Let's Talk in English.
Hello, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
Thank you for joining us today.
We have a new lesson just for all of you.
Family Visits.
Yes, that is the title of today's lesson.
We are going to learn how to talk about different people in your family: your
parents, your grandma, maybe your aunts and uncles and your cousins.
Now these are all words that we can use when you are talking about your family.
And we will learn them together in today's lesson.
So please open your magazine to today's lesson, find Conversation A because
that's where we will begin.
Here we go.
Good morning, Ken. How are you?
I'm fine, Rob. But I'm tired.
Why are you tired?
My parents and my grandma are visiting this week.
I am very busy.
Are you taking them places?
Yes. We're going to restaurants, movies and museums.
You are busy!
How long are they staying?
They are staying until Saturday.
Rob starts our conversation by saying, "Good morning, Ken. How are you?" Well,
of course that's a great way to start a conversation.
Ken says he's tired.
So Rob asks another question.
He says, "Why are you tired?" Now someone tells you something.
It's good to ask another question to find out more about it.
OK, Gabe, how are you today?
Well, I'm doing well.
But I'm a little bit hungry.
Oh.
Yeah.
Why are you hungry?
Well, because I woke up too late to have breakfast today.
That's why.
OK.
Do you want to ask me how I'm doing?
Andrea, I was just wondering how you are doing.
Can you tell me how you're doing?
Well, I'm great.
I am happy today.
Um, why are you so happy today?
Because I'm here at the studio with you doing one of my favorite things -
teaching on Let's Talk in English.
So when someone shares how they're feeling, ask another question to keep the
conversation going.
Well, let's look at a key word together.
It is "parent." parent.
"Parent" is another word for your mom or dad.
You can say, "My mom and dad are my parents," or "My dad is my parent." And
maybe you are a parent as well.
Where do your parents live?
Do you live with your parents or not?
Andrea, where do your parents live?
My parents live in Canada.
Well, what about you?
Are you a parent, Andrea?
Yes, I am a parent.
I am a mom.
I have a son, a sweet little boy.
You do have a sweet little boy.
Are you a grandma, Andrea?
Uh Gabe, I'm not a grandma.
I'm not old enough to be a grandma!
Well... well, you're right.
I just wanted to use the key word.
We have a key word here.
It is "grandma." Friends, your grandma is your mom or dad's mother.
And of course, I know Andrea is not not a grandma.
Thank you, Gabe.
I... I knew that you were kidding.
Well, my son's grandma is my mother.
Well, we continue to learn about different people in your family today.
And let's do that with Conversation B.
My family visits sometimes.
I take them places, too.
Do you have a big family?
I have two sisters and one brother.
That's big.
My mother has three brothers and four sisters.
And my dad has two brothers and one sister.
So you have lots of aunts and uncles.
I do.
And sometimes they all visit at the same time!
Well, I like this conversation.
You found out how to talk about your family in this conversation.
There are some questions that you can ask to find out about someone's family.
Ken asked, "Do you have a big family?" You can ask this question.
Do you have a big family?
Andrea, do you have a big family?
Well... No, I don't actually have a big family.
The family I grew up with - my mother, father and brother.
Well, there are only four of us.
So that's not very big.
And now I have my husband and my son.
So I have a family of three.
OK. So there are two different families that we are talking about here.
And if you are married and you have kids, then that could be one family.
And the other family you talk about is you and your brothers and sisters, and
your parents.
So sometimes you might need to ask a certain question if you want to find out
about someone's family that they grew up with.
Or, if you want to find out about someone's family and their kids, you might
ask:
"Tell me about your kids. How many kids do you have?" Or "how long have you been
married?" if you want to find out about that family.
Well, we have two more family members in our conversation - aunt and uncle.
Let's talk about your aunt.
Your aunt is your mother or father's sister.
Now, you can also call your uncle's wife your aunt.
That's right. So that is your aunt.
And your uncle... This is another key word.
Your uncle is your mom or dad's brother.
So your aunts and uncles, they all have names.
In English, you put the word "Aunt" or "Uncle" before the name.
So my Aunt Mary and my Uncle Perry.
Or my Aunt Sally and my Uncle Wally.
So Gabe, do you have many aunts and uncles?
I do have a lot.
My mom has two sisters.
My dad has three sisters and four brothers.
So I have four uncles and... Let's see, five aunts.
Mmhm, there.
Wow! Gabe, you have a big family.
I do have a big family.
But I do not have a cute child like yours yet, Andrea.
Well, not yet, Gabe.
You will get married and have your own family one day.
One day I will have my own family.
So you can talk about different kinds of families here.
Do you have a big family?
Share about it in English.
Right now it's time for us to continue with Conversation C.
Then you're really busy!
Yes. I have a lot of cousins, too.
Do they ever stay with you?
Some of them do.
But my apartment isn't very big.
And I only have one bathroom!
That's a problem for guests.
Yes.
But my Uncle Zach doesn't stay with me.
I'm so glad!
Gabe, you told us that you have many aunts and uncles.
Mmhm.
So do you have a lot of cousins?
I do have a lot of cousins.
But Andrea, I don't know how many cousins I have.
My youngest aunt has twelve kids!
So if I count all of my cousins, that's... that's a lot.
I do have a lot of cousins.
Wow! You do have a lot of cousins.
Well, "cousin" is a key word.
Your aunt or your uncle's child is your cousin.
So if you have a lot of aunts and uncles, and they have a lot of children, then
you have a lot of cousins.
And I do have a lot of cousins.
I miss my cousins.
I love my cousins very much.
Actually, a lot of my cousins are already married.
And one of my cousins is getting married very soon this year.
I'm very excited for my cousin.
Well, do you ever stay with your cousins when you visit America?
I love staying with my family.
And yes, I do stay with my cousins sometime.
My Cousin Sam lives in an apartment.
And I like to stay with him when I visit.
Well, when you stay with a cousin or stay with your aunt or your uncle, that
means you are with them for a short time.
You can stay at someone's house or stay at a hotel.
That means you are there for a short time.
You do not live there.
You are just staying there.
Well, do you ever stay with your cousins or aunts or uncles, Andrea?
Well yes, I do.
I used to stay with them often when my family would visit Germany.
All of my aunts and uncles are in Germany.
But today, I would love to stay with them again.
Well, it is fun to visit relatives - your aunts, uncles, grandparents and
cousins.
And friends, it's also fun to find out what Ginger and the Monkey Man are
talking about.
Let's go see that now.
I'm so tired, tired, tired.
Ginger, why are you so tired today?
I'm so busy, busy, busy!
And why are you so busy?
I've been going lots of places, places, places.
Like what places?
Restaurants, movies, museums...
OK, so you really are busy.
Yeah, and tired.
My family is visiting.
And I'm taking them places.
Who's visiting?
My parents, my grandma, my aunts and uncles, my cousins.
Wow! That's a lot of visitors.
I'm getting tired just thinking about it.
Yeah.
It is time to review today's key words together.
So please say them with us.
