Lights.
Camera.
Let's Talk in English.
Yes!
Yes. Welcome, everybody, to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
We're glad you joined us again today.
Today we are talking about the library.
Shh. We don't want to be very loud when we are in a library.
But we are not in a library.
We're just talking about a library, so that's OK.
Now why do you go to a library?
People often borrow books at a library.
And when you are finished with the book you borrowed, you need to return the
book.
It's fun to go to a library and check out a new book.
But don't forget your library card.
Well, you will hear these key words and more in today's lesson.
So let's begin.
Hi, Lily. Why do you have those books?
These are library books.
I'm going to the library now.
You also have a DVD.
Did you borrow that from the library too?
Yes, I did!
I watched this DVD last night.
Did you read all the books too?
No. I only read one of them.
Welcome back.
Now you just watched and listened to Conversation A.
And let's take a look at it together.
At the beginning of our conversation, Ken says, "Hi, Lily. Why do you have those
books?" Now he sees Lily with some books.
And he wants to know why she has them.
So he asks the question: Why do you have those books?
Well, let's use this question in another way.
Why do you have that umbrella?
It's not raining today.
Why do you have those bags?
Did you go shopping?
Why do you have that picnic basket?
Are you going out for a picnic today?
Why do you have those books?
Well, Lily says: These are library books. I'm going to the library now.
Hmm. So she has library books.
She's going to the library.
But she also has something else.
She has a DVD.
We see another question.
Rob says... Or, I'm sorry.
Ken says: Did you borrow that from the library too?
Did you borrow that?
Well, "borrow" is a key word.
If you borrow something, that means you have it for a little while, but then you
will give it back to someone or to the library.
That's right.
The library has books and DVDs, even magazines that you can borrow.
But you can't keep them for a long time.
You can keep them for a short time.
And then you have to give them back again.
Now you might use this word in another question.
If you need to use something that a friend has, you can say, "Can I borrow
something?" Um, Gabe, I don't have a pen.
Can I borrow your pen?
Oh, Andrea, you know I always have a pen.
Yes, you can borrow the pen.
But you must return it to me later.
OK, I will. I will just borrow it for a short time.
Very nice.
Well um, what are you doing with it right now?
Uh... Well, I was just going to look at what is in Conversation B, and what we
can maybe talk about.
Oh.
Just going to write down a few things...
Oh, good. Hey, let's go to Conversation B right now, friends.
Here we go.
I see. Are those books due today?
Yes! So I must return them today.
Do you often check out books from the library?
Not too often.
Do you like audio books?
You can get those at the library too.
That's a good idea. Then I can listen to books!
Well, we found out here that Lily's books are due back at the library today.
They are due.
The due date is the day when you should return something to the library.
The due date.
Well, we do have a key word here.
It is: return.
return.
But Andrea, we just learned the key word "return" yesterday.
Yes. But yesterday we were talking about shopping.
OK.
And if you buy something, but you don't like it or there's a problem, you can
return it to the store.
Well, hopefully you can return it to the store.
Here we are talking about returning something that you borrowed.
OK. So one is returning something and you get your money back.
But if you return a book or DVD to the library, you don't get any money back.
You just give the book back.
You return the book.
We use the same word.
And you want to make sure that you return your library books the day they are
due, or before the day they are due.
Or else, you might have to pay some money.
That's right, you might have to pay a fine.
That money is called a fine, F-I-N-E.
And you don't feel fine when you have to pay a fine.
Well friends, we do feel fine because we have another key word here.
Actually, two words.
check out.
When you check out something from the library, that means you are going to
borrow that thing.
You check out books from the library.
You can check out a DVD.
Or in Conversation B, we also learned about audio books.
You can check out audio books at the library.
That's right, audio books.
I like audio books.
Do you ever listen to audio books, Andrea?
I do listen to audio books sometimes.
I enjoy listening to them if I'm driving somewhere for a long time.
It's nice to listen to a book.
That's right.
I know some friends who like to listen to audio books when they are running.
And they have the audio book downloaded on their MP3.
So you can download many things, an audio book is one of them.
That is true.
Um, Gabe, we talked about borrowing things.
Yes.
And you were so kind to let me borrow your pen.
Yes.
But I think I should probably return it to you.
It's a good thing too because today is the due date.
Actually, this minute is the due minute.
Right now?
Yeah, right now.
Well, I'd better return it. There.
Thank you, because I don't want you have to pay a fine of $50.
Why would I pay a fine of $50, Gabe?
Because I like $50.
Oh. OK, I'm just glad that I returned my pen.
And I... I don't think I will be borrowing the pen again.
It's a very, very nice pen.
Well, we do have a very nice conversation coming up - Conversation C.
Many libraries lend magazines too.
That's true. But I usually buy magazines.
I usually buy e-books.
You can check out e-books from libraries.
I know. But I don't have a library card.
Get one soon! It's free!
Then you can borrow lots of e-books.
OK. I can go to the library with you now.
Good! Then we can both borrow some books!
Yes, I think that Ken should get a library card.
I have a library card.
And I often use it when I borrow books and DVDs or other things from the
library.
Hey, Gabe, do you have a library card?
No. Actually, I was wondering if maybe I could borrow your library card?
You want to borrow my library card?
Yeah, can I borrow your card?
No. No, you can't do that.
What?
But you can get your own library card.
I know. Andrea, I'll give you this pen if you let me borrow your library card.
I don't want your pen.
But I do want to look at our key word.
It is: card.
card.
Now a library card is what you need to take books out of the library, to check
out books, and to return them again.
So this is one kind of card, a library card.
Yes, that's one kind of card.
Another kind of card is uh, maybe... maybe a Costco card.
Do you like to shop at Costco?
Well, you need a Costco card to shop there.
And other big stores like that often take cards.
You have to have a card to shop there.
Do you have a name card?
When you meet someone new, they might give you their name card.
It has their name and contact information on the card.
And it might also tell you a bit about their job.
Well, we see another key word that we'd like to talk about.
It is: lend.
Many libraries lend magazines too.
Now let's look at the difference between the two key words "borrow" and "lend."
When you borrow something from another person,
you take it for a short time.
But the person who lets you borrow it lends it to you.
So earlier today I lent Andrea this pen.
L-E-N-T.
I lent her this pen.
Oh, you did. Thank you for lending me your pen.
Well Gabe, I can't let you borrow my library card.
But I can let you borrow some money.
Yes! Even better!
But if I lend you this money, you must pay me back.
You must return the money soon.
Of course. Of course I will pay you back.
I will return the money.
Thank you for letting me borrow this money.
Ooh, I like money.
I lent Gabe some money.
He's borrowing money from me.
But he will return the money soon.
Now let's go enjoy some Jungle Chitchat.
Ginger, you have a lot of books.
Yes, I like books.
Well, I like books too.
Can I borrow a book?
Of course.
You can borrow a book... from the library.
What?
Yeah, you can check out books and DVDs.
Yes, I know. But...
You can also borrow audio books and e-books.
I know that. But I...
And the library will lend you magazines too.
Ginger, I know that.
But I want to borrow a book from you.
Why?
Well, because I don't have to return it on time.
Hey!
Now I like this book here...
Please say today's key words with us.
It's a great way to practice.
borrow.
borrow.
Heather borrowed a pencil from Tammy.
return.
return.
Please return these books at the end of the month.
check out.
check out.
Wendy checked out three books from the library.
lend.
lend.
Can you lend me a dollar?
card.
card.
You can check out books with a library card.
Great job!
Now you can take a break.
