Lights.
Camera.
Let's Talk in English.
Hey, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
Thank you for joining us.
Today we are going to celebrate Moon Festival together.
Yes, the title of our lesson is Moon Festival.
And we are going to learn how to talk about this special holiday in English.
Mmm, I'm getting hungry.
I would like to have a moon cake right now.
But no. First, we have to learn many things together.
So please open your magazine, find today's lesson, and let's begin with
Conversation A.
Hi, Ken, would you like a moon cake with your coffee?
OK. What's a moon cake?
It's a traditional pastry.
We eat them at Moon Festival time.
It doesn't look like American cake.
No. It has filling in it.
What kind?
This one has red bean filling.
Others have fruit or nuts in them.
OK, I'll try it.
Mmm, this is good!
(Music).
Mmm, a moon cake does sound very good right now.
Lily says: Ken, would you like a moon cake with your coffee?
Well, let's start by looking at this word "moon." The moon is in the sky at
night.
The moon looks like a big circle that gives us light.
Do you like to look at the moon?
I think it's kind of cool to go out walking at night looking at the moon.
Now, at some times during the month, it will be a full moon.
That's when it looks like a circle.
I like that when it's a full moon.
Yes, it's nice to see a full moon.
It's nice and light at night with a... a full moon.
Uh Gabe, you've been eating some nuts.
Yeah. They're really delicious, Andrea.
Here, have some nuts.
Oh, well, sure. I... I like nusts.
Mmhm.
Oh, and "nut" is a key word.
nut.
nut.
A nut is something that you can eat.
Nuts are often in baking.
Or you can use nuts to cook with.
In our conversation, we are talking about nuts in moon cakes.
And there are lots of different kinds of nuts.
Peanuts are probably the most famous.
But of course, there are walnuts and almonds and pecans.
There are different kinds of nuts.
I like to eat nuts sometimes.
But if I'm going to have a cookie or a piece of cake, I don't like nuts in my
cookies.
OK.
Yeah.
Well, some people like nuts in things; some people don't.
It's good that you can just eat nuts by themselves.
Well, would you like to have nuts in your moon cake?
I do like nuts in my moon cakes.
And I like to eat moon cakes during the Moon Festival.
Well yes, we've been talking about the moon and moon cakes.
And this all has to do with Moon Festival.
Moon Festival is a holiday.
It's a time to celebrate with your family and friends.
Many people eat moon cakes and have barbecues outside to celebrate.
And you celebrate Moon Festival when there is a new moon in the fall or during
autumn.
That's true.
Well, we have more to learn about this special holiday.
And I'd like to have some more of those nuts, Gabe.
Oh. Well, of course. Here you go, Andrea.
Thank you. OK.
Well, you enjoy uh, Conversation B.
And we will be right back.
(Music).
My aunt sent me these moon cakes from Taiwan.
When is Moon Festival?
The day after tomorrow.
It's also called Mid-Autumn Festival.
What does it celebrate?
The moon!
It's at its biggest and brightest on Moon Festival!
What do you do on Moon Festival other than eat moon cakes?
Families get together and enjoy a big meal.
And we go outside and look at the moon.
That sounds fun!
Families get together.
They go outside and look at the moon.
That sounds fun!
That's a good phrase.
That sounds fun!
Andrea, I am going to an amusement park tomorrow.
That sounds fun!
Uh huh.
Well, I am going to have a picnic in the park.
Well, that sounds fun!
Well, I am going to the dentist on Sunday.
Really?
Yeah.
That doesn't sound fun.
Oh, you're right. That doesn't sound fun.
Some things sound fun; some things don't sound so fun.
Well, Conversation C was a fun conversation.
We had some good key words here.
The Moon Festival is also called Mid-Autumn Festival.
"Autumn" is our key word.
Autumn is another name for fall.
There are four seasons in a year: spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Of course, you don't say the end sound at the end of this word.
It is autumn.
Yes.
Leaves change color in autumn.
Well, we also found out more about Mid-Autumn Festival, which is another name
for Moon Festival.
Moon Festival celebrates the moon.
It's at its biggest and brightest on Moon Festival.
It's at its biggest and brightest.
So it's a full moon.
And we have a good key word here.
bright.
If something is bright, that means it gives a lot of light.
I think the brightest thing that we know of is our sun.
That's the thing that gives us light in our world.
The bright sun.
Yes.
So we can say that stars are bright, the moon is brighter, but the sun is the
brightest.
That's right, the sun is the brightest.
And of course, you can see us here on TV because there are bright lights.
Sometimes you need to have bright lights in order to see.
Well, right now it's time for us to continue with our Read It paragraph.
People celebrate Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival in September or October.
The date is different every year.
On Moon Festival, the moon is at its biggest and brightest.
Families get together.
Many have barbecues or picnics outside so they can look at the moon.
On Moon Festival, many people enjoy moon cakes.
These traditional pastries can have red bean filling or have fruits or nuts in
them.
Some also have an egg in the middle.
We just reviewed a lot of what we learned about Moon Festival in our Read It.
Now we also learned that the date is different every year.
Some holidays have the same date, like Christmas is always December 25.
But Moon Festival is a different date every year.
Now why in that, Gabe?
Well, it's different because you can never tell when the moon will be at its
biggest and brightest.
And so the full moon is on a different date every month.
And so it will be on a different date every year.
Yes. So this festival actually follows the lunar calendar.
"Lunar" means moon.
So it follows the calendar that follows the moon.
That's right.
And you just used a keyword that we learned not too long ago, the word "follow."
So you can follow a certain calendar, too.
The lunar calendar.
Well, we hope that you all have a wonderful Mid-Autumn Festival.
Celebrate the moon and eat a lot of moon cakes.
Have some with nuts in them.
Now it's time for us to learn more from Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Hooray! Hooray!
The Moon Festival is coming!
Yes, it is.
Happy Moon Festival.
So where is it?
Where is what?
Where is my red envelope?
Uh... you don't get a red envelope, Ginger.
Why not? I'm a good, good monkey.
Red envelopes are for Chinese New Year.
This is Moon Festival.
Oh. So what do I get for Moon Festival?
Well, you get a moon cake.
Oh. Hooray! Hooray!
I want a moon cake.
OK, what do you want inside the moon cake?
I want money inside.
No... You can have bean or fruit or nuts.
Oh, I want fruit.
I want a banana moon cake.
Yeah!
Please review today's key words with us.
The first one is: moon.
