Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone, and welcome to a new week... well, actually, a new month of
learning together.
My name is Andrea.
And I am Gabe.
We're glad to be your teachers here on Let's Talk in English.
And today's lesson is called: Make a Sandwich.
Do you have your magazine?
Open it up to today's lesson.
We're going to learn how to talk about making sandwiches in English.
Now sandwiches can be very delicious.
Are you getting hungry?
Well, maybe you can make a sandwich too soon.
But first, we do have a good lesson today.
And we have some key words we want to teach you.
So pay attention.
Right now let's go to Conversation A.
Hey, Ken, what did you bring for lunch today?
A sandwich!
I like sandwiches.
What did you bring for lunch, Rob?
I didn't bring anything.
I can go to the Jungle Cafe for lunch.
Or you can have half of my sandwich.
It's really big.
Why is your sandwich so big?
I made it big!
Well, someone brought a sandwich for lunch today.
Andrea, who brought a sandwich for lunch?
Ken brought a sandwich for lunch today.
And tell me about this sandwich.
Was it a big sandwich or a small sandwich?
It was a big sandwich.
So I guess Ken is pretty hungry.
He might be pretty hungry.
He made a big sandwich.
"Sandwich" is our first key word today.
A sandwich is something that you can make and eat for a meal.
You take two pieces of bread.
And you put things in between, like meat and cheese and lettuce and mayonnaise
or other things.
You can make a sandwich.
And there are many different kinds of sandwiches.
Hey, Gabe, what kind of sandwich do you like?
Andrea, I worked at a sandwich shop when I was at university.
And I made all kinds of sandwiches.
But I really liked the ham and cheese sandwiches.
There are many different kinds of cheeses that I could make with these
sandwiches.
I like ham and cheese sandwiches.
What about you, Andrea?
I like peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
Now I don't have these a lot.
But when I have one, it tastes so good.
Those are delicious.
Have you ever tried a peanut butter and banana sandwich?
Try that today.
You cut up some bananas.
And then you put some peanut butter on the bread.
Put it all together, and you can have a delicious sandwich.
Well, right now it's time for us to continue with Conversation B.
Did you use bread or a bun for your sandwich?
I used two big pieces of bread.
What's in your sandwich?
First, I put mayo and mustard on the two pieces of bread.
I see.
Then I put beef, ham and pepperoni on it.
You like meat.
Yes, I do.
Did you use bread or a bun for your sandwich?
Now you can make sandwiches using different things.
You can use a bun, or you can use bread.
You can also use different kinds of bread.
And "bread" is a key word.
Let's talk about it.
Bread is something that you can use.
You can cut bread to make a sandwich.
And Gabe, you have a loaf of bread.
A loaf of bread is what we call the... the piece of bread when it's still big.
L-O-A-F.
And that looks like a... a nice loaf of bread.
This is. I think it will be quite delicious.
This bread is made with nuts and little pieces of fruit.
And I think it's pretty healthy too.
It's good for you.
This bread will be delicious.
It's a loaf of bread.
So that loaf of bread has little pieces of fruit.
Are you going to cut the bread into pieces to make a sandwich?
I should cut the bread into pieces.
Then I can make a sandwich.
And Andrea, I will take a little piece of bread right here and give it to you.
Oh!
There you go.
Wow!
Yeah.
Gabe, thank you for this piece of bread.
Well, "piece" is also a key word.
If you have a piece of something, that means it's a small part of something
bigger.
When you cut bread into pieces, you can make a sandwich.
Or you can just take a small piece of bread from the loaf and enjoy eating it.
Andrea this is really delicious.
This piece of bread is really good.
I really like this bread.
Now you can use this word "piece" to talk about other things.
Maybe you can have a piece of pie.
It's not the whole pie.
It's a piece of pie.
Can I try a piece of that cake?
It looks good.
I don't want a lot.
I just want a piece.
Well, we want to learn more.
So let's look at Conversation C.
Did you put anything else on your sandwich?
Of course!
I also put some cheese, tomatoes, onions and lettuce on it.
Wow. That is a big sandwich.
So do you want half of it?
No thanks.
I don't like mustard on my sandwiches.
OK. Then I can eat all of my sandwich!
I'm really hungry!
Well, we found out that Ken likes beef and pepperoni and ham on his sandwich.
And we also found out that he put some cheese and tomatoes, onions and lettuce
on his big sandwich.
Well friends, we have two key words here.
The first one is "cheese." Do you like cheese?
Cheese is something that is made with milk, or it comes from the milk of cows or
goats.
And you can make cheese in different ways.
There are many different kinds of cheese.
What kind of cheese do you like?
I enjoy cheese that is very hard, like cheddar cheese.
It's a very deep orange cheese.
But of course, there are many different kinds of cheeses.
And you can put a slice or a piece of cheese on your sandwich.
But there is also cheese in many other dishes that you might eat.
Do you enjoy eating spaghetti?
Well, people often put some cheese on their spaghetti.
Do you like to eat chicken and cheese?
That's another good dish.
You can cook chicken or bake chicken, and put cheese on top of it.
Mmm, that is good.
Do you like cheeseburgers?
Or do you like cheesecake?
There are many different things that you can use cheese to make.
Now we do have another key word here.
It is: tomato.
Do you like tomatoes?
They are a small fruit.
Many people think they are vegetables.
But they do have seeds inside.
They are a delicious fruit.
There are different kinds of tomatoes.
There are big tomatoes that you can cut, and put slices of tomatoes on your
sandwiches.
But I also like little tomatoes.
They're called cherry tomatoes.
And you can just eat the whole thing at one time.
Mmm, tomatoes are delicious.
And Ken's sandwich sounds delicious.
It's a big sandwich.
But Rob doesn't want to share.
He doesn't want half of Ken's sandwich.
Well, that's OK because I think Ken can eat his whole sandwich.
He is really hungry.
Well, I'm getting hungry just thinking about his sandwich.
I think I'm going to ask Ken if I can have half of it.
But right now friends, it's time for us to continue.
Let's go and enjoy some time with Ginger.
Wow! Why was Ken's sandwich so big?
Well Ginger, it's because he made it big.
That's funny.
Hey, I'm going to make a sandwich too.
Oh. And what are you going to put on it?
Beef, ham and pepperoni.
Ooh, that sound good.
You know, Ginger, that's a lot of meat.
Are you going to put anything else on your sandwich?
I'll put cheese, tomatoes, onions and lettuce.
Hmm, that will be a big sandwich, just like Ken's.
No. My sandwich won't be big like Ken's.
It will be bigger!
Bigger?
Yeah, I'm going to put bananas on my sandwich too.
Oh, that will be bigger.
Yeah, bigger and better!
All right, friends, now it's time to review our key words.
The first one is: sandwich.
sandwich.
Mom can make a sandwich for you. What do you want on it?
bread.
bread.
Do you want some butter on your bread?
piece.
piece.
This pizza is great. Can I have another piece?
cheese.
cheese.
Please don't put cheese on my hamburger.
And tomato.
Say it again.
tomato.
I like tomatoes in my salad.
You know what else I like?
I like taking a break every once in a while.
Let's take a break right now.
