Lights.

Let's Talk in English.
Welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
We are glad you joined us.
We have a new week of lessons just for you.
The title of our lesson today is: Rob's Party.
Rob's Party.
So Rob must be having a party.
Well, I am interested to know more.
Do you have interest in this subject?
Well, I'm sure several of you have interest.
You want to meet some people who know Rob at his party.
Well, I just used our key words from today's lesson.
Now you will see them in your magazine.
You will hear them in our conversations.
And then we will review them in our Read It.
So let's begin with Conversation A.
Hi, Ken.
Hi, Lily. Are you going to Rob's party on Friday?
No, I can't. I'm busy.
Rob invited a lot of people.
But I don't know many of them.
Then you can meet new people.
What can I talk to them about?
I'm not very good at small talk.
You can talk to them about several things.
Ask about their family, work or school.
So how's your family doing?
Oh, they're doing pretty well.
Yeah, my dad's doing all right.
And... and my mom is really enjoying just what she's doing. Yeah.
Oh, that's great!
So it's good.
How's your family doing?
It's good to hear.
Actually, great.
My son is growing up very quickly.
Well, you have to see him again.
He's going to stop by and see you.
Of course I want to see him, yeah.
Yeah.
And how's the weather?
Well, the weather's pretty good.
I mean, it's always nice when the sun is shining.
But yeah, the weather is pretty good.
Do you think it's going to be a nice weekend?
I think it'll be a great weekend.
Good for eating things.
Do you like to eat?
I do like to eat.
I enjoy trying new restaurants and... and cooking new dishes as well.
Hey, Gabe, this is fun. We're having some good small talk, aren't we?
Yeah, I would say it's small talk.
It's fun to have small talk when you meet someone new.
Yeah, so when you meet someone new, sometimes you're not sure what to talk
about.
So you can make small talk or have small talk.
Small talk is talking about things that most people know about and most people
like to share about.
Like our conversation says, ask about their family, work or school.
So yes, when you meet someone new, you can have small talk.
Or when you're talking to a friend, you can also have some small talk.
And for those of you who are interested in practicing English, small talk in
English is a great way to practice.
That is true. Practice with small talk about things people are comfortable
talking about: school, work, the weather, food...
These are different kinds of things you can talk about when you have small talk.
I'm very good at meeting people.
I'm good at having small talk.
But I'm not very good at staying in touch with people.
Ah, I understand.
I know that you're good at meeting people.
And when you meet someone, you get to know that person for the first time.
"Meet" is a key word here.
Now what's something that you often share when you meet a new person?
Well, I might ask: Where are you from?
Of course: What's your name? And then: Where are you from?
Right. And of course, the first time you meet someone, it's always good to share
your name.
Hi, I'm Andrea.
What's your name?
And try to remember that person's name.
Of course, there are several things that you can talk about.
And we want to quickly talk about this key word.
several.
"Several" is another word for "many." Now we've already learned several things
and talked about several things in Conversation A.
But we have several more things to learn and talk about in Conversation B.
That's good. What else?
Ask about their interests.
I can ask, "What do you like to do?".
Sure. Or, "What are you interested in?".
That's good.
Someone might like the same subjects as you.
Then I can talk to that person for a long time.
Have fun on Friday!
Thanks!
Well, we're learning about how to create small talk or how to have small talk
with someone.
Something you can do is ask about someone's interests.
"Interest" is a key word.
Your interest is what you like - something you like learning about, or something
you like doing.
You find it interesting.
It is your interest.
Lily says, "Ask about their interests." So you can ask someone: What are your
interests?
If you have hobbies, then your hobbies are usually your interests.
And people always enjoy talking about their interests.
And actually, if you are asking someone a question about their life, you are
showing interest in that person.
To show interest in somebody, or to show interest in something means that you
think it is interesting.
You want to know more.
We see another key word here that has that word in it - interested.
If you are interested in something, that means you want to know more about it.
What do you like to do?
Or, what are you interested in?
These are great questions to make small talk.
What are you interested in?
I'm interested in learning about new countries.
Or I'm interested in learning how to cook different kinds of foods.
So you can ask, "What are you interested in?" Or you can change the question a
little bit.
You can ask, "Who are you interested in?" This makes it a little different.
If you are interested in somebody, that means you like them - more than just a
friend.
Who are you interested in?
Of course, this is not small talk.
Someone might not feel comfortable sharing this information if they just met
you.
Exactly.
This... That's the kind of question that you would ask someone you know very
well.
A friend.
Yes. So Gabe, who are you interested in?
Um, I am interested in talking about this next key word.
Um, the key word is uh, "subject." Say it again.
subject.
A subject is a topic of conversation.
The subjects I like are music and drama.
I like a couple more subjects, but I really like those subjects.
Well, those are good subjects.
And of course, we also talked about other subjects like your family, your work,
and things you are interested in.
But it sounds like Gabe doesn't want to talk about the subject of what he is
interested in or who he is interested in.
Uh... Well, that's for another time.
It's time now to go to our Read It.
You go to a party.
You meet some new people there.
What can you talk about?
You can talk about several subjects.
1. School or work.
Ask, "Where do you go to school?" or "What do you do?".
2. Family.
Say, "Tell me about your family.".
3. Interests.
Ask, "What do you like to do?" or "What are you interested in?".
Where do you go to school?
What do you do?
Tell me about your family.
What do you like to do?
Or, what are you interested in?
These are all questions from our Read It.
And they are all questions that we would like you to use next time you meet
someone new and have small talk in English.
For now, let's review our key words together.
Let's meet the first one.
It is: meet.
Hank is new here. He is meeting many people.
several.
Mary comes from a big family. She has several brothers and sisters.
interest.
Sally has an interest in clothes. She loves shopping!
interested.
I'm not interested in the news. Please don't talk about it.
subject.
Frank's favorite subject is sports. He can talk about sports all day.
Well, we could keep talking about our key words all day.
But I think it's time now for us to continue learning with Christina.
(Chinese).
