Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone. Welcome to our show.
I'm Andrea.
And I'm Gabe.
Now today we are talking about biking.
Our lesson is called: Let's Go Biking.
Let's Go Biking.
Do you like to go biking?
Do you like to take your bicycle out and ride around on it?
How far can you go?
Remember to bring your helmet.
That will protect your head in case of an accident.
But what if you get a flat tire?
Oh, that's not good when you go biking.
And what do these words mean - biking, far, flat, helmet, accident?
These are today's key words.
You will learn all about them in our lesson.
Let's get started.
Open up your magazine and go to conversation A.
What are you doing on Saturday, Amber?
I don't have any plans, Susie. Why?
Do you want to go biking?
Maybe. Where are you going?
We're going to bike around Pine Lake.
It's a great place to bike.
Who's going?
Rob, Ken, Lily and a few other friends.
How far is it around Pine Lake?
It's about 25 miles.
25 miles!
25 miles? 25 miles?
That's a long way!
But maybe when you're biking, it's not too bad.
Well, Susie is going to go with some people biking around Pine Lake.
And "biking" is one of our key words.
Say that with me.
biking.
Nice job.
When you go biking, that means you take your bicycle, and you ride it somewhere.
biking.
Do you want to go biking?
Biking is fun. I like going biking.
So biking is the activity.
But you need to have a bike to go biking.
That's right. Do you have a bike?
You can say, "I'm going biking," or "I'm going to ride my bike." I'm going
biking.
Susie is going biking with some friends.
They will bike around Pine Lake for about 25 miles.
That's how far they will go.
"Far" is a key word here.
Sometimes we use it as an adjective.
Here it's an adverb.
How far is it around Pine Lake?
That means: What is the distance?
So we can use this phrase in other ways.
How far is...?
How far is your school from your home?
How far is the city from my city?
How far do you have to walk to work every day?
And Amber asks, "How far is it around Pine Lake?" 25 miles.
Andrea, does that sound like a lot or a little?
Well, 25 miles is far. That is a lot.
It can take a long time to bike for 25 miles.
It's true. But it could take a lot longer to walk or to run 25 miles.
I have gone biking before.
And I think the most I ever did was 24 miles.
And that felt like a long time.
But if you go biking all the time, then maybe 25 miles is easy.
Well, it's definitely a great way to exercise to go biking for 25 miles.
Gabe, I'm sure that you can do it.
Well, I want to join everybody going biking around Pine Lake.
That sounds like fun.
And Conversation B will also be fun.
It will be.
Let's go there now.
You can bike 25 miles. That's easy.
Is the path flat?
Yes. There is only one big hill.
I don't like to pedal up hills.
You'll be fine.
We won't go fast. And we'll stop and rest.
That's good!
And the weather will be really nice on Saturday.
So when we bike, we'll get really hot!
Susie starts our conversation by saying "You can bike 25 miles. That's easy."
Well, Amber isn't sure.
So she has a question:
Is the path flat?
Now the path is what you are biking on.
Is the path flat?
Well, let's talk about this key word.
flat.
Now if a path is flat, that means it doesn't go up and down a lot.
It is flat.
And a flat path is easier to bike on.
What else is flat?
Well, if you're playing soccer or Frisbee or football, you need flat ground to
play.
It's not fun playing those sports on bumpy ground.
If you're going camping and you need to set up a tent, try to find a flat piece
of ground, not ground with rocks on it.
You want flat ground.
Well, Susie says yes, the path is straight.
But there is only one big hill.
Well, I guess that's good because Amber doesn't like to pedal up hills.
Now when you pedal your bike, you are moving your feet to move the pedals.
So when you bike, you pedal.
"Pedal" is the action.
Uh Gabe, what are you doing?
I am pedaling my bike.
Oh, you are pedaling your bike, of course.
Yes, of course. I mean, my imaginary bike.
It's a very nice, expensive bike.
And it's hard to pedal up hill, Andrea.
Well, that's true.
But it is fun to pedal downhills.
And it's fun to keep learning.
Let's go to Conversation C.
We won't get too hot.
We'll stop and swim in the lake!
Fun! Will everyone wear a helmet?
Of course. Helmets keep you safe.
Helmets are also hot.
Maybe. But they protect your head in an accident.
True. OK, I'd like to go with you.
That's great!
There's just one problem.
What's that?
I don't own a bike!
I am riding my motorcycle.
And I am riding my bicycle.
I'm riding my bike.
Riding my motorcycle.
Riding my bike.
Riding my motorcycle.
Riding my...
Oh, no!
Oh, no!
Gabe? Gabe?
We just had an accident.
Andrea, I was in an accident because someone wasn't careful when they were
riding their motorcycle.
No, no, no.
I was in an accident because someone wasn't careful as they were riding their
bicycle.
Well... Well... I guess we should just both be more careful when we are riding
our bicycles or our motorcycles.
Exactly. And we can be very thankful that we are both wearing helmets.
That's right. We both have helmets on.
"Helmet" is a key word.
You should wear a helmet if you are riding your motorcycle or riding your
bicycle.
I am wearing a bike helmet.
And Andrea has a motorcycle helmet on.
That's true.
You should wear this kind of helmet when you are riding a motorcycle or a
scooter.
And sometimes when you play other sports, you might also wear a helmet.
A helmet makes sure that your head stays safe.
It protects your head.
That's right. It makes sure your head stays on.
Well friends, we have another key word here.
It is the word "accident." Say it with me.
accident.
An accident is something that happens that you did not plan, you did not expect,
and it's bad.
I hope you don't get into any accidents when you are on the road.
Exactly. We can talk about car accidents or motorcycle accidents.
But sometimes you might just hit someone by accident.
Then you can say: I'm sorry. It was an accident.
It was an accident.
Well friends, it's no accident that we're going to continue learning with the
Monkey Man and our friend Ginger.
Here we go.
Ginger, I'm going on a bike ride with my friends.
Ooh, I want to go! I want to go!
I'm sorry, Ginger. This ride is too far for you.
I can do it! I want to go.
We're going to bike for 25 miles.
I can do it. I want to go.
And we're going to go up a big hill.
Ooh, I can do it. I want to go.
It will be very hot.
I can do it. I want to go.
All right. You can go.
Hooray!
All right, where is your bicycle?
I don't need a bike.
I'll ride on the back of your bicycle.
Well, let's review our key words now.
The first one is: biking.
biking.
I have a new bike. Let's go biking.
far.
far.
How far is the movie theater from here?
flat.
flat.
Walking is easy here. The ground is flat.
helmet.
helmet.
When you ride your motorcycle, wear a helmet!
accident.
accident.
James hurt his leg in an accident.
Ouch! That sounds painful.
I'm sorry, James.
I hope you get better.
Well friends, right now it's time for us to take abreak.
