Lights.
Camera.
Let's Talk in English.
Welcome, everyone.
We're glad you are here for a new week of learning together.
My name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
And today our lesson is called: Lily Goes to the Store.
Well, that's great.
Lily Goes to the Store.
We're going to talk about shopping for food.
And maybe you can join Lily at the store and shop for some food.
Do you like to shop?
Well, what kinds of things do you get?
Do you ever need to get eggs?
Usually you can buy a dozen eggs at a time.
Well, "dozen" is one of our key words today.
And so is "shop." We will talk about these words and more.
So let's get started in Conversation A.
Hi, Lily.
What are you doing?
Oh, hi, Amber.
I am making a list.
What kind of list?
A grocery list.
I'm going to the supermarket after work.
Do you ever shop at Cost Less?
The prices are really good.
The warehouse store?
I'm not a member.
I am! I shop there all the time.
I save a lot of money.
Lily and Amber are talking here.
Amber says, "I shop there all the time." She shops at Cost Less all the time.
Friends, if you say "I do something all the time," it doesn't mean you are
always doing it, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Andrea, what does this mean if you say "I do this all the time"?
Well, it means that you do it a lot.
Not all the time.
Not every minute of the day.
But you do it a lot.
We can say Sarah is always running.
She runs all the time.
Tom loves to watch movies.
He watches movies all the time.
And he eats popcorn all the time.
Well, Amber says, "I shop there all the time. I save a lot of money." Again,
if she shopped there 24 hours every day, seven days a week, she would not save
any money.
So she shops there often, but not her whole life.
Well friends, our key word here is "save." When you save your money, that means
you are spending in a way that helps you keep more for yourself.
You're not... you're not losing all of your money.
You're saving some money.
Right. And how can you save money when you are shopping?
Well, you can think about how much one thing costs at one store and how much it
costs at another store.
To save money, buy the thing where it is cheaper.
So sometimes it's easy to save money while shopping.
But sometimes you have to think ahead.
You have to make a list and think about where you can buy what you want to buy
the cheapest.
That's right.
Now what else can you save?
Well, you can save power in a building.
You can save electricity by doing something.
What can you do to save electricity, Andrea?
Well, you can save electricity by turning the light off every time you leave a
room.
And you can also save electricity by not using the air conditioner all the time.
Not using it all the time. Very good.
Well friends, we have another key word here.
It is "shop." When you shop for something, that means you are going to buy
something.
Right. Where do you shop?
Where do you buy your groceries?
What store do you shop at?
I like to shop at markets.
I don't like to shop in stores.
I like to shop outside in a market.
And when I shop there, I can get a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Well, there are many places to shop and lots of things to learn.
Let's continue learning with Conversation B.
What do you buy at Cost Less?
I buy lots of things!
I buy their chicken.
It's only $1.99 a pound.
But the package is so big.
That's OK.
I cook some of the chicken.
And I put some in the freezer.
Hmm, that's a good idea.
I can do that, too.
You can! You can save money!
Well, our conversation gave us a good idea on how to save money.
You can buy a big package of meat to save money.
And then you can put that meat in the freezer and use it when you need it.
Hmm, this is something good to think about.
Well, we found out that Amber buys chicken at Cost Less.
How much does that chicken cost, Gabe?
It is only $1.99 a pound.
So it's not expensive.
Andrea, it costs less.
That's true, it costs less.
It's just $1.99 a pound.
Let's talk about this key word.
pound.
Now we use pounds when we are talking about how much something weighs.
Pounds are often used in America.
You buy meat by the pound.
So you can say I would like three pounds of chicken.
Or, I would just like half a pound of meat.
What do you want to buy?
I need a pound of sugar, a pound of chicken.
So you usually see this word "pound" with the word "of" - a pound of something.
Or you can buy uh, something else.
You could say these books weigh about a pound.
So it can weigh about a pound or two or three pounds.
Or you can buy a pound of something.
And when traveling, you might use this word as well.
You have to make sure you know how much your bags weigh.
Your bags should not weigh more than 50 pounds.
And of course, you can also use the word "pound" when talking about how much a
person weighs.
He weighs 160 pounds.
Our next key word here is "package." Well, when you buy things at Cost Less, the
packages are very big.
"Package" talks about what you buy things in.
You can buy a package of potatoes or a package of meat.
That's right.
It's usually bigger than just a little bag.
It's a package of something.
What do you buy in packages?
I should probably tell you one of my favorite things is brown paper packages
tied up with string.
Wow, that's very special, Gabe. Yes.
Well, it's one of my favorite things.
You're right. And if you go to a store...
What? You can get a package of something.
Yes, you can.
Like at Cost Less.
At Cost Less.
OK, friends.
Well, we are having fun as we are learning together.
Let's continue with Conversation C.
How much is a dozen eggs at Cost Less?
You can't buy a dozen eggs.
You can only buy two dozen.
They cost $3.00.
That's a lot of eggs!
You can eat more eggs.
Or you can bake cakes and cookies.
I can. Maybe I can try Cost Less.
Sure! I can take you there after work.
Thanks!
Interesting.
Well, things do cost less at Cost Less.
How much is a dozen eggs at Cost Less?
Andrea, were you paying attention?
How much is a dozen eggs?
A dozen eggs is three dollars.
That's a good price.
Yes, it is a good price.
It does cost less there.
Well friends, how much is a dozen?
What is a dozen?
That's our key word.
A dozen of anything is twelve.
So a dozen eggs is twelve eggs.
Yes, a dozen.
Now we often use this word "dozen" when you're talking about buying things.
You can buy a dozen eggs.
You can get a dozen apples at a store.
Maybe your mom says: Please bring home a dozen dinner rolls for dinner.
Now how much is a dozen?
You know it's twelve.
So if you're good at math, then you know how much two dozen is.
Andrea, how much is two dozen?
I can do this, Gabe. No problem.
I'm not even nervous.
Two dozen is 24.
Good. Three dozen?
Three dozen?
Three dozen is... is 36.
You laughed... That's good, 36. Excellent!
I'm sure you know many dozens, friends.
Well, right now it's time for us to continue with the Monkey Man and Ginger.
Monkey Man, I want to go to Cost Less.
But Cost Less is a warehouse store.
I know. We can save a lot of money.
Yes, the prices are really good there.
Let's go to Cost Less!
Let's go to Cost Less!
But Ginger, I'm not a member.
Are you?
Yes, I am a member.
You are a member?
Yes, I am a member of the monkey family.
That's not the same, Ginger.
You need to be a member of the warehouse store.
Oh. OK, let's join.
Let's go to Cost Less!
Let's go to Cost Less!
I want to be a member.
All right, friends, let's review our key words right now.
The first one is: shop.
shop.
Let's shop for food at this store.
save.
save.
Buy things on sale.
You can save money.
pound.
pound.
Cindy needs three pounds of meat.
package.
package.
There are four apples in the package.
dozen.
dozen.
There are 12 eggs in a dozen.
Yes, there are.
Well friends, right now it's time for us all to take a little break.
We'll be rightback.
