Let's Talk in English.
Hey, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
It's a great place.
And we're glad you could be here.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
Gabe, you're right. This is a great place.
And we have some great new things to learn together.
The title of our lesson today is: Ken's Kitchen.
So we're going to talk about Ken's kitchen and learn some words that you can use
to talk about your kitchen and a lot more.
Now maybe some of you are in your kitchen right now.
Maybe you have a dish with food in it, and you're eating as you watch our show.
Well, we're happy that you watch us in your kitchen, in your living room, or
wherever you are.
Please open your magazine to find today's lesson.
Do you see Conversation A?
Yes? Great. Well, then we can begin.
Hey, Susie, you cook well.
I do?
Why do you say that?
You always make great dishes for parties.
Thanks, Ken.
I don't cook very often.
But maybe I can spend more time in my kitchen.
Good idea! You can cook!
Then you can save money.
I know. Restaurants can be expensive!
At the beginning of our conversation, Ken tells Susie that she cooks well.
He says, "Susie, you cook well." Now Susie is a little surprised.
She wonders why Ken just said that.
So she asks, "Why do you say that?" Why do you say that?
Now if someone tells you something, and you're not sure why they told you that,
or you wonder about it, well then you can also ask this question.
Why do you say that?
You want to know more about it.
Well Andrea, I think that you teach very well.
Well, thanks, Gabe. But why do you say that?
Well, because lots of people learn new things whenever you teach.
You teach very well.
And Andrea, I also think that you cook very well.
You do? Well, why do you say that, Gabe?
Well, because I am hoping that if I say that more, then you'll cook some things
for me, like apple pie and cookies and...
OK, OK, Gabe. I... I understand what you are doing.
And you're also helping the students know how to use this question, right?
Exactly.
Why do you say that?
Well, we do have some key words to talk about here.
Let's look at the first one.
It is "dish." A dish is something that you can make.
I'm sure Andrea makes very good dishes.
There are different kinds of dishes: spicy dishes, sweet dishes.
Just a kind of food that you make.
Yes. So you can make a dish, or you can go to a restaurant and order a dish.
Let's talk about this key word.
restaurant.
A restaurant is a place that you can go to to order food.
Now at some restaurants, you can eat the food there.
At some restaurants, you order the food and maybe take it out and go home and
eat there.
That's right.
Maybe that's kind of a fast food restaurant.
You can order food, get it pretty quickly, and then take it to go at a fast food
restaurant.
There are expensive restaurants, fancy restaurants, different kinds of
restaurants.
What is your favorite restaurant?
What is your favorite dish at your favorite restaurant?
Well, we have more to learn.
Let's continue with Conversation B.
Can you help me, Susie?
Do you want cooking lessons?
Maybe. But I need something else first.
What do you need?
I need things for my kitchen!
You don't have any pots and pans?
I have a few pots and pans.
But I need some big ones.
I need a new kitchen knife, too.
Uh, Andrea, can you help me?
Can I help you?
Yes, can you help me?
Well, sure, I can help you.
Well uh, this is how I need your help.
I need you to help talk about this key word in this conversation.
Do you want me to talk about the key word?
Well yes, I need your help.
Can you help me?
Well yes, I can help you.
And I can help you talk about our key word.
knife.
knife.
A knife is something that you use to cut things.
Now there are different kinds of knives.
But no matter what kind of knife you use, you have to be careful.
Now Gabe, can you help me continue to teach this key word?
Well yes, I can.
Something that will help is if you can see a knife... like this.
A knife is something very sharp.
And it's true. You need to be careful when you are using a knife.
This is not a kitchen knife.
This is kind of a... a fun knife.
It's actually not really that sharp.
But Ken needs a new knife, and he needs a new kitchen knife.
It's something that he will use to cut things in the kitchen.
And many people have different kinds of knives in their kitchen.
So the plural form, or when you are talking about two or more, is "knives,"
K-N-I-V-E-S.
So one knife, but two or more knives.
We know that you can remember that and use it.
That's right.
Well friends, it's time for us to learn a little more with Conversation C.
Let's find out more about Ken's kitchen.
A good, sharp knife is important.
Yes. Then I can cut vegetables and meat well.
What else do you need?
I need a large bowl.
I only have small ones.
You can mix things in a large bowl.
You need a lot of things, Ken.
I know.
But at least I have a stove and a microwave!
Gabe, I need your help.
OK, how can I help you?
OK. Do you have a knife?
Yes. You know I have a knife right here in my pocket.
Good. Good.
Now I have a hole in my pocket.
Here is the knife, Andrea.
Thank you.
Is it sharp?
Yeah, very sharp.
Be careful with that knife.
Now Andrea, what else do you need?
I also need a bowl.
A bowl.
A bowl.
Well, it's a good thing I... I'm holding a bowl right here.
Here's the bowl.
Oh, that's great! That's great!
Good. Thank you.
What else do you need?
I also need an apple.
You need an apple?
Yes, I need an apple.
Um, Andrea, I do not have an apple for you.
I am sorry.
Well Gabe, I wanted to use my sharp knife to cut an apple, and put the pieces in
my bowl.
Um, I'm sorry. I can't help you with an apple.
But I can help you with our key words here in this conversation.
Well, OK, you can help me.
Thank you.
I would love to teach the first one.
It is "sharp." Andrea is holding a sharp knife.
That means it is dangerous.
A knife is sharp.
Scissors are sharp.
There's one side that is very pointy.
And if you're not careful, you might get cut with something sharp.
Yes, you don't want to touch the sharp part of a knife.
And Susie is right.
A good, sharp knife is important.
You need that to cut vegetables and cut meat.
Well, we have another key word to look at, and that is "bowl." A bowl is
something that is important in a kitchen.
You can cook food and then put it in a bowl, and eat the food out of a bowl.
Gabe, what kind of food do you eat from a bowl?
Well, you can have soup in a bowl.
You could have ice cream in a bowl.
Those are my favorite things to have in bowls.
I love eating ice cream out of bowls, especially chocolate ice cream.
Ooh, so you would probably like a big bowl of chocolate ice cream.
Yes. Do you have a big bowl of chocolate ice cream for me?
Uh, no. But I have a bowl for you.
Ah, right, this is my second favorite thing - just an empty bowl. Thank you,
Andrea.
Good.
OK. Well, we have more for you right now.
Let's review with Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Wow! I want cooking lessons.
Ginger, you don't know how to cook.
Yeah, I know.
That's why I want cooking lessons.
Well, do you have any pots and pans?
Uh, no, I don't.
Do you have a kitchen knife?
Uh, no, I don't.
Do you have any large bowls?
No, I don't.
Do you have a stove or a microwave?
No, I don't.
So how can you cook?
Use your kitchen.
Oh.
Let's review today's key words together.
It's your turn to practice with us.
The first one is: dish.

This dish has beef and vegetables.
