Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone. My name is Andrea.
And I am Gabe.
Welcome to LTE TV, the show where you can learn English, and also learn about
traveling.
That's right, we've been talking about traveling by taking a bus, taking the
train.
And today the lesson is called: Traveling by Car.
That's right, driving a car.
Or maybe you're a passenger in a car.
Maybe you have a travel partner.
And you like to explore the highways.
Maybe you need to stop for gas every once in a while.
And it's important to have a map.
Well, whether you're here for the first time, or whether you watch Let's Talk in
English all the time,
there is something new to learn every day.
So get out your magazine, and let's go to Conversation A and begin.
Hello, friends, welcome to Let's Talk!
Our guest for today is Mr. Dale Driver.
Tell us about your book, Mr. Driver.
It's called Road Trips.
It has tips to help people plan great road trips.
You've taken a lot of road trips, haven't you?
Of course!
I've driven on small roads and highways all over the country!
What do you like about road trips?
You can choose what to explore.
Whether you stop often or just for gas, you decide!
Tell us about your book, Mr. Driver.
Tell us about something.
Tell us about your trip.
Tell us about your time with your friends.
Tell us about something.
This is a good phrase to know.
Now Mr. Driver's book is called Road Trips.
And what do we find out about Mr. Driver?
Andrea, has Mr. Driver driven a lot?
Yes, he has.
He has driven on small roads and highways all over the country.
That's right, he's driven on small roads and big highways all over the country.
Friends, "highway" is a key word.
What is a highway?
Well, it's a big road that you can travel on.
It's not a small road within a city.
A highway usually connects cities.
And the speed that cars can drive on a highway is also faster than regular
roads.
So a highway might have a name.
But usually it has a number, like Highway 74 or Highway 68.
There are different numbers for highways.
Well friends, we do have other key words here that we want to explore.
One of them is the word "explore." When you explore something, that means you
are trying to find out more about it.
When you explore a place, that means you don't know it yet, but you want to find
out what is around.
You are exploring somewhere new.
I enjoy exploring new cities and new places.
One thing that we find out is that when you take a road trip, you can choose
what to explore.
That's right.
If you see something that is interesting, if you say I want to explore this,
you can just stop your car and look around and explore a new area.
Mr. Driver says, "Whether you stop often or just for gas, you decide!" That's
what he likes about road trips.
Whether you do this or that.
"Whether" is a key word.
And you can use it like this:
Whether it rains or not, we will have a picnic today.
Whether you study a lot or not, we will have the test tomorrow.
Oh, so you'd better study well.
Well, we do have another key word.
It is: gas.
Gas is very important for your car.
If you are driving a car, most cars do need gas.
You need to go to a gas station and get more gas.
So we see this word "station" again.
A gas station is a place that you can stop and get gas for your car.
Well, we aren't going to stop learning right now.
No, no, no.
It is time to continue with Conversation B.
Is traveling by car better than traveling by airplane or train?
Traveling by car isn't better; it's just different.
Airplanes and trains are often faster.
But road trips can be cheaper!
What do you need for a road trip besides a car?
You need gas, of course.
A map is helpful too.
And a traveling partner is always fun!
I like Mr. Driver's answer to the question.
Is traveling by car better than traveling by airplane or train?
Mr. Driver says traveling by car isn't better; it's just different.
And I agree with that.
It doesn't matter how you travel.
You choose the best way for you.
And of course, we get some tips to help make road trips even better.
A map is helpful.
Let's talk about this key word.
map.
Now when you are driving, a map can help you get from one place to another
place.
A map of a city includes all the places in that city, the names of roads,
and the names of important places that you might want to stop at or visit.
So that's a city map.
Of course, you could have a country map.
Also, you don't need a map just for when you're driving.
What if you go to the zoo and you want to know where everything is?
You can use a map and walk from one place to another.
Or amusement parks often have maps as well.
You can find out where your favorite ride is, and then go there to ride the
amusement park rides.
Yeah. So maps are very helpful.
Our other key word here is "partner." A traveling partner is always fun.
A partner is someone who does something with you.
So if you have a traveling partner, that person is traveling with you.
A teaching partner is always fun.
And I have a very good teaching partner with me here today.
Her name is Andrea.
Well, thank you, Gabe.
You are also a fantastic teaching partner.
Well, thank you. I know.
I mean uh, thank you.
Now let's continue, Andrea, us good teaching partners.
We're going to continue enjoying today's lesson with our Read It right now.
Whether you drive on a big highway or small roads, traveling by car can be fun.
If you see an interesting place, you can stop, explore and take pictures.
Or if you get hungry you can stop and eat anywhere!
Traveling by car can take longer than traveling by train or airplane.
But if you have your own car, road trips can be cheaper.
Then all you need is gas, a map and some traveling partners!
Well, whether you are traveling far or traveling somewhere close by,
whether you are using a highway or just driving on small roads in your city, it
is nice to have a partner.
It's nice to have a friend close by. Isn't that right, Andrea?
Oh. Andrea?
My partner is not with me right now.
Well friends, I think we need to continue learning something with the Monkey Man
and Ginger.
They're good partners.
I want to take a road trip.
A road trip? Why?
We can explore.
We can stop many different places.
Hmm. Well, that's true.
I can choose where to stop.
Yeah, as long as you stop for gas.
Well, airplanes and trains are faster.
Yeah. But driving is cheaper.
It's better.
Hmm, sometimes it's better.
Yeah. Please, please, let's take a road trip!
OK, OK, let's see.
I need gas and a map and a traveling partner.
Hey, I'm your traveling partner.
Let's go! Let's go!
Good idea! It's time to go.
Ooh.
Goodbye.
We're going.
Where do you want to go first?
Let's review our key words, friends.
The first one is: highway.
Say it again.
