is not an easy job.
Nope.
But Amber says that she is a good secretary.
And we know that.
Being a secretary means you have to help other people.
Now you can use this word "secretary." But you may also hear another word to
talk about this job - an office assistant.
An office assistant is the same as a secretary.
But an office assistant can be a man or a woman.
Usually we only use the word "secretary" when you are talking about a woman who
has that job.
And Amber says she is a good secretary.
She can answer the phone.
She can help her boss.
"Boss" is our next key word.
The boss of a company or organization is the person in charge.
They are leading the company.
And maybe they have many people working for them... maybe just a few.
Maybe the boss is the only one working.
So they are their own boss.
Yes. Well, if you work for a company that has a boss, you want to make sure you
keep your boss happy.
Be kind to your boss and do what your boss says.
That's right, don't make your boss upset.
Well, at the end of this conversation, Ken says, "Why do you want to work for a
big company?" Why do you want to work for this company?
Or, why do you want to work there?
You can ask someone this question if they are going for an interview.
Why does Amber want to work for a big company?
I wonder.
Let's go to Conversation C and find out.
I like the company.
They do good things.
I can learn many new things there.
What about the other workers there?
Do you know any of them?
No. But I'm friendly.
I can meet new people!
I don't understand.
Why are you looking for a new job?
The job is in River City.
I have a lot of family there.
You might move?!
So if Amber gets this new job, well, that means she will move.
Well, Ken seems very surprised by this.
And I think we all are.
But we can learn together from Conversation C.
Ken asks the question:
What about the other workers there?
Do you know any of them?
What about the other workers there?
Let's talk about this key word.
worker.
A worker is a person who works.
If you work at a company, then you are one of the workers at that company.
How many workers are there at your company?
They're also called your coworkers.
If you work together with other workers, they are your coworkers
(C-O-W-O-R-K-E-R-S).
Your coworkers.
So a boss might have many workers.
And you might have many coworkers.
Yes. Well, we find out that Amber doesn't know any other workers there.
But she says that she's friendly and she can meet new people.
Well, that's true. Amber is very friendly.
Our key word is "friendly." Now if someone is friendly, that means they are
happy, they are kind.
It's nice to be around friendly people.
Friendly people are easy to talk to, and oftentimes easy to get to know.
That's right.
And if you have seen the movie Spider Man, Spider Man often called himself "the
friendly neighborhood Spider Man." It's important to be friendly to people.
And someone else who's very friendly is Andrea.
Andre, you're a friendly worker.
Well, you are a friendly coworker, Gabe.
Well, thank you.
And Ginger is very friendly.
Oh, I think she is.
And I think the Monkey Man is, too.
Let's go see these friendly people and monkeys.
Sounds good.
Yeah.
Here we go.
Hey, Monkey Man, why are you reading the newspaper?
Well, I'm looking for a job.
Huh? You already have a job!
I'm looking for a job for you.
Me? I don't like to work.
I like to play.
I know.
Besides, what can a monkey do?
Hey! I can be a secretary.
Really? Can you answer the phone?
No.
Can you help the boss?
No.
Sorry, Ginger, you can't be a secretary.
Hooray! Because I don't like to work.
I like to play.
I know. I know.
Monkey play. Monkey play.
You need to learn how to make coffee first.
Let's review today's key words together.
It's your turn to practice with us.
