Lights.
Camera.
Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone. My name is Andrea.
And I am Gabe.
Welcome to LTE TV.
As always, we have a good lesson for you today.
Today's lesson is called: Online Auctions.
That's right, Online Auctions.
I know you don't use this word "auction" very often.
It's a time and place where you can buy something at a price.
Now you could get a good deal at an auction.
There could be auctions online at a website.
What kinds of auctions are there?
Well, deal, website, kind.
These are some of our key words from today's lesson.
Let's listen for them and more as we begin.
Open your magazine.
And let's get started with Conversation A.
Hey, Ken, do you ever buy used things online?
Sure, Susie. I love to get good deals.
I love good deals too.
Which website should I use?
There are lots of websites.
I know!
Do you ever use auction websites?
Sometimes. How about you?
I never have, but I want to try.
What are you shopping for?
An MP3 player.
And this package is here.
I'm selling this package.
Do I have a buyer? Anybody?
Yes?
I'll buy it.
Yes, we're starting at $20.
OK, $20.
$20. Do I have $30?
Does anyone want to bid $30?
Yes, right over there. I see.
And $40?
Ah, over here. $40. Excellent!
Do we have another? $50?
Oh, $50.
$50 right here.
Anybody else?
$50. $50 going once. Going twice. And sold!
Yes!
Sold to you, Andrea.
Oh, thank you.
There's your package.
This is exciting. I wonder what's inside.
Gabe...
Yes?
There is nothing inside.
It is an empty box.
Well, I told you it was a package.
And it's a beautiful empty box.
That's a good deal.
I think it is a good deal.
So I'll just keep my money.
Thank you very much.
That's not a good deal.
But friends, the key word here is: deal.
A deal is how much you spend on something.
If it's a good deal, that means it was not too expensive.
That's right.
I like to find good deals when I shop.
I find deals when I shop online, or when I go to sales as well.
But today I did not get a good deal from Gabe.
I'm just glad I didn't give him my money.
That's true.
Well friends, we do have another key word here.
It is: website.
Now some websites allow you to buy things, like auction websites.
A website is a page online.
If you go on the Internet, you will go to visit different websites.
And we hope you take time to visit our website at www.StudioClassroom.com.
And Susie's question today is: Do you ever use auction websites?
Andrea and I were just doing an auction.
People usually speak very quickly at auctions.
They want to see who will pay the most money for something.
That's what an auction is.
And at an online auction, you type in the price that you want to pay.
If nobody types in a higher price, well then you are the winner.
And Susie wants to buy an MP3 player.
Well, let's see what we can find out in Conversation B.
Let's look at this website.
You can bid on things here.
OK. This is exciting!
So we're on the site.
Which kind of MP3 player do you want?
I want this kind.
OK, now we look for the best deal.
Some players are new, and some are used.
Some sellers offer free shipping.
A used one is OK.
And I like free shipping!
When you bid on something at an online auction, that means you say you want to
buy it.
When you bid, you type in how much money you want to pay.
Well, what does Susie want to bid on?
She wants to bid on an MP3 player.
So Ken says: Which kind of MP3 player do you want?
Which kind of MP3 player do you want?
Our key word is "kind." Now when we talk about a kind of something,
we are talking about a group of things, but part of it.
For example, what kind of fruit do you like to eat, Gabe?
What kind of fruit I like to eat?
Mangos and strawberries.
That's my favorite kind of fruit.
Andrea, what kind of restaurant do you like to go to?
I like to go to Chinese restaurants.
There are many different kinds of restaurants, many different kinds of fruit,
and many different kinds of MP3 players.
Well, we have another key word to look at.
It is: seller.
When you are on an online auction website, different sellers sell different
things.
You can find a seller, and then look at the deals that they have for you.
A seller is different from a salesman.
If you want to buy a new car, you will talk to a salesman.
That's his job all the time.
But a seller is someone who might sell something every once in a while, but it's
not their main job.
That is true.
Well, we are going to continue learning now with Conversation C.
Here's a used MP3 player for $20 with free shipping.
Do you want to bid on it?
Sure.
What is your maximum price?
I'd pay $30.
OK. I'll type in $30, but you'll only pay $20 if no one else bids.
Great! What if I want to return it?
Most sellers allow you to return things.
This one does.
Just check their information.
OK! Thanks, Ken!
Well, we found out that Susie's maximum price for this MP3 player is $30.
That's the maximum amount she will pay.
"Maximum" is a key word.
The maximum is the most of something.
What's the maximum price?
$30.
The maximum number of students in each class at the school is 30 students.
Thirty is the maximum.
The maximum.
Now the opposite of this word is "minimum." That's the lowest.
M-I-N-I-M-U-M, the minimum.
Now if you see these letters "MAX.", you know it's talking about the maximum of
something.
And if you see "MIN.", well then it's talking about the minimum.
That's right.
Well, we do have one more key word here.
Let's say it together.
return.
If you buy something but you don't want it for some reason, then you can return
it.
You give it back, and they give your money back to you.
return.
Well, the seller that Susie is looking at allows returns.
That can be a good thing.
Now let's go enjoy some Chitchat at the Jungle Cafe.
Hey, Ginger, what are you doing online?
I'm looking at auction websites.
I love to get good deals.
Oh. So what are you looking for?
Good deals.
No. I mean, what do you want to buy?
Do you want to buy a camera, a watch, an MP3 player?
No, I want to buy bananas.
I knew it.
Uh, Ginger, you can't bid on bananas.
Oh, too bad!
But if you want to buy a camera, a watch or an MP3 player, you can get some good
deals.
OK.
OK. OK what?
OK, I'll bid on a camera, a watch and an MP3 player.
Ginger...
I love to get good deals.
All right, friends, let's review our key words.
The first one is: deal.
deal.
If you buy one CD, you get another one free. That's a good deal!
website.
Or, site.
website.
Or just site.
Do you have your computer here? I can show you my new website.
kind.
kind.
What kind of cake do you like?
seller.
seller.
This seller has a good price on TVs. Let's buy one from him!
maximum.
maximum.
Only 50 people can ride this bus. That's the maximum number.
return.
return.
This shirt is too small, so I need to return it to the store.
And now we need to take abreak.
