Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everybody. Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Gabe.
And I am Andrea.
And we are very glad that you joined us.
Today we are going to continue talking about the phone,
talking about ways that you can be polite or use good phone manners when using
the phone.
The title of our lesson today is a question:
Can I Take a Message?
Can I Take a Message?
Now this is a question that you might use when you are on the phone with another
person.
Well Gabe, let's... let's show them how we would use this, OK?
I'm going to call.
OK, yes. Mmhm, I'll answer the phone.
Hi. Is Larry there?
Uh no, I'm sorry. This is Gabriel.
But um, Larry is not here.
Can I take a message, Andrea?
Well, yes. Please tell Larry that Andrea called.
I will certainly let him know.
Good. Thank you. Bye-bye.
Bye-bye. Bye-bye.
OK. Well, I hope that gets you excited about today's lesson.
So let's begin.
Hi, Rob.
Hi, Susie. How are you?
I'm good.
Someone called for you.
Here's his message.
Did you try to transfer the call?
Yes, but you weren't at your desk.
So I took a message.
Thanks, Susie.
Oh, no. It was Mr. Pits!
Did he yell at you?
Yes. He said some rude things about the show.
Well, that's interesting.
Now who called for Rob?
Mr. Pits called for Rob.
Hmm, I guess Mr. Pits can be kind of rude, right?
Yeah, he can be a little rude, Andrea.
Well, why didn't Susie transfer the call to Rob?
Because Rob was not at his desk.
So Susie took a message.
Ah, she took a message.
"Message" is a key word.
Now when you take a message for someone, that means you write down important
information for that person.
If someone tries to call your office for a person who isn't there, you can take
a message.
A mesage usually includes the person's name, their phone number, and why they
are calling.
So you can take a message for someone.
You can write down what the person wants to say.
You can take a message.
Or maybe you are calling to talk to somebody, but they are not there.
You can say, "Oh. Well, can I leave a message?" That means you want to give the
person a message.
Can I take a message for you?
Or, can I leave a message for my friend?
Can I take a message?
Can I leave a message?
Sometimes you might record a message on someone's phone or a special machine.
And that way they can listen to the message later.
Well, we have more to talk about together.
Let's continue with Conversation B.
And you had to listen to him.
I'm sorry, Susie.
Thanks for the message.
You're welcome.
When he yelled, I just tried to stay calm.
That's not easy.
Mr. Pits often calls and complains about our show.
I don't understand.
Why did he call my number?
I don't know.
Maybe he made a mistake.
I can't believe it, Andrea.
I can't believe you don't have my phone number.
Uh, Gabe, it's OK.
I... I don't need your phone number. I see you everyday...
How long have we been friends?
We've been friends for a long time.
I have your phone number, and you don't have mine.
OK. Well, then you can call me, Gabe.
Just stay calm. Stay calm. It's OK.
Why should I stay calm?
It doesn't matter.
We've been friends for a long time, and you don't have my phone number.
I'm hurt!
Well, don't be hurt, Gabe.
Just stay calm, OK?
I'll stay calm.
And sure, I... I'll call you.
And then you can have my phone number then.
Well, anyway, I guess I do need to stay calm.
And Andrea, maybe you can talk about this key word.
OK, I will.
I'll let you just uh, learn to be calm while I talk about it.
Now when someone is calm, that means they are not angry.
They are not worried about anything.
They are relaxed and they are calm.
It's nice to be around calm people.
Yes, it is nice to be around calm people.
I like when the weather is calm too.
If there is a storm, it's not calm.
But if it's a nice day out and it's not too windy, it's a calm day.
Yes.
So if somebody is getting a little angry or upset,
you might just want to say, "Stay calm. Everything will be OK." Now let's look
at our next key word.
It is: number.
Now everyone has a phone number.
You might have a cell phone number and a home phone number.
These are the numbers people need to dial to make a call to you.
And Andrea does not have my phone number.
That's OK. She will soon.
Well friends, it's time for us to continue with Conversation C.
Here we go.
Are you happy about that?
Yes! I didn't have to talk to Mr. Pits!
But you need to call him back.
I told him, "Rob will call you back as soon as possible.".
Oh, you're right. That would be polite.
You should call him now.
OK, OK. I'll call him back!
Thanks for calling me back, Andrea.
You're welcome.
I wanted to call as soon as possible.
That's good.
And now you have my number.
Yes. Yes, I do. Thank you.
Yes, you're very, very welcome, and very polite too, Andrea.
Thank you, Gabe.
Well, I should say goodbye.
And we should teach our key words.
Yes, yes, yes, we should.
OK?
OK, goodbye.
Goodbye.
All right, I'm glad that Gabe and I are OK now and we can talk about our key
words.
call back.
call back.
Now when you call someone back or call back, you call someone who called you but
you couldn't answer the call for some reason.
Or maybe someone gave you a message.
That's right. You can ask this question:
Can I call you back?
Maybe you don't have time to talk on the phone.
I'm sorry. Can I call you back later?
That means you will call the other person later.
And if you get a message that says you should call a person back, you want to do
it as soon as possible.
You don't want the person to wait a long time.
as soon as possible or ASAP.
When you do something as soon as possible, you do it as soon as you have a
chance.
That's right, whenever it is possible, whenever you can.
as soon as possible.
Of course, the easy way to remember this is ASAP.
You'll never forget that.
That's right.
Our last key word here is "polite." Now when you are polite, you have good
manners.
You use kind words when you talk to people.
You say "please" and "thank you." You stay calm and you are not rude.
And if you are polite, you are not rude.
You are not impolite.
The opposite of "polite" is "impolite," I-M-P-O-L-I-T-E.
Don't be impolite.
Be a polite person.
Well, I hope you are a polite person.
Now let's go to hear what our friends have to say... The Monkey Man and Ginger.
You got a call.
I took a message.
You have a message?
Yeah, it's right here.
OK, let me see it.
Oh, it says...
Oops! Sorry. I forgot to write in English.
Yeah. So what is the message?
In English.
Oh. Yeah.
It says: Call me right away. It's important.
OK. Who called?
Mr. Asap.
Asap?
Yeah. He said: It's important. Call Asap.
Uh... Are you sure Mr. Asap called?
Yeah, he spelled his name. A-S-A-P.
Oh, that's not his name.
Call ASAP means call as soon as possible.
Oh. Well, I guess calling soon is not possible.
You don't know who called.
It's time to review our key words together.
The first one is: message.
message.
Tim called for you. Here is a message from him.
calm.
calm.
Nancy is usually very calm. She doesn't get angry often.
number.
number.
I want to call Ella. What is her phone number?
call back.
call back.
Harry called earlier. Can you call him back now?
as soon as possible.
Or you can just say ASAP.
as soon as possible.
ASAP.
I can't talk now, but I will talk to you as soon as possible.
polite.
polite.
Jim is very polite. He has great manners.
It's important to be polite.
Right now it's important for us to take abreak.
