Lights.
Camera.
Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone. My name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
And we are very happy that you could be here with us today.
Our lesson is called: Rob's Invitation.
Rob's Invitation.
Hmm, I wonder if he made an invitation, or if he got an invitation.
We'll find out in today's lesson.
I wonder who will accept the invitation.
If you have an invitation and you don't want to go, what do you do?
Do you politely refuse?
Are you honest about how you feel?
Well, accept, invitation, politely, refuse, honest - these are very good words
to know.
And you're going to learn all about them in today's lesson.
We have those words and much more to learn.
So let's open up our magazines and get started with Conversation A.
Hey, Lily, what would you do if someone invited you to an opera?
I don't know.
I'd probably accept the invitation.
Are you going to invite me to an opera?
No. I really don't like opera music.
My friend invited me to go to an opera with her.
And you don't want to go.
I really don't want to go.
But how can I tell her politely?
How can I tell her politely?
A good question.
"Politely" is a good key word.
If you say something politely or if you do something politely, that means you do
it in a nice way with good manners.
Yes, you do it in a polite way.
Can you please politely ask her to pick you up from school?
Please politely say "Thank you" when someone gives you a gift.
Well, saying "Thank you" is a polite thing to do.
So this word "politely" is an adverb.
It comes from the adjective "polite." Be polite.
Do things politely.
We have some other key words here.
One is "accept." When you accept something, that means you receive it or you
will do it.
You can accept something.
If you are looking for a job and someone wants to give you a job, you can say
yes to the job by accepting it.
You can say, "I accept your job offer." You can use this word in other ways.
I'm really sorry.
Please accept my apology.
And if someone accepts your apology, then they probably say...
You can say, "I accept your apology." Everything is OK.
Well friends, there's another key word we want you to accept and use today.
It is "invitation." If you get an invitation for something, that means someone
wants you to join them somewhere.
An invitation.
You can get an invitation to a party, an invitation to a wedding.
I always like to get an invitation in the mail.
And of course, if you want to say yes to an invitation, you accept the
invitation.
And it's nice to do that politely.
Well, here's my invitation.
I invite you to join us as we look at Conversation B.
Do you accept?
Excellent. We'll see you there.
Be nice but honest.
Thank her for the invitation, but tell her you're not really an opera fan.
So I shouldn't say, "I can't stand opera music"?
Right. Don't say that.
That's rude.
Be polite when you refuse an invitation.
Should I invite her to do something else another time?
Sure. People always like invitations to do things with friends.
But not when it's an invitation to an opera!
I think this is good advice from Lily.
Be nice but honest when you refuse an invitation.
Now when someone is honest, that means they are telling the truth.
"Honest" is a key word.
And if you are honest, that means you share how you really feel.
Thank you, Andrea, for being honest with us about this key word.
It's true. It's important to be honest.
And if someone asks you what you did, you should be honest with them.
Don't tell a lie.
Be honest.
"To be honest," you can use this phrase.
To be honest with you, I don't really like that.
Or to be honest with you, I don't really want to go.
Right. To be honest with you, I don't really like opera music.
Yeah.
So I'm going to refuse your invitation.
Another key word here is "refuse." And when you refuse an invitation, that means
you say no to the invitation.
You refuse. You say no.
But of course, when you refuse an invitation, do it politely.
Be polite. Do not be rude.
Well, what kinds of things do you refuse?
If someone asks you to do something bad, then of course you should refuse to do
that thing or to say something.
Refuse to do bad things.
Well, we hope that you don't refuse to learn more.
Please accept another invitation from us to look at our Read It.
Have you ever been invited to do something you didn't want to do?
Did you accept the invitation?
You can refuse politely.
Be honest, but be nice, too.
First, thank the person for the invitation.
Then tell him the reason you are refusing.
Instead of saying, "How boring," try, "I don't really enjoy that." Consider
inviting the person to do another activity with you.
Then he knows you still want to spend time with him!
Well, this is very important.
You want to let someone know that you still care about them.
Then they will know that you still want to spend time with them.
In this Read It paragraph, we saw some important words.
First, thank the person for the invitation.
Then tell him the reason you are refusing.
When you are telling a story, you can use these words.
Or if you're giving advice, you can use these words.
Andrea, can you maybe tell me what you do in the mornings?
Well, first, I wake up and I have some water.
Then I exercise. I go hiking.
Excellent! First, I do this.
Then I do this.
Last, I get ready for work, or I go to work.
You can use these words to share a story.
Right now it's time for us to continue with Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Whoa! Mr. Monkey Man, I want to invite you to the opera.
You want to invite me to the opera?
Yes. Please accept my invitation.
Well, I don't know. Opera is...
Opera is fun. Lalala...
Ginger, your singing is so loud.
I can sing even louder.
Listen. Lalala...
No... No, it's... it's loud enough already.
Oh, thank you.
So let's go to the opera together.
Hmm... No, thank you.
I'm not really a big fan of opera.
You're not?
No. I guess I'm not used to it.
Oh, no problem.
I can sing more.
Then you'll get used to it.
No, that's not a good idea.
Lalala...
Ginger, you can stop.
OK, friends, let's review our key words.
The first one is: accept.
accept.
Chris invited Mia to a fancy party and she accepted.
invitation.
invitation.
Did you get an invitation to Vickie's party?
politely.
politely.
You should always speak politely to your teachers.
honest.
honest.
You can believe what Ruth says. She's honest.
refuse.

Bob asked me to go to dinner with him, but I refused.
I said, "No, Bob. I won't go to dinner with you. I want to take a break." Let's
take a break right now.
