Lights.

Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone, my name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
And we are happy that you could join us for today's show.
We have a new lesson for you.
It is Carol's Birthday.
That's right.
Someone special is going to have a birthday.
Her name is Carol.
Well, when is your birthday?
What do you do when it's your friend's birthday?
Do you write a card for your friend?
Maybe you throw a party for that friend, or you give that friend a gift.
Maybe you'd like to keep it a surprise.
Do you remember the date of your friends' birthdays?
Well, card and party, gift, surprise, date - these are all of today's key words.
We'll talk about them and more.
So pay attention, open up your magazine, and let's begin.
(Music).
Hey, Ken!
Look at this!
What is it, Susie?
It's a card with Carol's birthday on it!
Really?
Where did you find the card?
It was on the floor.
It's a birthday card from a department store.
Why did a store send her a card?
The card is also a coupon.
Well, now the date of Carol's birthday isn't a secret!
I know!
Well, Susie found a card and it has some special information on it.
I think Susie thinks she knows when Carol's birthday is.
Well, friends, we do have a key word right here.
It is the word: card.
Now a card is something that you can write on.
It's a piece of paper.
Usually it has some special decorations or a picture, and you can write in a
card and give it to somebody.
In our conversation, we are talking about a birthday card.
And yes, you give people cards on special days like birthdays, or holidays like
Christmas and Easter.
Or you can just give someone a card to show them that you care about them.
I often write thank you cards to people if they do something special that I want
to thank them for.
That's a good idea.
A thank you card.
Well, do you ever write cards?
You can write cards for your friends or for your family members.
You can write cards for different people.
Now in this conversation, Ken thinks that he now knows the date of Carol's
birthday, that the date is not a secret anymore.
And date is our key word.
The date is a day.
There are 365 days every year.
What is today's date?
Today's date is September 17.
You can use this word in a question.
What date is your birthday?
Or what date do you leave on your vacation?
What date is your birthday?
Or save the date. There's a special day coming up soon.
Save the date.
That means: don't plan anything else on that day.
Well, Andrea, look at this. Look at the beginning of this conversation.
Susie said, hey, Ken, look at this!
Look at this! Yes!
That's a great thing to say when you want to show someone something.
Look at this.
It's a picture of my son.
Look at this! We have another conversation to look at.
Let's go now to Conversation B.
(Music).
We always ask her about her birthday.
But she never tells us the date.
Do you know the reason?
No.
Maybe she doesn't like birthday parties.
That's not the reason.
What is the reason?
She doesn't want gifts.
But everyone likes gifts!
I know.
She just doesn't want to bother us.
Ken thinks that maybe Carol doesn't like birthday parties.
Well, Susie says, "That's not the reason." So why does Carol want to keep her
birthday a secret?
Hmm.
Well, we don't know the reason right now, but we do know that there is a key
word to talk about.
It is party.
Now a party is a time to celebrate.
It is a time to celebrate.
Do you like parties?
Do you like to celebrate?
Well, I do.
But maybe Carol doesn't like parties.
Or maybe she just doesn't like to get gifts.
Right. Hmm. Most people like parties.
Yeah.
Most people like to get gifts.
Well, let's talk about this key word: gift.
A gift is something that you give to another person.
Maybe you buy someone a birthday gift, and you give it to that person on their
birthday.
Or maybe you have a gift you want to give someone on Christmas or another
special day.
You can give a gift anytime.
Actually, I like those gifts the best - the ones that are on another date, not
your birthday.
It's just a surprise - something you did not expect.
That's true.
It's nice to get a surprise gift.
Well, let's look at another part of our conversation.
In the end, Susie says, "I know. She just doesn't want to bother us." Hmm.
Susie thinks she knows the reason.
She thinks Carol just doesn't want to bother them.
Now when you bother someone, you do something that causes them trouble.
We often say, "I don't want to bother you." I don't want to cause you any
trouble, but can you help me with something?
I don't want to bother you, but I really need to talk to you about something.
And maybe they think that Carol will feel bothered if they have a party for her.
But back to that key word, party, you can use that word in different ways.
If you have a party or plan a party for someone, you can say you are throwing a
party.
T-H-R-O-W.
That's right.
You are throwing a party for someone.
And remember that the spelling of the word changes when you are talking about
two or more parties, like in our conversation.
One party, but two or more parties, P-A-R-T-I-E-S.
Well, we've learned a lot already.
Let's continue now with Conversation C.
(Music).
Well, now we know her birthday.
Let's surprise her with a party!
Good idea!
She's a great boss.
She needs a great party!
So when is her birthday?
The card says 10/12.
OK. October 12.
We have time.
We can plan a great party!
Let's plan it now!
Let's plan it now.
So Ken and Susie are going to start planning Carol's birthday party.
They want to surprise her.
That is the plan.
And surprise is our key word.
When you surprise someone, that means you do something that they did not expect.
They did not know you're going to do it.
You surprise that person.
Let's surprise Susie with a special gift.
She won't think we're going to buy her a gift.
So let's surprise her.
That's right.
Let's surprise her with a special gift.
Now this word can also be a noun.
You can surprise someone, or it can be a surprise.
The party will be a surprise.
Shh. Don't tell her about it.
Ah, well, this sounds like a great plan.
They are going to plan a surprise party for Carol.
So surprise can also be an adjective.
A surprise party, or a surprise plan.
That's right.
Now when is Carol's birthday?
Well, Susie says, "The card says 10/12." 10/12.
Well, that makes me think of October 12.
So I guess her birthday is on October 12.
And they are going to plan a great party.
Well, I'm pretty excited about this already.
I'm pretty excited about a surprise party.
Well, friends, right now it's no surprise.
We need to continue with Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Hurray! It's my birthday!
Ha, ha, ha, ha,ha!
Ginger, it's not your birthday.
Happy Birthday to me!
Ginger, your birthday was last month.
Yeah, last month and this month and next month.
I want a birthday every month.
No, you can only have one birthday every year.
You can't celebrate your birthday every month.
But birthdays are fun.
I want more birthdays.
You can't have more birthdays.
But I love parties.
Mmhm. Well, I'm sorry, Ginger.
One birthday a year is enough.
Well, maybe I can help my friends celebrate their birthdays.
That's a great idea!
Yeah, when's your birthday?
Is it today? Can you have one every month?
No.
Huh? What? Huh?
I'm not going to tell you.
Happy Birthday to you!
It's not my birthday.
(Music).
All right.
Let's review those key words.
The first one is card.
card.
It's your birthday!
Here's a birthday card for you!
date.

Today's date is September 17.
party.

Let's have a party for Kim on Saturday night.

Let's surprise Rachel.
We can give her a card!

It's no surprise that we are going to take a break rightnow.
