Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everybody. My name is Andrea.
And I'm here with...
Gabe.
That's right, my name is Gabe.
And you are here at LTE TV.
We have a good program for you today.
Our lesson is called: The Need for Sleep.
That's right, we all need sleep.
Of course, friends, don't fall asleep right now.
Stay awake.
Open up your magazine.
And we have some things to learn from today's lesson.
It's important to sleep if you want to be healthy.
You need to sleep if you want to have enough energy during the day.
Everybody in all societies needs sleep.
Some people have a lack of sleep.
And that's not good.
But healthy, energy, society, lack... what do these words mean?
Well, today we're going to find out.
So open up your magazine, and let's begin with Conversation A.
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Do you sleep enough?
Most people don't.
Our special guest today is here to talk to us about sleep.
Welcome, Ms. Nod.
Thank you for joining me today.
You're welcome, Rob.
We know everyone needs sleep to stay healthy.
Yes. Your body needs time to repair itself.
It does that when you sleep.
And we need sleep to give us energy for the next day.
Right. But most people don't sleep enough because we live in a 24/7 society.
Yes, we do!
I know I don't sleep enough.
Well, I think Ms. Nod is right.
We do live in a 24/7 society - a society that is busy 24 hours a day and 7 days
a week.
And what is society?
That's our key word.
A society is a group of people that live and work together.
So it could be a small town or village.
Or you could talk about a city.
The society of your city or your area.
And we are all part of different societies.
You can be part of a society where you live, or even part of a society at your
school or work.
And yes, if you are part of a society, it's busy 24/7.
Well, even though we are all part of societies, we all are busy, we still need
sleep to stay healthy and to have energy.
That's right.
And you want to be healthy, right?
"Healthy" is our key word.
If you are healthy, that means there's not much wrong with your body.
You have good health.
You're eating the right things.
You're exercising.
You're doing the right things.
And you have a lot of sleep.
You are healthy.
Yes. And of course, you want to be healthy.
You want to stay healthy.
If you're not healthy, then maybe you can try to get healthy.
Well, you should get healthy.
And if you get enough sleep, then you will have enough energy to live every day.
"Energy" is our key word here.
And if you have energy, that means you are awake, you are alive.
You can do many different things if you have energy.
And we use energy every day.
If you're a student, you need energy to study.
If you work, you need energy to do your job.
We all need energy.
When you don't have enough energy, well then it's time to rest and it's time to
sleep.
Andrea, you need energy right now.
I need energy?
Yes, you need to uh, watch something exciting, like Conversation B.
Here we go.
Energy.
That would give you energy.
Energy.
Energy.
I need energy...
May I tell you some more things about sleep?
Please do!
Not getting enough sleep shortens your life.
Lack of sleep makes you look older, too.
Really!
Also, too little sleep can make you gain weight.
Why is that?
You feel hungrier when you don't get enough sleep.
Everyone should try to sleep seven or more hours a night.
I know I will!
Not getting enough sleep shortens your life!
That's right, Andrea.
Not getting enough sleep can make you feel hungrier.
And it can make you look older.
So shortening your life, making you look older, making you hungrier, making you
gain weight.
These are all things that can happen if you have a lack of sleep.
Well, we don't have a lack of things to learn.
Let's talk about this key word.
lack.
Now if you have a lack of something, that means you don't have enough.
So a lack of sleep causes you to feel bad.
That means not getting enough sleep makes you feel bad.
And this word "lack" can also be a verb.
You can have a lack of sleep.
Or you can say: I lack sleep.
I lack water.
Or, I have a lack of water.
Well, we have one more key word here.
We don't have a lack of key words.
The word is "gain." When you gain something, that means you are getting more of
something.
And too little sleep or a lack of sleep can cause you to gain weight.
When you gain weight, that means you get more weight.
And sometimes you get more weight than you need when you gain weight.
Well, what other kinds of things can you gain?
You can gain respect.
If you do something great, or if you're just a great person who does the right
things, you will gain respect from those around you.
People will start respecting you more.
Yes.
And you can gain knowledge.
Knowledge is all the things that you learn.
So I think that we've gained some knowledge together today.
Well, we have more to talk about in our Read It.
To stay healthy, you need enough sleep.
Your body repairs itself when you sleep.
Sleep also gives you energy for the next day.
But getting enough sleep is not easy because we live in a 24/7 society.
Lack of sleep can shorten your life.
And people who don't sleep enough can gain weight.
And you look older when you don't get enough sleep.
So be sure to get seven hours of sleep every night!
Well, we find out here that getting enough sleep is not easy because we live in
a 24/7 society.
Uh Andrea, let's just review this again.
What does 24/7 mean?
Well, that means 24 hours a day.
Every day has 24 hours.
7 days a week.
A week has 7 days.
So 24/7 basically means all the time.
All the time.
How can you use this phrase or these numbers, 24/7?
You can say:
Gina works a lot.
She works 24/7.
It seems like she never sleeps!
If there is a store that is open all the time, you can say that is a 24/7 store.
It's always open.
You can always go there and buy something, 24/7.
And we do live in a 24/7 society.
Many cities or many countries like to work 24/7, or be busy all the time.
We live in a 24/7 society.
Well friends, right now it's time for us to go and see the busy Monkey Man and
busy Ginger.
They're part of our 24/7 society.
Here we go.
Ginger! Ginger! Ginger, what are you doing?
Oh! I'm sleeping.
Shh! Don't wake me up.
I will wake you up.
Ginger, get up!
Oh. Please don't.
I need sleep to stay healthy.
But you can't sleep now.
But I need sleep.
It gives me energy.
Ginger, we live in a 24/7 society.
Wake up.
Lack of sleep makes me look old, like you.
Ginger!
Lack of sleep makes me gain weight.
Well yes, you do need sleep, but...
Lack of sleep can shorten my life!
Ginger, wake up so we can talk about sleep.
We just did.
Oh, yeah. Well, sweet dreams.
Yeah.
Hey, hey, hey, now let's review our key words.
The first one is: healthy.
healthy.
Jane is very healthy because she eats lots of vegetables.
energy.
energy.
I'm really tired today. I don't have much energy.
society.
Say it again.
society.
Many people in our society are too busy.
lack.
