Let's Talk...
In English.
Hey, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
We're so glad you joined us again.
It's a new week of learning together.
And today we are going to learn about yard sales.
Yard sales can be fun.
We are going to learn words that you can use to talk about yard sales and many
other things as well.
Now yard sales are fun because you can usually buy things for a cheaper price.
Things don't cost a lot at a yard sale.
Now how do you know when there's a yard sale?
Well, usually you see a big sign in front of someone's house or on their yard to
let you know.
So please open today's magazine to find today's lesson.
You'll see all of our key words there.
You'll see them all in today's conversations.
So let's begin.
Hi, Lily. What are you reading about?
Oh, hi, Susie.
I'm looking for yard sales in the newspaper.
Do you often go to yard sales?
No, but I want a few more things for my apartment.
I see.
I can buy some used things. They cost less!
That's true.
And I like to bargain!
Me too!
Susie starts our conversation with a question.
She says, "What are you reading about?" What are you reading about?
Now if you see someone reading and want to know what they are reading, you can
ask this question.
What are you reading about?
But you can also use this question in another way. Right, Gabe?
That's right.
If you see someone just sitting there and it looks like they are thinking about
something, you could ask: What are you thinking about?
If someone is smiling and you want to know why they are smiling, you can ask:
What are you smiling about?
Well, I'm smiling about this key word right here.
It's looking right at me.
It's the key word "sale." That's what I'm smiling about, Andrea.
I'm glad you're smiling about our key word.
Well, in our conversation, Lily says: I'm looking for yard sales in the
newspaper.
Now a sale is a place that you can go to to buy things at a cheaper price.
I always like going to sales.
And here in our conversation, we are talking about a yard sale.
Now this is a special sale where people sell things that they don't want
anymore, and maybe other people want to buy them.
That's right. And they sell them in their front yard or very close to their
house.
Now there's another kind of sale that I'm thinking about.
It's called a flea market.
That's when many people bring their things to sell at a certain place.
That's another kind of sale.
But a yard sale is in your front yard.
And many people go to yard sales every weekend.
They check the newspaper to find out where the yard sales will be.
So you can buy used things at yard sales and they cost less.
Our key word here is "cost." Now when we talk about what something costs, that
means how much money you have to pay to buy it.
How much does it cost?
Or the word can be a noun.
What's the cost?
How much does it cost?
What's the cost?
Or it costs too much.
Oh, yeah.
I can't buy it.
But we can keep learning.
Let's go to Conversation B.
Do you often go to yard sales, Susie?
Sure. I go to yard sales almost every weekend in the summer.
Wow! You really like yard sales.
I do. I can buy things for cheap prices.
And I always meet interesting people.
How do you find yard sales?
I look in the newspaper or online.
Or I just drive around and look for signs.
So you can find yard sales by looking in the newspaper, looking online,
or just driving around and looking for signs that say, "yard sale." Right, Gabe?
Uh... Where's Gabe?
There's just a sign here.
But where's Gabe?
I'm here, Andrea. I'm back! I'm back! Hi.
Here we go.
I am making a sign for the Jungle Cafe.
The weekly special is meat.
Uh... OK, this is interesting.
Yes, this is the Jungle Cafe's weekly special sign.
But the sign says the weekly special is meat?
Well, yeah. You see, I love meat.
So the weekly special is meat.
I made a beautiful sign.
You did make a beautiful sign, Gabe.
But it's strange to have meat as a special.
Maybe you should have the special is fried chicken, or beef noodle soup, or fish
and chips.
No, no, no... Or just meat because meat is wonderful.
Well, do you think my sign is wonderful, friends?
I do.
And that is a wonderful key word.
The word is "sign." A sign is something that you see.
It has something written on it.
Or maybe there's a picture, and it gives you information about something, like
this week's Weekly Special.
OK. Yes, Gabe has an interesting sign.
Now where else do you see signs?
Well, if your are driving, you see signs on the road that give information.
A sign might tell you about the next city.
Or a sign can tell you how fast you can drive your car.
And a sign might tell you how much something costs.
It tells you the price.
That's our key word.
The price is how much something costs.
And I forgot to put the price on this sign.
I think it will be my favorite price, which is no price at all.
Free meat at the Jungle Cafe!
Wow! Free meat?
Yeah!
I guess that's a sign that many people want to see.
Well, right now it's time for us to continue with Conversation C.
Here we go.
What about garage sales?
Are those the same as yard sales?
Sure. A sale can be in a garage or in front of a home.
I see. So are you going to any yard sales this weekend?
Yes, I'll go on Saturday morning.
Can I go with you?
Sure. Let's meet in front of our apartment building at 7:30.
OK! Thanks!
What about a garage sale?
Hey, Gabe, is a yard sale the same as a garage sale?
Uh, uh, yes. Yes, it is.
A garage sale is another name for a yard sale.
Yes. So at a yard sale or at a garage sale, you can buy used things, and the
prices are usually cheaper.
They don't cost a lot.
Now a yard sale can be on someone's yard, usually their front yard.
"Front" is a key word.
Let's talk about it.
If something is at the front of someone's house, that means it's one of the
first things you see when you come to their house.
You can have a front yard and a backyard.
It can be in front of your house or in back of your house.
So you use the word "front" with those words - "in front of" or "at the front
of." Later, Susie says,
"Let's meet in front of our apartment building at 7:30." So you can meet in
front of a building.
Yes. So they're going to meet in front of the apartment building at 7:30.
And they are going to go to yard sales, or they might even find a garage sale.
Gabe, have you ever shopped at a yard sale or at a garage sale?
Yes, I have, Andrea.
And I have found many cheap things at yard sales.
Very good.
I agree. They can be a lot of fun.
And we can look at something new right now.
We can listen and learn from Ginger and the Monkey Man.
Well, today we're talking about yard sales.
Ooh, I want to go to a yard sale.
Really! What do you want to buy?
A yard. I want a yard with trees.
I love to swing in trees.
No, Ginger, you can't buy a yard at a yard sale.
Then why is it called a yard sale?
Well, it's a sale, and it's in someone's yard.
Oh. So what can you buy at a yard sale?
You can buy lots of used things, and they cost less.
Can you buy bananas at a yard sale?
No, you can't.
Then let's talk about something else.
OK.
Banana sales.
Please review today's key words with us.
It's a great way to practice.
The first one is: sale.
sale.
There is a sale on shirts at this store. They are very cheap.
cost.
cost.
This dress only costs $10. It's on sale!
price.
price.
What is the price of that camera? Can we buy it?
sign.
sign.
The sign says, "Do not enter!" So we can't go inside.
front.
front.
The door is at the front of the building.
And we are going to take a break now.
But we'll be back in a while.
