Let's Talk in English.
Hey, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
We have a new lesson just for all of you.
It is called: Be a Safe Driver.
Now are you a driver?
Do you drive a car, or do you ride a motorcycle or a scooter?
Well, if you drive something, you want to be safe.
You don't want to be too fast.
You don't want to talk on your cellphone while you are driving a car.
A safe driver stops at stop signs.
And safe drivers also make sure they always have their car keys or their scooter
keys.
Well, we want you to be a safe driver.
We want you to learn all about this today in English.
So please open your magazine and let's begin.
Hi, Susie. May I borrow your car?
Now? Where are you going?
I'm going to the dentist.
Your car is so fast!
Are you late?
I might be.
Maybe you can borrow my car.
But first I have a few questions.
OK!
Are you a good driver?
I am an excellent driver!
Get in my car, Gabe.
I am going to take you for a drive.
Oh, OK.
OK. Are you ready?
Uh, well, I am a little nervous, Andrea.
But... but I guess so.
Andrea, are you a good driver?
Well, of course I'm a good driver, Gabe.
Come on! Let's go.
OK. All right.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, Andrea, you're driving kind of fast.
Andrea! Andrea! Slow down, please.
Gabe, Gabe, it's a car.
A car goes fast.
It's fun to drive fast.
Andrea, no! Please stop! Stop! Andrea!
I can't take this anymore.
Gabe, get out of the car. Get out of the car. OK.
OK, thank you. Thank you.
Yes. OK.
Andrea, you are a fast driver.
Gabe, I am a good driver.
You don't have to be afraid.
You don't have to be nervous.
Cars go fast.
And I wasn't going too fast.
Well, let's talk about this key word.
fast.
Now if something goes fast, or if you are doing something fast, you are doing it
quickly.
You are not slow.
Your car is so fast.
Or: That runner is so fast.
That dog is so fast.
I don't think I can catch him.
Ken is fast, Tina is faster, but Bobby is the fastest.
So this word is an adjective.
You can add "er" or "est" when you want to talk about people or things who are
even faster.
Bobby is the fastest runner.
Well, I think I drive faster than Gabe.
He was a little worried about being in my car.
But he doesn't have to worry.
Gabe, you shouldn't worry because I am a good driver.
OK, OK, I trust you now.
You are a good driver.
But I'm glad I'm not in your car anymore.
OK, let's talk about this key word.
driver.
Now the driver of a car is the person who is in control of the car.
If you are the driver, that means you tell the car to go right or left.
If you are not the driver in a car, then you are a passenger.
So I was the driver in my car, and Gabe was the passenger.
Yes, "was." I was the passenger.
I'm glad I'm not the passenger anymore.
But I do trust that Andrea is a good driver.
Andrea, maybe you could, you know, make money by driving people places.
Well Gabe, I can drive you to Conversation B right now. OK, get in, get in.
OK, um, I'll be staying here.
Don't worry. I'm a good driver.
I'll stay right here.
I won't be too fast.
OK, let's go to Conversation B.
Do you have a driver's license?
I do.
Do you ever drive and talk on a cellphone?
No. That is not safe.
Do you stop at stop signs?
Do you stop at traffic lights?
Yes. I stop at stop signs.
And I stop at red lights.
In my car, you stop at yellow lights, too.
OK. I can do that.
Hmm, very interesting.
Yeah. You know, Gabe, it's fun to act like I'm driving here in the studio.
Yes. Well Andrea, you say you are a good driver.
I am a good driver.
Well, do you every drive and talk on your cellphone?
No, I don't drive and talk on my cellphone.
You should not drive and talk on your cellphone.
Oh. Well um, someone is calling right now, and they might be calling for you.
Andrea, can you talk on the cellphone, please?
Can you answer the call?
Oh. Well, sure. OK.
Andrea! You do drive and talk on the cellphone.
I knew it!
Andrea, that's not a good idea.
I'm still a good driver, Gabe.
And I think that we should talk about our key word - cellphone.
That is a good idea.
That's right, this key word is "cellphone." I'm sure you have one.
Or many of you have cellphones.
You can use a cellphone to talk to your friends.
And of course, you can take it anywhere.
Well, there are many different kinds of cellphones today.
Some are big, and some are small.
You can also just say, "cell." Do you have a cell I can borrow?
Or: I can't find my cell.
I can't find my cellphone.
And of course, when you are driving, you don't want to talk on your cellphone.
That's being a bad driver.
That's right, it's being a bad driver.
Now friends, there are different kinds of cellphones.
I have an old cellphone here.
But I also have a smartphone right here.
A smartphone is also a cellphone.
These are all different kinds of cellphones.
Well, can I have a cellphone... one of your cellphones, Gabe?
Well, you can hold onto my... dumb phone right here.
That's not my smartphone.
Your dumb phone or your old phone.
And of course, I will not talk on the phone while driving.
That is a good idea.
Well, we do have one more key word to look at here.
It is "stop." Susie says, "Do you stop at stop signs?" When you stop, that means
you are not going anymore.
You're driving, and then you stop so that you can look both ways before you keep
going.
A stop sign is usually a red sign with the word "STOP" in white letters.
So when you see a stop sign, you want to stop.
You don't want to keep driving.
And since I'm a good driver, I stop at stop signs.
That is good.
And friends, I think we need to stop right here and see what Conversation C has
for us.
Yeah.
How do you feel? Do you feel tired?
No, I feel fine.
Good. Tired people are not good drivers.
OK, well, maybe I can just take the bus.
No, here are my keys.
You can borrow my car.
Thanks, Susie!
You're welcome.
I care about you.
And you care about your car.
That's true. Be safe!
That's true. Be safe.
When you are a driver, when you are driving a car, be safe.
Or if someone you know is going to drive a car, you can tell them to be safe.
It's a way to show that person that you care about them.
Susie says, "I care about you." It shows that Amber means a lot to her.
She cares about her.
Gabe, I...I care about you.
Well, I care about you too, Andrea.
Andrea, I noticed you're not driving anymore.
Why aren't you driving?
Well, I'm not driving my car right now because I lost my keys.
I... I can't find my keys anywhere.
You don't have your keys?
Mmhm.
Well, that's OK.
Here, use my keys.
You can use these keys to drive your car.
Oh. Well Gabe, that's... that's very sweet of you.
But my car key is not on your key chain.
But we can use your keys to talk about our key word.
key.
You use a key to start something.
You use a car key to start your car.
But of course, you can also use keys to open things.
What do you open with your keys, Gabe?
Well, I open the door to my apartment.
And I need my apartment key so that I can get into my apartment.
Andrea, can I have my keys back?
You want your keys?
Yes.
Well sure, Gabe. You have many keys on your key chain.
Well, I need all of those keys.
One is for my scooter, two are for my apartment.
Andrea, I need my keys.
OK, here are your keys.
Don't lose them.
I won't lose them.
Now we're going to go and see Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Hey, I want to drive!
Ginger, you can't drive.
Yes, I can. I can drive.
No, you can't. You don't have a car.
I can drive. I can borrow your car.
Hey, you don't have a driver's license.
Yes, I can drive in the jungle without a license.
You can't drive.
Yes, I can drive.
I won't talk on my cellphone.
No, you can't drive.
And I'll stop at traffic lights.
You cannot drive.
I can drive.
I won't drive fast.
No.
I can drive. I can drive. I can drive.
You're right. You can drive.
I can?
Yeah, you can drive me crazy!
But you can't drive my car.
All right, everyone, it is time for us to practice today's key words together.
The first one is: fast.
fast.
This car is fast! I can get to your house in five minutes!
driver.
driver.
Jim is our driver. He can drive us to the park.
cellphone.
cellphone.
Don't talk on your cellphone in the doctor's office.
stop.
stop.
Please stop the car. I can get out here.
key.
key.
We need a key for the door. Then we can get in.
Good job reviewing those key words with us.
Well, now it's time to take a break.
But we will be rightback.
