Lights.

Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everybody.
We're glad you joined us again today.
My name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
We have been talking about office supplies.
Now we want to jump over to the subject of school.
Today's lesson is called Junior High School.
Are you a junior high school student?
Yes? Well, great.
Today's lesson is just for you.
And if you're not a junior high school student, that's OK.
There are still many things to learn.
What subject is your favorite?
I hope you get to study that subject this year.
How many classes will you have?
Do you like science or math or history?
What do these words mean?
Junior high school, class, favorite, science?
These are some of today's key words.
We have lots to learn.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
Hi, Lily! Did you see all the kids on the street?
Is today the first day of school?
Yes, it is.
My younger sister starts junior high school today.
Great! Is she excited?
Yes and no.
She is excited about a new school year.
But she is not excited about homework.
I remember that.
You have a lot of homework in junior high school.
Well, in this conversation, we found out that Lily's younger sister is starting
junior high school today.
That's right. We see some key words right there.
The first one is "start." When you start something, that means you begin.
You're not ending.
It's at the beginning.
You are starting something.
What time does school start?
School starts at 8:00.
You can ask a question.
What time does the party start?
I'm excited about the party.
When does it start?
The party starts at 8:00.
And some people say don't start something that you can't finish.
So if you can't finish something, then don't even start.
And we found out that Lily's younger sister starts.
Lily's younger sister starts...
Yeah.
Uh, Gabe, you just started a sentence.
Yeah.
But you didn't finish it.
You can't start a sentence and not finish it.
You're right!
That is good advice.
Don't start something that you can't finish.
Here is the correct sentence.
Lily's younger sister starts junior high school today.
That's the whole sentence.
I finished it.
Well, I'm glad you finished it.
And we can start looking at these key words together.
junior high school.
Maybe you are a junior high student.
Do you study in junior high school?
You go to junior high school when you are about 12 years old.
You go there before you go to high school.
Do you enjoy junior high school?
Do you enjoy being a junior high student?
Or maybe you're not in junior high school anymore.
Did you enjoy junior high school?
Well, we found out later that Lily's sister is excited, and she also has other
feelings.
Rob says, "Is she excited?" Lily said, "Yes and no." This is a good answer.
Sometimes you need to answer this way.
Hey, Andrea, I lent you that DVD.
Did you watch it?
Yes.
Uh, now did you like the DVD?
Well, yes and no.
Hmm?
Well, the movie was good.
I liked it.
So yes, it was good.
But it was too long.
So no, it wasn't the best movie.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
I'm sorry. Well, can you return it to me then?
Well, sure. I'll give it back to you.
Oh, great.
Friends, we have more to learn in Conversation B.
Is that right?
Yes and no?
No! Just yes.
Yes, of course we have more to learn right now.
Junior high school is also fun.
You meet lots of new friends.
And you have a lot of different teachers.
Yes. In junior high, you have a different teacher for every class.
I liked my classes in junior high.
They were interesting.
What was your favorite class?
I liked history and English.
I agree with Lily.
Junior high school is fun.
I loved junior high school.
I like thinking about my time in junior high school.
I made a lot of great friends.
Well hey, Gabe, did you like junior high school?
Well, yes and no.
You see, yes, I liked my friends in junior high school.
But no, I thought the classes were a little more difficult than in elementary
school.
Well, that's true.
Classes do become a little more difficult.
But usually, you have a different teacher for every class.
And it's fun to have more teachers.
Well, let's look at this key word.
class.
If you are a student, then you are in a class with other students.
A teacher teaches a class.
Now maybe you have an English class or a math class.
There are different kinds of classes.
And how many people are in your classes?
Can you count them?
How many people are in your English class?
Or what is your favorite class?
Can you talk about it in English?
Well, you just used one of my favorite words in that question.
Let's talk about it.
favorite.
Rob asks, "What was your favorite class?" That's the same as asking: Which class
did you like best?
When something is your favorite, it's what you like best.
So Gabe, what is your favorite color?
Hmm, my favorite color, the one I like the best, is green.
OK. What is your favorite dessert?
My favorite dessert is called "peach cobbler." Andrea, what is your favorite
flavor of ice cream?
My favorite flavor of ice cream is chocolate and peanut butter.
Mmm, it is so good!
And today my favorite conversation is Conversation C.
I think it will be one of your favorites as well.
Here we go.
My favorite class was science.
I didn't like science class.
I didn't like my teacher.
Why not?
She was strict. We had a lot of homework.
That's too bad.
Well, tomorrow's guest is a junior high school teacher.
She is a very good teacher, too.
Really? Who is it?
Ms. Alice Martin.
Ms. Martin?
Oh, no!
Ms. Martin will be here tomorrow.
I think she was a strict teacher.
Do you have any strict teachers?
Andrea, can you answer my question?
Do you have any strict teachers?
Well, I... I don't have any strict teachers right now.
But I did have some strict teachers.
Yes, of course.
Now, did you do all of of your homework on time every day?
Well, not every day.
I tried to do my homework on time.
Andrea, what was your favorite class in junior high school?
My favorite class was music class.
Gabe, why are you being such a strict teacher now?
Well, it's very important.
If I want to get things done and teach correctly, I need to be strict.
Now answer me this.
What does the word "science" mean?
Well, science is a class.
In science class, you learn about plants and animals in the world.
In science class, you do interesting things to learn about life.
Once I cut open a dead frog in science class just to learn about what was inside
that frog.
Andrea, that was a good story.
But there's only one problem, and that is you were smiling too much.
I'm just kidding.
I don't want to be a strict teacher anymore.
You can share a story however you like.
Be free to share however you like.
And we are free to go right now to enjoy Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Why are you so excited today, Ginger?
Today is the first day of school.
Oh, you're excited about school.
Yeah, kids meet new friends.
They have new teachers.
That's true. But...
Kids have interesting classes, like history and English.
That's true. But...
And kids have a lot of homework.
That's true, Ginger. But...
Hooray! Today is the first day of school.
But school is for kids; it's not for monkeys.
Yeah. So I can go to the park, and it won't be crowded.
OK, you go to the park.
Yeah, kids will be in school.
You can jump.
OK, now let's review our key words.
They start with the word: start.

Work starts at 8:00. Don't be late!
junior high school.
