That's a good question.
Remember High School?
Well, maybe you are in high school.
Hi.
Maybe you are in junior high, or younger and not in high school yet.
Or maybe you are in college or working.
Well, do you remember high school?
We have many things to learn about today about high school.
If you are in high school, maybe you are in the choir.
Maybe you have a biology class or a chemistry class.
Maybe you are in the drama club.
But high school, choir, biology, chemistry, drama and club?
What do these words mean?
Today you will find out.
Let's begin by opening up our magazines and starting with Conversation A.
Carol, do you remember high school?
Sure! Why do you ask, Susie?
I saw students going into the high school today.
So I thought about my high school years.
I think about high school sometimes.
What was your favorite class in high school?
I liked choir best!
I still love to sing.
(Music).
I liked biology class best.
I still love animals!
Well, I love animals too, especially cats.
They're the best.
Well, Susie and Carol are talking about their high school years here in
Conversation A.
Do you remember high school?
Maybe you are in high school right now.
You're not in junior high school anymore.
If you are in high school, you are probably between the ages of 14 and 18.
And maybe next year or later, you will go on to university.
I remember high school.
One thing I enjoyed about high school was being able to take classes that I
wanted to take.
I could take classes like math and science because I wanted to take them, not
because someone told me I had to.
That's right.
Well friends, are you in high school?
In some countries, high school can be four years.
I know that's the way it is in America.
What about you, Andrea?
How many years was your high school?
Well, my high school was five years.
But in some countries, high school is only three years.
Every country is different.
And where I live, people talk about senior high school.
But if you are talking about high school, or if you just say "I'm in high
school," I will know you mean senior high school.
Well, we have two more key words in this conversation.
choir.
If you are in choir, you like to sing.
There are other singers too.
And you sing songs together in choir.
Well, Carol shared that her favorite class in high school was choir.
And we know that Carol enjoys music.
Another class that we talk about in our conversation is biology.
Biology is a kind of science class.
In biology, you study more about plants and animals.
That's right. "Bio" means life.
So you study about different kinds of life in biology class.
Well, we're learning a lot here on Let's Talk in English.

I liked most of my high school classes.

I even liked chemistry!

Really! I did!
I liked drama class.
I joined the drama club.
Being in school plays was fun.
High school was fun.

Now I am going to be your chemistry teacher.
And I am from the biology club at school.
I have a little elephant here.
Oh. OK, I guess biology is also a science.
Chemistry is also a science.
Now let's talk about this key word together.
chemistry.
Now in chemistry class, you learn about very small things that are in the world.
You learn about chemicals and minerals and other things that are not easy to
learn and not easy to talk about.
But chemistry class is interesting.
Would you agree, Gabe?
I would agree.
In chemistry class, I learned that water is also called H2O.
You learn those kinds of things in chemistry class.
Isn't that right, dear Edwina?
OK. Well, Gabe is here from the biology club.
Mmhm.
"Club" is also a key word.
Now a club is not a class.
A club is something that you go to to learn, but also just to have fun.
It's not as serious as being in a class like chemistry class.
Now what kinds of clubs do you have at your school?
Well, maybe you are in a band or some kind of a music club.
What other clubs are at your school?
Well, maybe you have a drama club at your school.
Now Gabe, you enjoy drama.
Can you do a little drama for us?
I do enjoy drama.
To be, or not to be?
That is the question.
Right, Edwina?
Yes.

Yes, in drama class, you learn how to act.
You learn how to perform.
You learn how to move the right way on the stage.
You know, I think I would do well in drama class.

Almost everyone goes to high school.
Students study English and a foreign language.
They take science classes, too, like biology or chemistry.
Students can also choose classes to take.
High schools give them lots of choices.
They offer music classes, computer classes, drama classes and art classes, too.
Students also enjoy many activities in high school.
Some play sports.
Others join clubs.
Many students enjoy high school a lot.

I know sometimes it can be difficult.
But it's good to try and enjoy whatever it is you're doing.
And as we found out, almost everyone goes to high school.
Almost everyone does something.
That means not everybody, but nearly everyone.
You can use this sentence in another way.
Almost everyone enjoys listening to music.
Almost everyone knows that famous actor.
Almost everyone loves to eat chocolate.
That's true!
Almost everyone enjoys learning English.
Almost everyone knows that it's almost time for us to continue.
