Lights.

Let's Talk in English.
Hey, everyone, and welcome to our show right here at LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
And we are so glad that you are here because we are talking about Two Great
Sports.
That's right, Two Great Sports.
Now, everyone loves to talk about sports.
Which sport do you like best?
Can you think of two sports that you think are great?
Do you think everyone else thinks those sports are great?
Well, today we are going to talk about sports that you like, and how to talk
about sports that maybe you don't like.
Well, we like key words.
And we have many in today's lesson.
So please open your magazine, find today's lesson, go to Conversation A, and
let's begin.
Hi, Ken. What are you doing?
I'm watching a soccer game.
It's exciting!
What? No. Soccer is boring.
Soccer is not boring!
The players just run and kick a ball.
The players do run a lot.
But then someone scores a goal!
That's exciting!
But the team only gets one point.
The game might end 1-0.
That's boring.
It's exciting.
It's boring.
It's exciting.
It's boring.
Well, we are talking about soccer.
And Ken thinks that soccer is exciting.
Gabe, what does Lily think about soccer?
Well, let me tell you, Andrea.
Lily thinks that soccer is not exciting.
She thinks it is boring.
That's right.
Well, everybody thinks differently about sports.
Maybe you think one sport is exciting.
But somebody else thinks it is...
Boring.
But friends, I have to tell you, I think that soccer is more exciting to play
than to watch.
I... I would like to play soccer more than watch soccer.
Well, I'm glad we can learn about soccer together.
Let's look at our key words.
But the team only gets one point.
Yes, in soccer when you score a goal, your team gets one point.
Let's talk about this key word.
point.
Now when you are playing a game or playing a sport, you get points.
You get points because you did something good.
In soccer, if the ball goes into the net, if you get a goal, your team gets a
point.
Your team gets a point.
How many points does your team have right now?
Well, if you're watching a soccer game, you will not see a lot of points.
If you're watching a basketball game,
then you will see each team has many more points because you can score points a
lot more quickly in basketball than in soccer.
So you can score points during a game.
Well, that's why Lily think soccer is boring.
She says, "The game might end 1-0." It's not very exciting when there's not a
lot of points.
Well, that's how Lily feels.
Let's talk about this key word.
end.
Here, "end" is a verb.
When the game ends, everyone goes home.
When a game ends, it is finished.
So "end" means finished.
Or you could say, "How did you end your trip?" You had a great vacation.
What did you do at the end?
How did you end the trip?
Well friends, this ends our teaching for Conversation A.
Let's go now to Conversation B.
Do you watch many soccer games?
No. I like other sports.
I don't watch soccer.
Why not?
Soccer is boring!
And I don't really understand it.
What don't you understand?
Well, why can't you use your hands in soccer?
It's one of the rules.
You kick the ball with your feet.
Or you hit it with other parts of your body.
Well, Lily does not like soccer.
Actually, we find out why.
It's because she doesn't understand something about soccer.
Ken says, "What don't you understand?" Now if someone tells you, "I'm sorry. I
don't understand," you can ask this question.
What don't you understand?
And Andrea, what doesn't Lily understand about soccer?
Well, she doesn't understand why you can't use your hands in soccer.
That's right, she doesn't understand.
She doesn't understand these rules.
Well friends, we want to help you understand some key words in this
conversation.
The first one is "hand." You have two hands - a right hand and a left hand.
Now which hand do you write with?
Are you right-handed or are you left-handed?
I am right-handed.
I write with my right hand.
Hey Gabe, can I shake your hand?
Yes, of course.
We can shake each other's right hand.
That's good.
Wow, your hands are very strong, Gabe!
Yes. Oh, I'm sorry. I don't want to hurt you.
Yeah, you kind of hurt my hand.
Sorry about hurting your hand there.
Well, it's true. In many countries, you greet someone by shaking with your right
hand.
Now you might be right-handed.
You might be left-handed.
Or maybe you do some things with your right hand, and some things with your left
hand.
Which one are you?
Are you right-handed or left-handed?
Talk about that today in English.
Right now we have another key word.
It is: body.
Yes. Well, you have a body too.
You have a head and arms and hands and legs and feet.
You have a body.
Yes.
And in soccer, you can't use your hands.
But you can hit the ball with other parts of your body.
So Lily is learning more about the rules in soccer.
And we are learning more together as well.
That's right.
We have more to learn in Conversation C.
Here we go.
But the goalie can use his hands.
Why can't everyone use their hands?
It's just the rule!
Maybe I can watch more soccer.
Then I can understand it.
We can watch soccer together!
Can I watch this game with you now?
Sure.
Is your team winning or losing?
My team just scored!
We're winning!
Soccer may not be exciting.
But you are!
Well, in Conversation B, we learned that you can't use your hands when you play
soccer.
But Lily starts Conversation C by saying: But the goalie can use his hands.
So why can't everyone use their hands?
And what does Ken say?
He says, "It's just the rule." That's just a rule in soccer.
Of course, you need to follow the rules.
You do need to follow the rules.
And the goalie is the soccer player who tries to make sure that the ball does
not go in the net.
So the goalie can use his hands.
Well, Lily has another question in our conversation.
She says, "Is your team winning or losing?" Winning or losing?
Well, let's talk about our key word.
lose.
When you lose a game or when your team loses a game, that means you don't win or
your team doesn't win.
That's right, you lost the game.
But if your team is losing the game, that means the game is not over yet, but
your team has fewer points.
So if your team is losing the game, it doesn't mean that you lost.
You need to wait until the end of the game.
And then you can say, "I lost the game." Of course, you want to say, "We won the
game." We didn't lose.
We won.
We won.
Well, we find out that Ken's team is not losing right now.
Ken's team is winning.
And Ken is pretty excited about that.
Well, even if Lily is not excited about soccer, it sounds like she's having fun.
And we're going to keep having fun as we review with Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Why? Why? Why?
Why, why, why what?
Why do people like soccer?
Because soccer is exciting.
No, no, no, soccer is boring.
How can you say that?
Run, run, run. Kick, kick, kick. Boring.
Goal! Goal! Goal! That's exciting!
Can you use your hands when you play?
No. Only the goalie can use his hands.
Can you use your tail?
No. People don't have tails!
Can monkeys use their tails when they play soccer?
No. Monkeys don't play soccer.
Why not?
Because they think it's boring!
And it is.
Soccer is exciting!
OK.
Let's review today's key words together.
point.
point.
Justin scored 15 points for his basketball team.
end.
end.
How does the book end?
I didn't finish it.
hand.
hand.
Jan hurt her hand.
She can't write with it.
body.
body.
I ran 10 miles yesterday.
My body is sore today.
lose.
lose.
How was the game?
Did your team win or lose?
Great job! Well done!
Now it's time for us to take abreak.
