Let's Talk...
In English.
Hi, everybody. My name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
I'm glad you could join us here in the studio today as we talk about nurses.
That is the title of today's lesson.
And we're going to learn all about nurses today.
Now, when might you see a nurse?
Andrea, when might you see a nurse?
Well, you might see a nurse if you are sick.
If you go to a hospital or to a doctor's clinic, a nurse can help you there.
They can care for you there.
That is right.
So if you ever do feel sick - and I hope you are not sick - but if you are, you
might go to the hospital and see a nurse there.
Well, we just used all of our key words.
And you are going to learn them in today's lesson.
So let's get started.
Open up your magazine and let's begin.
Hi, Susie. Where are you going?
I'm going to the hospital.
Oh! Are you sick?
No. I need to interview a nurse for tomorrow's show.
I see.
Yes. I want more information about nurses.
I don't know much about them.
They help sick people.
Everyone knows that!
I want to know more about their job.
Susie is going to the hospital.
Now is Susie sick?
Well, that's the same question Ken had.
He asked, "Are you sick?" No, Susie is not sick.
But why is she going to the hospital?
Gabe, do you know why?
She is going to interview someone at the hospital.
She wants to interview a nurse, Andrea.
You got it! She wants to interview a nurse.
Now when you interview someone, you ask them questions to find more about them,
or to find out more about their job.
Well, let's find out more about this key word.
nurse.
Now a nurse is someone who works at a hospital.
Nurses take care of the sick people at a hospital or at a clinic.
And being a nurse is a very important job.
It is an important job.
I have some friends who are nurses.
And if I'm ever feeling sick or if something is wrong with me, I know I can ask
my nurse friends some questions.
They might be able to help me because they know a lot.
They do know a lot.
Nurses have to study hard before they can be a nurse.
And they want to help sick people.
Now we've talked about this word a lot already.
It is a key word today.
sick.
Now when you are sick, that means you are not well.
You have a problem when you are sick.
Well, are you sick?
I hope not.
But if you are sick, I hope Let's Talk in English helps to make you feel a
little better.
You know, there are different kinds of sicknesses.
Maybe you have a cold.
That means you're a little sick.
Maybe you have the flu.
That's sick in a different way.
Maybe you're on a car trip, and you don't like being in cars.
You can say I'm carsick.
Or maybe you're on the ocean, and the ocean is making you sick.
That's called seasick.
Wow, that's true.
Good things to remember: carsick or seasick.
And if you are feeling sick, you can go to a hospital.
And a doctor or a nurse can help you there.
Our key word is hospital.
A hospital is a place where you go when you are sick.
People at the hospital will help you get better.
And sometimes you might have to stay at the hospital until you're well.
And sometimes you just go to a hospital to see a doctor, and then go home again.
And where is the hospital?
Where is the closest hospital to your house or to your school?
It's good to know where the hospitals are in your city.
Right now it's time for us to continue with Conversation B.
Nurses care for sick people.
Yes. And they help doctors.
Nurses ask sick people questions.
Right. They learn about people's problems.
Nurses check people's temperature too.
Then they tell doctors the information.
Right. And nurses don't only work in hospitals.
They work in clinics, schools and homes too!
Maybe you don't need to go to the hospital, Susie.
You already know a lot about nurses!
Well, what do nurses and doctors do?
They care for people.
"Care" is a key word.
And we want you to take care to learn this word.
When you care for something or when you care about something, that means you
think about it.
You want something or someone to get better.
You care for that person.
Who cares for you?
Well, if you're a child, then your mom and your dad care for you.
Do you have a pet?
Well, then you care for your pet.
You make sure your pet has what it needs.
You can also ask this question:
What do you care about?
It's a way to find out what is most important to someone in their life.
What do you care about?
Hmm, Andrea, what do you care about?
I care about my family.
I care about my husband.
And I care about my baby.
I care about my friends.
And I care about my job as well.
Well, those are great things to care about.
And what do you care about, friends?
Let's see.
I also care about my friends.
I care about my family.
And I care about making the world a better place.
I think it's important to try to see what you're good at so that you can make
the world or where you are a better place.
It's important to care about these things.
Wow, Gabe, that is great.
It's good for us to remember that.
We should care about our world, care about our neighbors and the people around
us.
When you care about people, you make a difference.
And doctors do make a difference.
"Doctor" is a key word.
A doctor is someone who does work at a hospital.
If you go to a hospital, and you're sick or something else is wrong with you,
the doctor knows a lot.
And he can help you, or she can help you.
Yes. So you can go see a doctor at a hospital or at a clinic.
And if you are really sick, a doctor might even come to your home.
Well, we also find out that nurses work at hospitals, but they also work at
clinics.
And some people need a nurse to live with them at home if they are sick and
often need help.
That's right.
Now a doctor might work at a hospital.
Or you could also say I'm going to the doctor's office.
You might visit the doctor in their office, and they can help you there.
Well, we've talked about a lot so far today.
Let's continue with our Read It.
We'll see all of our key words there too.
You're sick. You go to a clinic or a hospital.
Who do you often talk to first? A nurse!
A nurse checks your temperature.
She asks you some questions too.
Nurses are important.
They help doctors.
They care for sick people.
Nurses work other places besides clinics and hospitals.
They work in schools and homes too.
Well, I hope that you are feeling fine right now.
If you are in a hospital enjoying Let's Talk in English, I hope you get better.
Now in this Read It, we saw a big word that starts with T.
temperature.
A nurse checks your temperature.
The temperature is how hot or how cold something is.
So you can talk about the weather - the temperature outside.
Or you can talk about the temperature of your body.
And if it gets more than 37 or 38 degrees, the temperature is too high, and
maybe you need to go to the hospital.
Well friends, we do have some key words to review.
Andrea, can you help us out?
I can. The first one is: hospital.
My grandmother is in the hospital. She is very sick.
sick.
Brandon is sick. He has a fever.
nurse.
April is a nurse. She works at a clinic.
care.
Nurses and doctors care for people in the hospital.
doctor.
The doctor helps the sick man.
Well done.
Now Christina is going to help you learn more.
(Chinese).
