Let's Talk...
In English.
Hi, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
And we're glad you could join us as today we talk about vets.
We learned about nurses.
We learned about doctors.
And today we're talking about another kind of person that likes to help people.
Well actually, a vet likes to help animals.
Where might you see a vet?
Well, at an office where the vet works.
Now lots of animals go to vets.
And vets know what do.
They know how to help an animal recover if it is sick.
They might know how to cure an animal.
And a vet can do other things as well.
Well, we have lots of things to learn today.
So open up your magazine and let's begin with Conversation A.
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk.
Today we're talking about animal doctors.
And our special guest is Vance the Vet.
Let's welcome him.
Tell us about your job, Vance!
Do you work at a zoo?
No. I'm a vet at a small-animal hospital.
So your hospital is small?
No. My hospital treats small animals!
I see.
So you help animals like cats, dogs and birds?
Right. I help people's sick pets recover.
That makes people happy, doesn't it?
Yes, it does!
Today we meet Vance the Vet on Let's Talk!
Now, Rob asks him a question.
He says, "Do you work at a zoo?" Well, Vance the Vet does not work at a zoo.
He works at a small-animal hospital.
But we do want to talk about that word "zoo." It's a key word.
A zoo is a place that you can go to to see many different kinds of animals.
You can walk around the zoo, look at the animals, and learn more about them.
And my favorite kind of zoos are the kind where you can walk in and pet some
animals.
You can get really close to some animals at some zoos.
Well, that kind of zoo is called a petting zoo.
So at a petting zoo, you can pet the animals, and there are usually small
animals there.
Then you can visit another zoo and see big animals like elephants and giraffes.
Well, Vance the Vet knows a lot about animals.
Let's look at this key word.
vet.
A vet is a doctor for animals.
"Vet" is a short word.
But the long way to say it is: veterinarian.
Ooh, that's a long word.
veterinarian.
You can just say "vet." If you have a pet,
like a dog or cat or rabbit or something like that, you can take your pet animal
to the vet if he is sick.
And "pet" is also a key word today.
And as Gabe said, a pet is an animal like a dog or a cat or a fish.
But it's an animal that is part of your family, an animal that lives in your
house.
So if your pet is sick, a vet can help the animal recover.
"Recover" is also a key word.
When you recover, that means you were sick, but then you are well again.
You recover from your sickness.
And if you know someone who is sick, you can help them recover by going to visit
them.
That will make them feel better.
You can say: Get well soon; or: I hope you recover soon.
And we have more to learn now with Conversation B.
How do you help animals?
Sometimes I give them medicine.
I often use needles so they can get the medicine faster.
I see.
Sometimes I take X-rays.
And I check animals' blood.
Those things help you know what's wrong with the animal.
Right. And I can cure the animal faster.
Being a vet sounds like a great job.
It is!
Well, we're finding out a lot about Vance the Vet.
And we found out that he is very...
He is a very helpful person.
I liked Vance.
Yeah. You know, Gabe, I'm... I'm also a very helpful person.
Well, yes.
And today we learned that Vance the Vet sometimes gives medicine to the animals
using a needle.
And I think that you need some medicine right now because you sneezed.
What?
So I can help you.
I have a needle right here.
No, no, no!
Yes.
Andrea.
I do.
No, no, no!
And I can use this needle right here to put some medicine in your body.
No, no, no! Andrea, you don't understand.
I really do not like needles.
I'm very scared of needles.
And I only sneezed once.
Well Gabe, I don't mean to frighten you.
Don't be frightened.
I want to help you.
There's medicine in here that can help you.
I know how you can help.
You can just talk about this key word - needle.
Oh. Well yes, I can do that.
A needle is something that a doctor or a nurse uses to put medicine in your
body.
Now sometimes the medicine helps you get better.
Sometimes it is used so you don't get sick.
Now you use something that looks like this.
And at the top, you see the needle.
This is where the medicine comes out and goes into your body.
And I really don't like needles.
Now there are different kinds of needles.
You use another kind of needle to sew things together, like when you're making
clothes, you use a kind of needle.
But I don't like the kind of needle that Andrea is holding right now.
But I do understand that some medicine can help to cure people.
And "cure" is another key word.
When you cure someone, that means you make them get better, you help them
recover.
That's right.
And Vance the Vet helps cure the animals by giving them a needle.
And I'll... I'll do the same right now for... for Gabe.
Uh, no, no, no... you won't. No, you won't, Andrea.
Right now I think it's time for us to continue learning something with our Read
It paragraph.
Thank you. Thank you.
A vet is a doctor for animals.
Vets cure animals' diseases.
They use medicine, needles, X-rays and operations to help sick animals recover.
Some vets work at small-animal hospitals.
These vets usually treat people's pets, like cats, dogs and birds.
Other vets treat large animals, like horses and cows.
These vets sometimes travel to farms to help sick animals.
Other vets work at zoos and treat animals like elephants and tigers.
Now there are many different kinds of animals.
Maybe you have a pet cat or a pet dog.
Another example of a pet is a fish.
Do you have a pet fish?
So that's a pet.
Now what about a farm animal?
A farm animal is something like a pig or a cow or a goat.
And of course, there are animals that you should not keep as pets, or you would
not see them on a farm.
That's right. A giraffe or an elephant or a lion or a tiger is an example of a
zoo animal.
Well friends, right now it's time for us to review our key words.
The first one is: zoo.
Teresa saw lots of animals at the zoo.
vet.
veterinarian.
Dr. Gardner is a vet. He cares for cats and dogs.
pet.
Lulu is a cat. She is my pet.
recover.
Rhonda was sick last week but now she is recovering.
needle.
Nurses use needles to take blood from patients.
And cure.
The doctor cured the patient. Now the patient is fine.
Well friends, you're doing a great job today.
And I think it's time for us all to continue learning something with Christina.
(Chinese).
