Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone. Welcome to the studio.
My name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
It is the last day of the month here.
And our lesson is called: What Do You Do in Your Free Time?
This is a good question.
Well, we know what you are doing right now.
You are listening to and enjoying Let's Talk in English.
Now what do you do in your free time, when you could relax or you don't need to
do anything?
When are you free?
What do you like to do?
Maybe you play games like... like chess.
Chess is a wonderful game.
Maybe you like to work on puzzles.
Maybe you would rather write in your diary or... or journal.
Or maybe you like to chat with your friends.
There are many different things to do in your free time.
Let's learn a lot of key words today.
Let's learn some other things as well as we go to our conversations.
Let's begin with Conversation A.
Hi, Amber. Are you checking e-mail?
Oh, hi, Rob. No, I'm playing chess.
Really? You play chess?
I'm learning. It's a fun game.
It is fun.
But I'd rather do other things.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to read, watch TV and exercise.
I like those things too.
Amber asks a good question in Conversation A.
She says, "What do you like to do in your free time?" What do you like to do in
your free time?
It's always nice to have free time, isn't it?
Well, let's talk about this key word.
free.
Now when you are free or when you have free time, that means you don't have to
do anything.
When you have free time, you can do whatever you want to do.
So you can ask someone, "Do you have free time?" or "Are you free?" It's a way
to find out if someone has plans, or if they can maybe do something.
Are you free tonight?
Are you free tomorrow?
Well, no, I'm kind of busy tonight.
But I'm free tomorrow.
Or you could say: I have a free evening tomorrow.
Maybe a time of day is free.
You're not busy.
You could say I have a free morning or a free evening.
Let's do something.
I'm free then.
It's always nice to think about what you want to do in your free time.
And when you ask someone this question, "What do you like to do in your free
time," you learn about their interests.
Now Gabe, I know you don't have a lot of free time.
No. I'm so busy, Andrea.
Yes, yes, yes.
But when you have free time, would you rather play games on the computer, or
play games with your friends?
Play games with my friends!
That was very easy to answer, Andrea.
I would rather play games with my friends that I can see than on a computer.
OK. Well, when you have free time, which, I know it's not very often.
Not often. I'm busy.
Uh, do you like to watch sports on TV, or play sports outside?
Well, I would rather play sports outside.
I do enjoy watching sports on TV.
But I'd rather play sports outside.
That's what I would rather do.
Ah, very good. I think that's a good answer.
Let's talk about this key word.
rather.
Now if you would rather do one thing over another thing, that means you would
like to do it more.
I would rather eat fruit than vegetables.
That means I like fruit more than vegetables.
Well, I would rather play chess than read a book.
"Chess" is another key word.
It's a fun game that two people can play.
One person has white pieces, the other person has black pieces.
And you try to kill the king of the other person.
Anyway, it's a fun game.
And Conversation B is also very fun.
Let's take a look at that right now.
What else do you do in your free time?
I like to chat online or go shopping with friends.
And I like to do Sudoku puzzles.
I like those too.
I also write a lot.
Do you write in a diary?
No, I write on my blog.
That's great.
I also ride my bike and play sports.
I enjoy the theater and concerts and...
How much free time do you have?
Let's see... what...
4?
OK, 4. And then here...
8.
8. Yes, of course. And...
3. 3.
Andrea, thank you for trying to help.
But I want to do this puzzle by myself.
OK, no problem. No problem.
OK.
7.
Um.
7.
Andrea, thank you very much for helping me with my Sudoku puzzle.
You're welcome.
Uh, but maybe you can do something else, like um, teach the key word "puzzle"?
Oh! Well, yes, I... I can do that.
Thank you.
Yes, a puzzle.
A puzzle is something that you can do.
There are many different kinds of puzzles.
But when you are doing a puzzle or putting a puzzle together,
you're trying to figure it out, and trying to put things where they are supposed
to go.
With a Sudoku puzzle, you try to put the numbers in the right place.
And Gabe was having a bit of trouble with that.
So I was helping him.
I was having a bit of trouble with my Sudoku puzzle.
Thank you for helping me, Andrea.
This is my Sudoku puzzle.
And I'm not doing a very good job.
Now there are other kinds of puzzles.
When I think of a puzzle, I think of putting different pieces together to make a
picture.
That's one kind of puzzle.
Yes, I enjoy those big picture puzzles.
I often put together puzzles with my family.
And we would work on a puzzle for weeks at a time until all the pieces were in
the right place.
And we would see the big, beautiful picture.
So you can put a puzzle together in your free time.
Or you can chat with a friend.
"Chat" is a key word.
Andrea and I are going to chat right now.
Andrea, what will you do later this evening?
Well, I will go for a walk.
And then I will cook dinner.
And then I will spend some time with my family.
Well, that's wonderful.
Andrea, do you keep a diary?
Do you ever write in a diary?
Well, I sometimes write in a diary, but not very often.
Not very often. I see.
Did you hear that, friends?
We were just chatting.
And I used another key word.
It is: diary.
Do you have a diary?
It's like a journal or a notebook.
Or maybe you have an online diary.
And you can write about your thoughts or about your day.
You can just write things in your diary that you are thinking about.
And a great way to practice English is to keep a diary in English.
Write down different thoughts or different things that you did each day in your
diary.
Now we did talk about the key word "chat." And when you chat, you are talking to
someone.
But you can also chat online.
When you chat online, you're not talking to someone, but you are typing a
conversation with that person.
So we can use this key word in different ways.
That's right.
Well friends, we're learning a lot today.
And we're going to see all of our key words again in our Read It paragraph.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Maybe you exercise or play sports.
If you're a social person, you might chat online or go shopping with friends.
Or would you rather spend time alone?
Maybe you listen to music or write in a diary.
Do you play video games or computer games?
How about games like chess, or puzzles like Sudoku?
There are so many ways to spend your free time!
There are so many ways to spend your free time.
How about games like chess or puzzles like Sudoku?
Wait. Where is my Sudoku?
I guess I'll find it sometime.
But there is a good phrase here.
There are so many ways to spend your time.
There are so many ways to spend your vacation.
There are so many ways to spend your evening tonight.
There are so many ways to spend your free time.
Well, I think we have time now to review our key words.
Andrea?
Oh, sure. We can do that.
Let me just finish your Sudoku puzzles.
Oh, yes, our first key word is: chess.
chess.
Chess is a fun game, but it's not easy.
rather.
Would you rather go to the theater or watch a movie here?
free.
Are you free tonight? Or are you busy?
chat.
Helen is chatting online with her friend in America.
puzzle.
This puzzle is hard. Can you help me?
diary.
Samantha writes many personal things in her diary.
And Christina shares many important things.
Let's go and spend some time with her now.
